36+3 Growth scan est birth weight

Hi

Terrified FTM here, just had a growth scan due to cyst.

Baby is est 7lbs currently. With a potential 4/5 weeks left I've heard they gain about half a pound each week. So 9lb-9.5lb.

Slightly terrified. Anyone experienced this and actually gave birth to a baby smaller than the est birth weight?

Don’t worry, scans are really not accurate at predicting birth weight.
I had a lot of extra scans due to having a small bump. Scans said baby was really big, he came out 8lb exactly - so slightly bigger than average but not really big.

Don't want to scare you but I read all about scans not being accurate and had hope my baby wouldn't be as big as predicted.

I was scanned at 35 weeks and estimated a 7lb13oz baby and possibly looking at a 10lb/11lb full term.

2weeks later told he wasn't growing as well as expected predicted 8lb2oz

born at 38+4 at 10lb4oz, I was still groggy from anaesthetic so kept mumbling 10 4 not believing it 🙈

Yep. DC4 was supposedly 9lb at 37wks. He was only 9lb5 when induced at 40wks. (Based on their estimates should have been 10lb7 by then)

DC5 was supposedly 6lb9 at 36wks. Born 9lb at 41wks (induced). Which is about right BUT they told me she was average sized at 36wk 50th centile and she was actually 91st at birth.

My smallest was 8lb11 biggest 9lb10.

My experience anecdotally from the mums groups I've been on is that lots of the mums are told they're having big babies but most don't.

Our most recent we got estimated weights at growth scans, she's our 6th. 31+6 was 5lb 4oz, 35+6 was 7lb 12oz, born 38+6 10lb 15oz. I'd had 4 big babies before her so not a surprise she was big but she was bigger than I thought she'd be at that gestation.

Don't worry, bigger baby doesn't mean harder birth. My second birth was much easier, even though baby was much bigger - almost 9.5lbs

Chica1990 · 15/10/2021 04:14

My baby was estimated as 4 lb 5oz at 32 weeks and came out at 38+1 weighing 5lb 11oz (due to waters breaking, not induced because of growth chart concern).

We couldn't believe how tiny he was as I was measuring about 50th centile!

Cantchooseaname · 15/10/2021 04:26

Estimated 8lb 13 at 36 weeks, born 38 (after induction because she was “so big”) at 7 lb 3.

When I asked how she had lost 1.5lb in 2 weeks, THEN they explained that scans can be inaccurate.
Don’t even start on my reaction to trainee sonographer saying to supervisor “head circumference is off the chart. What do I put?”

I was utterly terrified for last 2 weeks, I wish I could have enjoyed it.

TheFamousMrEd · 15/10/2021 04:27

I had a scan 2 days before I gave birth. Baby was estimated 7lbs 13 and came out 6lbs 6 so I wouldn’t worry too much about the scan weight!

Elllicam · 15/10/2021 04:44

Mine was 7lb 8 at 36 weeks but then only 8lb 3 at 39 weeks (yesterday). I give birth today so I’ll let you know if it was accurate.

Pantaloony · 15/10/2021 05:19

Yes, mine was measuring the 50th centile at 36 weeks so anticipated birth weight of 7lb 7oz but she was born at full term weighing only 5lb 6oz so the scans are not accurate at all!

Elllicam · 16/10/2021 00:16

Update on this morning, she was born at 7 lb 3 so the growth scans were out.

stardust40 · 16/10/2021 00:34

Dd1 was 8lb12 on a 38 week growth scan. Induced at 39 weeks and she was born weighing 7lb7oz !
