IKEA cos its cheap

BertieBotts · 10/10/2021 08:37

Ikea. Everything else is insanely overpriced and a lot of it is crap quality too.

Also buy normal drawers etc, not special nursery ones.

Winterfellismyhome · 10/10/2021 08:38

We had a mothercare cot and ikea for the rest. Dont bother with a changing table

Marmite27 · 10/10/2021 08:41

We had IKEA kids wardrobes, a feeding chair and cot from mothercare. We had a cot top changer which was really useful, I didn’t want a proper changing table due to space and cost.

Parker231 · 10/10/2021 08:43

We didn’t buy nursery furniture. A cot and regular wardrobe and chest of drawers. Nursery furniture is a rip off and has a short life. Didn’t buy a changing table. Used the floor. Didn’t want to come upstairs every time a nappy change was needed.

NavigationCentral · 10/10/2021 08:46

What is nursery furniture? I wouldn’t want to do what Pinterest says.

Ours are 5 years old and 19 months old. We got them a cot, storage for clothes that is lasting beyond infancy and very useful as standard furniture.

Fallagain · 10/10/2021 08:48

You don’t need nursery furniture. Just normal furniture, it will last much longer and cot if you will be using one.

ohfook · 10/10/2021 08:50

Same here - IKEA because I didn't want to spend a lot.

stormelf · 10/10/2021 08:58

We didn't get specific nursery furniture for dd1, just a cot, an antique cupboard that we already owned and an antique chair that we already owned that I thought would be used for a feeding chair. Never actually used the chair as I preferred to feed both DC downstairs, the chair is now in the bathroom to give me somewhere to sit while they are playing in the bath.

Parker231 · 10/10/2021 09:25

Nursery furniture is the same as a changing bag. If you buy one specifically marketed as a baby product, you will pay a premium often for a lesser product.
If you buy regular furniture for their room and a normal rucksack you will save a fortune and get more use from them.

DappledThings · 10/10/2021 16:24

Other than a cot we didn't buy any nursery furniture either. Bought a plain chest of drawers and jazzed it up with some different knobs.

DC are 5 and 3 now and I'm starting to think wardrobes might be useful. Chests of drawers have been fine till now.

CTR1000 · 10/10/2021 20:20

That seems fairly unanimous, thanks!

I bought second hand on gumtree. You can get some amazing deals there. I think the set I bought must have cost c£1,000 to begin with, but I paid £200. It's not new, but being wood, it doesn't really matter if it looks a bit used, and it's still in really good condition. I've no regrets. So many people spent thousands buying the perfect set, and second hand you can get amazing deals. Ebay another option, but gumtree might be better because more local.

tigerbreadandtea · 10/10/2021 21:13

Argos, bought a triple wardrobe, no need to get nursery furniture.

Tina8800 · 10/10/2021 21:49

I also bought second hand on gumtree. It's mamas and papas mia 3 furniture set, and amazing quality. Ridiculously expensive when new ( over a 1000) but with second hand I got an amazing deal and it's like new.

shivawn · 11/10/2021 09:58

All you really need furniture wise is a cot and a good chest of drawers with a changing mat on top. We also got some cute wallpaper, a nursery mat and some nice wall decor. We put up a couple shelves over the changing table with cute animal themed storage baskets for toiletries and other bits and pieces. Oh and last but not least is the 4 foot high stuffed giraffe that my mother bought us! 😄 I really enjoyed decorating the nursery.

PurBal · 11/10/2021 10:05

£50 secondhand for corned, chest of drawers and wardrobe plus £18 for a new mattress. All solid pine. All you need is a place for LO to sleep. We don’t and never have had a changing table, we change DS on the floor. We would have gone floor bed route but our house is a fixer-upper.

PurBal · 11/10/2021 10:07

Pretendingtosmile · 11/10/2021 10:26

Another vote for IKEA cot £30 I think (we later got a cot bed as we moved and baby got his own room) he now uses it converted as a toddler bed with the sides off.

We used a changing table from ikea £25 bc I just wanted to have all the bits and bobs stored in an accessible way for night changes. We were in a flat so I did all the changes there. (disability means I can't change nappies on the floor)

I got a nice nappy caddy from Sainsbury's £3 when we got a bigger flat. That was handy.

I found a clothing rail £15 Argos useful for his clothing/ sleep suits as I prefer to hang rather than fold. He still uses that now

I wouldve loved to splash out on a colour themed nursery set of furniture but they are £££ and realistically they stick the word "baby/nursery" on the label and charge you double. like they do with weddings but that's another rant

ParkheadParadise · 11/10/2021 10:38

I bought Nursery furniture from a local independent VERY VERY expensive baby shop. I also bought dd clothing from newborn till 2 years from the same shop.
The owner couldn't believe her luck she sent me a friends request on fB. She was probably raging when I told her I wouldn't be having any more kids. I spent £££££'s in her shop, dh would roll his eyes every time I came home with several bags.

I did give it all to a charity that helped teenage mums, it was still in great condition after dd grew out of it.

IcedCoffeeAlways · 11/10/2021 10:51

@CTR1000 completely agree with everyone else. Actual “nursery furniture” is a waste of money.
Our nursery is a pretty big room and we bought the IKEA Songesand chest of 6 drawers & the matching triple wardrobe. Changed the handles on both. We did spend a bit more on a Silver Cross cot bed that will last until DS is about 4 just because we liked it 😅🤷🏻‍♀️ Bought a regular big comfy armchair and footstool for feeding/story time.

Wedge changing mat worked great on top of the chest of drawers when DS was small. Meant I didn’t need to be up and down to the floor in the first few weeks. Now that he’s 11m and wild, he gets changed on the floor 😅

I love having the triple wardrobe. I use the double part for DSs current clothes then the single part for bits that I’ve picked up in bigger sizes in the sale or whatever and it keeps things nice and organised but I can see what he has so everything gets used 👍🏻

iusedtoloveopalfruits1 · 11/10/2021 10:59

I got a cot with a table top changer attachment from argos.
We still use it and my son is nearly 2 it saves trying to get him dressed on the floor as i have a bad back and now he can run away!

Mothercare, it was fairly expensive but I loved it and got so much use out of it for both DC and its still like new so will get some money back when I resell. Although I don't think you can get Mothercare furniture anymore, my friend recently got a very similar set from Mamas and Papas and you really do get what you pay for, very sturdy and really makes the baby's room.
