Hi all

I am sorry if this makes no sense, I am so anxious.
At my 31 week appointment I measured big so was sent for a scan. Baby’s tummy was big and there was extra water, so was sent for a GD test.
I was sent for more scans for a separate reason, by 34 weeks babies tummy had returned to 50 centile and waters were well within normal range.
Still they wanted me to do the GD test. I was certain it would be negative.

Anyway, I did it Tuesday. A midwife called me about something else (a different test I had to redo cause it was done wrong) she mentioned that my GD test came back positive.
She said, “has no one told you?” I said no I only did it on Tuesday.

She said my pre sugar drink test was 2.5
And after 2 hours from the sugar drink it was 8.3or4 (can’t remember)
She said something about a consultant and then said she’d talk to me tomorrow

I’m so worried. I’m due a section in 4 weeks anyways. Have i hurt the baby? I read it can cause developmental issues

Has anyone had a reading this high? I don’t know if this is high. I’m so so worried

Please don’t panic. I had GD and yes my sugar was high when diagnosed, earlier in the pregnancy than you and I was under the diabetic consultant but I managed it with diet. Be aware they often don’t let you go beyond 39 weeks with GD and when I had DD 7 years ago tested her blood sugar regularly over the first 24 hours and then it was fine to go home. I’m sure they will be in touch. Good luck.

Hi, I was diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks. My test 2 hours after the sugar drink was 8.2. I don’t think 8.4 is particularly high, because the cut off is usually 7.8, but as I was told ‘a high reading is a high reading regardless’. I was really upset and was also so so worried I had hurt the baby, but it’s really nothing you’ve done it’s to do with the placenta and hormones. I’ve had to change my diet but nothing major there really, and a few days ago I started taking insulin to improve my morning sugars. I was really reluctant to take insulin but it’s helped and actually relaxed me a bit as I’m less worried about my sugars. I think if you are on insulin they don’t like to let your pregnancy go on past 39 weeks. If you have a normal midwife at the moment they will probably move you into the care of a consultant. Have they told you about testing yourself?
With regards to your baby’s size, from speaking to lots of women who have/have had GD, it seems that they often tell you your baby is very big, but when the baby comes it’s often much smaller than predicted. I haven’t heard any stories of huge babies although I’m sure it can happen! As for developmental issues, I don’t think this is likely at all, but I also read that on google. Since being diagnosed at 28 weeks (7 weeks ago I’m also 35 weeks now) I’ve actually met/heard of so many women who’ve had GD, and all babies are fine! If you have any questions I can help with I’d be happy to answer.

Don’t panic, you won’t have harmed your baby.
I was diagnosed at 28 weeks and on metformin and insulin by 30 weeks as I couldn’t keep my morning fasting readings under control.
Don’t worry if you can’t control it with diet alone, I did everything I was told to do with regards to what to eat etc, but still my fasting readings would be high, then as the weeks went on, even meals I’d been able to previously tolerate well, would give me high readings so I ended up on insulin before meals too.

I was consultant led anyway due to previous c sections and shed planned on doing my section at 39 weeks, but after a meeting at 34 weeks with my diabetic consultant and my regular consultant, they decided that due to the amount of insulin I was on they would rather bring my section forward to as close to 37 weeks as they could.

I was given my c section at 37+4. Baby was absolutely fine. He was a decent size for his gestation and weighed 7lb 5oz, but not massive. He had his blood sugars checked twice after birth and both times his levels were fab. We left the hospital just over 24 hours later.

I’m now 6 weeks post baby and off to have a blood test today to see if the diabetes has definitely gone 🤞🏻

@Moominmiss how much insulin were you taking? My numbers are also creeping up and I’m expecting them to up my doses

Moominmiss · 15/10/2021 10:04

@mistypop I was on 2 units of lispro insulin before each meal, and 22 units of humulin insulin before bed for my fasting levels.

I actually didn’t think mine was that high as I’d heard about women being on nearly 100 units of insulin, but yeah my consultant wasn’t happy to let me go to 39 weeks.

On the morning of my c section on hospital the surgeon has me test my sugar levels 3 times to be certain they were ok before starting. I had to have steroid injections ahead of my section (standard in my trust to give steroids for any planned birth before 39 weeks), and steroids are known to affect your levels.
My consultant had said I was lucky not to have been admitted at the time of the first steroid injection and put on a sliding scale for insulin. Apparently that’s pretty standard when given steroids and on insulin. But somehow I avoided that!
