Yolk sac seen at 5+3; then disappeared by 6+5?

This is long so I'm going to try and bullet point it:

  • In early pregnancy unit at 5wks + 3days due to cramping and spotting. Internal scan showed gestational sac with yolk sac measuring exactly 5+3.
  • 2 days later spotting becomes bleeding; I lose a large amount of tissue-like stuff, looked like a miscarriage. Dr books a scan for a weeks' time
  • Now 6wks + 5days I go for the scan expecting to have had a miscarriage. Sonographer says gestational sac is still there and has doubled in size. Yolk sac however is now nowhere to be seen (no fetal pole visible either)
  • 3 different sonographers look at the screen and none can see it. They discuss medication and D&C briefly, but then decide that due to gestational sac growth there's a "small chance" it's viable and if that was true they wouldn't want to interfere
  • One sonographer made it clear they would be very surprised if it was viable, but as a precaution they don't want to interfere until they can confirm with another scan in two weeks
  • Another sonographer sugar coats it a bit more, saying they just can't know anything until the rescan

Please could someone tell me if they've experienced this, or seen it at all?

When searching, barely anything comes up for this. I know the yolk sac can be missed at 6 weeks due to wrong dates. But if the yolk sac was clearly visible and even dated at 5+3... could it then just hide somewhere or not be seen a whole nine days later?

I just want to know if there's an actual possibility of a healthy pregnancy or if that's it. Two weeks is so long to still not know what's happening, and as selfish as this sounds I just want to stop stressing about doing all the right things and avoiding all the wrong things if it's a miscarriage anyway, if it's all for nothing.

I've had similar and unfortunately it was a miscarriage. I was a bit earlier than you, 5 weeks at first scan where we seen both sacs and went back at 6 weeks where only gestational sac was visible and I had to go back another week later for the confirmation scan. Gestational sac had gone by then too. I'd had bloods done which confirmed my HCG levels were dropping in between all this though so I was fully aware that it was over. Have you had any bloods done? If not, I'd be requesting bloods 48 hours apart as it will pretty much give you the confirmation you need Flowers

I don't know why but the sonographer told me there would be no point doing bloods in the mean time as it wouldn't tell us anything. I thought that was wrong but didn't want to argue it as thought she knows more than I do. Wish I would have pushed for it now though so I don't have to wait.

Thank you for your response, I appreciate it, I'm sorry you've been through that

The bloods would of as if done every 48 hours you can see if it's rising or going down which then confirms which way your pregnancy is going for you.
I'd be ringing GP op to ask.

I've got 2 family members & a colleague who all need blood tests at the moment (for non pregnancy related issues) and they've either been fobbed off as not 'necessary' although they were necessary a few months ago or told that they don't tick enough boxes anymore to qualify for blood tests, though 2 have fought that and finally had blood tests done. But my understanding at the moment is that NHS has shortages/issues around doing blood tests and are trying to avoid doing them unless they feel it's absolutely necessary.
In your case they might be feeling that since the scan in 2 weeks will give them the information they need, the blood tests would be 'unnecessary'. Obviously it's a long time for you to wait though so worth contacting the GP and seeing if you can have the blood tests.
