Induction and big baby??

Hi!!

I'm currently 36+6 and due to see the consultant later today for a scan. Although I am curious if anyone has been induced due to baby measuring big?

I have been admitted to hospital on 2 occasions due to blood pressure concerns, so that and the fact baby us measuring slightly bigger is why I've been in for more scans.

I had my last scan at 32 weeks and baby was 5.5lbs. I'm getting to the stage now where I'm so uncomfortable and fed up (I was very petite pre pregnancy). I'm just wondering if I would be offered an induction before 40 weeks if baby is still measuring big?

I don't know if you will be but I wouldn't stress too much. I was very Petite and DD arrived at 8lb 3oz without so much as a stitch.

My DF was also very petite and her DC2 was 9lb 9oz without any problems.

I'm not sure size has much relation to how you'll birth if I'm honest.

Being relaxed might though. Have you considered a birthing pool if it's available and have you tried some hypnotherapy?

I’m 37 and at 35+6 babies estimated weight was 7lb 7oz. Consultant wanted me to have an induction at 40 weeks. I declined and now have an elective c section booked in for 39+4, which after going through the risks with me the consultant was fine with…

I just didn’t want to risk an emergency c section, shoulder dystocia and trauma to the pelvic floor from giving birth to a larger baby

I know there’s lots of happy natural births with larger baby but knowing my luck I just didn’t want to take the risk. Good luck with the scan and whatever you decide x

I would go for an elective section to be honest. You'll get people coming on here saying that scans often estimate sizes wrong, which is true- but if your baby is larger then it's safer for baby to have a section (assuming it's after 39 weeks). An early induction has a good chance of being a very long drawn out process which may end in an emergency section anyway.

You might be offered induction - are you consultant or midwife led?

During my third pregnancy I was consultant led and I was offered - and refused - induction due to baby’s size. (In the end the baby arrived weighing 9lb 13oz on my due date, after an uncomplicated 4 hour labour with no tearing.)

There are pros and cons to induction, only you can decide - but you do have the option to refuse induction if it is offered. You need to weigh up the risks and benefits.

Good luck with the delivery!

Mine was 6lb 11 at 35 weeks. I’ve been offered an induction at 39 weeks which has baffled me as everywhere goes against early induction for big babies.

I’m back in this afternoon, 36 weeks, to request a c section. Not my ideal choice but the risks of a big baby natural delivery are too big for me.

Thank you so much ladies!!

I was midwife led until I turned 32 weeks then they decided to change me to consultant!

The reason I'm asking about the induction is because I want to try and avoid a c section! I would like to try the birthing pool ect. X

Early inductions are often very lengthy as baby isn't ready. If you go down that route set a time limit on it or you will end up exhausted and could need more interventions.

I've had lots of big babies. Our newest was measuring very big on scans and they did offer me induction or elcs at 39wk, I opted for elcs as I had an elcs with breech twins before her. I went in to labour early hours at 38+6, 20hrs in labour and then a c-section. She was estimated 5lb 4oz @ 31+6, 7lb 12oz @ 35+6 and birth weight was 10lb 15oz. I started to get scar rupture and lost a lot of blood so was very unwell, sods law she decided to come a day before my elcs. Her big brother was a similar size at 10lb 12oz (40+5 though), I had an unassisted vaginal birth with him but that was without a cs scar to worry about.

Good luck

How did it go OP?

happymum1001 · 14/10/2021 17:06

I have actually been sent to eou by my consultant regarding high blood pressure again so I'm still here 😭 but baby's growth has slowed now for some reason and he has dropped off the percentile lines so I am due to be back for a scan again on Saturday! Not what I was expecting at all!

Hoping your blood pressure comes down a bit Thanks
