What to buy new for second baby?

So, baby number 2 is due in the next few weeks and we already have almost all the main essentials from our first child: pram, snuzpod, playmat, clothes, baby bath etc.

Did you buy anything brand new for your second (or third/fourth etc) child? We’d like to get one or two things that are just his, like a special toy, blanket and coming home outfit, and obviously we need to buy nappies/wipes/dummies/bottles etc. We’re planning on using the tommee tippee perfect prep machine we used with our first after it’s had a good clean, new filter etc and also the Milton steriliser. Just wondering if anyone else has any other ideas I may have missed or forgotten about?

Thanks! Smile

We have the stokke Tripp trap highchair. If we had a second I would buy the newborn attachment for it to keep second high up out the way of poking fingers if needed whilst I was sorting dinner etc

PanicBuyingSprouts · 08/10/2021 20:34

I bought a better sling.

We've got new mattresses for things (they were in the loft...) and a few new clothing items as our very small stuff is unisex, we didn't find out with her sister so although I'm not mad into 'girly' the stuff I bought to replace what didn't survive the nappy explosions of DD1 is a bit more feminine. She's a totally different season to her sister too so have bought more cold weather kit than she had.

I'll get new pram toys if we need to after gifts and things as they got quite grubby with DD, I've kept one or two back but think will bin and start again tbh.

I've got a Moses basket this time too because I want her to have her own bed space downstairs so DD knows to leave her little sister in peace, but I've picked one that looks like it will be ok as a laundry or toy basket after rather than a traditional one 😂

New mattress for them to sleep on? Check the date on your newborn carseat? The plastic can degrade so they do have a shelf life!

2021mumma · 08/10/2021 20:38

I bought a new breast pump- couldn’t be doing with one with wires/being plugged into wall with having a toddler too so bought the Elvie- it’s amazing I can multitask whilst pumping and it’s so quick can pump a full bottle in about 5 mins instead of about an hour with my last pump!! Look for anything like this that will make you life easier with two

YukoandHiro · 08/10/2021 20:38

I bought a jungle gym as we didn't have it with the first one and a few new clothes eg winter coat because they were newborn at different times of the year.

I also bought a coffee cup holder for my pram as first time round it felt an indulgence but second time it was lockdown and all cafes were closed so it was an absolute essential

I bought some nicer things than I could afford when I had everything to buy. Merino kids sleeping bag and a really nice bamboo baby blanket

elliejjtiny · 08/10/2021 20:47

I got another (2nd hand) cot for ds2 because ds1 was still using his cot. Each baby had a new mattress. I bought a new going home outfit for each baby and a few bits of warmer clothes for ds2 as ds1 was born during a heatwave and ds2 was born in spring. dc3 had a new snowsuit and more blankets (winter baby). dc4 had some new smaller clothes as he was prem. Dc3 and dc5 had new bouncy cradle things as the frames were knackered after 2 babies. Dc3, dc4 and dc5 had new car seats as first 2 car seats got trashed and dc4 was still in the baby car seat when dc5 was born.

A playpen, I’d not needed one with the first but it was mainly to put a barrier between the kids if I needed to leave the room briefly.
Some different clothes as the basics were ok but the opposite season, so needed warmer things in a different age.
Mattress.
Playmat, because dd1 had trashed it with sick. In fact anything damaged I got rid of.
A buggy board. I’ve also seen some ride on scooters that can attach to a pushchair and then change into a scooter as they get older which looked good.
A rocking swing, again not needed with dd1 as I would rock her but it was handy to get #2 off to sleep so I could spend time with the older one.
Dd was also very possessive of her books so it’s worth having a few things that are clearly for the baby, to get the idea of sharing belongings but they still are yours going I think.

Please don’t use a prep machine, they can be quite dangeorus xx

Rnm62 · 08/10/2021 21:01

How come? Sad Xx

Can you elaborate please? Slightly concerned now as I use it all the time with my son xx

If they were dangerous they wouldn't be allowed for sale.

Thousands of parents use them and it is fine.

Just clean thoroughly using the cleaning cycle as often as recommended, give a proper wipe down in/out and use the official filters and all should be good.

ChikiTIKI · 08/10/2021 21:04

For my second I bought new vests, newborn size, as with my first I was clueless and didn't know that size existed! The first had " up to one month " size and would have been too big for newborn anyway, whereas we were told the second one was going to be small.

Having a third soon and I just have to get them some of their own vests now! I have kept each babies first little vests as a keepsake and they stay in my drawer rather than going in to the loft with all the other clothes when not being used.

It’s thought the hot shot isn’t hot enough to kill the bacteria that can be present in powder formula, as the water hasn’t been heated to boiling to sterilise.

There’s also some concern about build up gunk even when regularly cleaned.

Tommy tippee say they’re perfectly safe but haven’t made their research public which is quite shady.

elht.nhs.uk/application/files/4915/5533/6985/Statement_on_formula_preparation_machines_Nov_2016.pdf

Personally I’d make up 2 bottles and keep one in the fridge and then warm it up or just buy some ready made formula for the night feeds if I was formula feeding xx

Sleeplessem · 08/10/2021 21:11

Sorry @MarshmallowsOnToast that’s utter crap! What a silly argument! We all know cot bumpers aren’t safe and yet they are sold. We know sleepyheads aren’t safe and yet they’re sold. We know sleep hammocks for babies aren’t safe and they are sold.

Such a daft argument.

No mum shaming, it seems like a brilliant idea even considered it with my first (we ended up ebf but combi fed in the beginning) but my midwife cautioned against it and I read up on it and can see why. For me not worth the risk, there’s a reason the nhs advise against them xx

mummyh2016 · 08/10/2021 22:32

@Rnm62 I used a perfect prep with my first and will be getting another one for this baby. As long as you clean it properly you should have no issues, and like you say you used it last time.

Yeah I’ve always made sure it’s cleaned/wiped down properly and change the filters when recommended etc. Had no issues using it with my son and it makes life so much easier x

I am due in 3 weeks,.DS1 is 2.5 yo.
I bought a new mattress for the cot and I will buy a new manual milk pump. The rest has been instensively cleaned Grin

T0rt0ise · 09/10/2021 03:34

Second is due in 8 weeks and we've bought/are buying

  • double buggy/bike trailer (21mo between them)
  • new car seat
  • a few new sleepsuits, vests and outfits as most of the stuff for my first in that size was borrowed
  • steriliser (again it was borrowed with the first)

Everything else we have/will borrow again :)
