I know from my sister how expensive nappies can be. I also know I have no idea how big baby will be when she arrives. I have tried looking but it there anywhere that you can get sample packs with all the different sizes for newborns of nappies? So you don't have to buy an entire pack of preemie ones etc?

thank you.

I don't know of any, was just planning to buy a few packs and then donate any sizes that I don't need to the food bank.
I guess you could do a swap with someone if you have friends or antenatal group due at similar time.

What would be really handy is to have a few people buy some different brands to try out, I know everyone has personal preference of branded or supermarket brands. My wider family are snobs about anything but pampers, can't wait to see their faces when I mention reusables!

I meant to add I'm planning on disposables for hospital and first few weeks while C-section heals as not planning on giving myself extra work then.

thanks for your response. a good idea to just buy and donate any sizes to a food bank. didn't think of donating left overs.

You are braver than me wanting reusables. i can barely cope with the idea of the increase in washing as it is

Lidl and aldi newborn/ small nappies are about 80p for a pack of 24 so wouldn't break the bank.

I've also received lots of donations from friends of size 1/2 that their babies grew out of too fast to use.

Nappies really don't have to be expensive. I've tried about 10 brands from Pampers premium to basic supermarket ones and I honestly can't tell the difference between cheap and expensive ones. Our favourite is actually the Aldi Mamia brand. A 24 pack of size 1 nappies is 79p so just over 3p a nappy. All nappies tell you the weight range on the pack and size 1 would probably be fine for all newborns except preemies or very large babies so I'd stock up on those. Worst case if you do need smaller or larger ones someone can go out and get them while you're in hospital (or wherever you're having baby).

I bought some size 0 nappies when I was told I was having a small baby but they don't go up very big at all, and now we're not in a concern category for size (who knows though) I've just got size 1s. They cover the vast majority of birth weights as far as I can tell, if you were having an unusually small or large baby you'd probably know about it by the time you were packing your bag?

As PP have said though don't get too hooked on one brand and stockpile, they are all slightly different. As for expense it's only Pampers that seem to be extortionate, we've had many of the supermarket ones at different sizes and I've never noticed much difference in the cost.

I don’t know about a starter pack but just to reassure you my baby was 9lb12oz and still wore size 1 nappies at first!
I agree with PP, buying from different brands gave us a good idea of what we liked

FingersofFish · 11/10/2021 17:29

Start with size 1s. If baby is super early send someone out to get smaller but this worked for us and we ended up with lots of friends donating size 1 to us as even their premies grew out of them really quickly! Good luck and I agree with others, go with own brand nappies, nearly everywhere does decent ones.

olderthanyouthink · 11/10/2021 18:12

Just get a few packs of size 1 and then get more when you need.

Cloth nappies aren't too bad for the washing, DC1s constant vomiting was worse and now getting her clothes generally messy, DC2s nappies dont add that much to the load and we very very rarely have a poo leak unlike when DC1 was in disposables Envy (not envy)

We downloaded the Emma’s diary app and collected the 3 packs (of which you can get 3 times each). One of the packs had a pack of pampers nappies and the other two a pack of wipes. There was also mini sudocrems etc which would be useful.
