Baby's abdomen measuring v large 36 week scan

Hi - wondering if anyone else has been in this position? Had a routine 36 week scan and my baby's abdomen is measuring about 99th centile. The sonographer was very surprised and measure it about 5 times. The head is also large (95th) but other measurements were average so overall baby's come out about 80th centile and I haven't been referred for diabetes testing or any other scans. I'm just a little worried I'm going to (a) have a huge baby or (b) that I do have gestational diabetes but it's not been picked up (though I was tested at 28 weeks and passed fine).
As usual, the sonographer wasn't reassuring at all 😂 but the midwife was and said the measurements can be inaccurate. I'm just surprised as my first baby was only 9th centile, apparently this one is already measuring heavier than my first baby was at birth...
Has anyone got any experience of this? I'm wondering if I should be cutting back on sugar etc, just in case of GD. I wish I could get another scan or something to check!

Thanks!

Bumping this! I'm still stressed - from looking at other threads it seems other women have been offered inductions/discussed c-sections with similar estimated weight as my baby (6lb14oz at 36 weeks) so I'm not sure why I wasn't referred for any further monitoring.
I just have this horrible feeling now that every day I'm still pregnant this baby is just getting bigger and bigger!
Not sure what I'm looking for - reassurance/advice from people who have been in a similar position I guess ...

First baby 7lb 8oz much bigger than expected, 2nd baby 10lb6oz much much bigger than expected but it was fine.

@6789Advice thanks! Can I ask if you had a vaginal delivery with your babies? Were you offered any alternatives when they realised your second would be big? I just can't get my head around delivering a big baby, my first was little and my labour went very smoothly...

Both vaginal,

I was massive with my 2nd but they kept saying I wasn't having a big baby so no alternative offered.

Growth scans aren’t always accurate but definitely discuss it with your midwife. I was told at 37 weeks baby was 7lbs 12oz but he was born at 42 weeks weighing 7lbs 4oz

Thanks for sharing your experiences both! Yes my midwife was reassuring and according to my chart it's 76th centile, which isn't scarily big. Just a bit concerned I should have had a follow up GTT. My next appointment isn't till 40 weeks, but maybe I'll call before then and ask to speak to someone.

Hi @TBC45678 just wondering how everything worked out for you and your birth? I’m 29 weeks and baby is currently measuring several weeks ahead for his tummy and head (femur normal length) and need to think about birth options

TBC45678 · 30/12/2021 11:12

Hi @HopefulRose - so I should have taken more notice of this as when baby arrived at 40+4 he was big - 9lb 11oz. Pretty amazing considering I'm small and my first baby was 6lb 11oz. All the midwives were amazed. I do feel like I slipped through the cracks in my antenatal care and there should have been some conversations about birth options, but actually in the end it was all fine. I had a vaginal delivery in 4 hours (with some first degree tears but nothing traumatic). To be honest I think if I'd had known how big he was I wouldn't have been able to do it, the fear would have stopped me, but actually it didn't feel too different to my first labour. And I'm certainly glad they didn't induce me to not allow me to go over my dates, which I think may have happened if they realised his size.

Hope this is helpful!

Thanks @TBC45678 and glad the birth went well! Sorry you feel like you slipped through the cracks with your care. I can imagine that’s happening quite a lot at the mo with everything going on. I have another growth scan next week so will be interesting to see how (not so) little one’s growth is progressing. Thanks for replying.
