Early Pregnancy - Constant Nausea - Is this Normal?

Hi

I'm really in the dark on this and so I'm really hoping I'm not sounding like a hypercondriac but I'm currently 7 weeks pregnant with my first child and I've had constant nausea now for nearly two weeks with sickness throughout the day(averaging being sick about 5-10 times a day, sorry TMI I know!!) .... Anyway I wanted to see if this was normal?

Obviously I'm really excited about the baby but I'm feeling really down about the nausea...which is only amplified every time I walk into the kitchen/smell food. I've also had the most shocking diet in the last couple of weeks as a result, I only seem to be able to keep crisps, dry potato, ice pops and boiled sweets down!

I've got my first midwife appointment on Tuesday, do you think I should bring it up or am I being dramatic and this is something everyone has to put up with in pregnancy??

Thank you 🥰

You are definitely not being dramatic! I am the same through pregnancy and I got through 3 just putting up with it thinking it was normal

You can get tablets from the doctors to try and to be honest I wouldn't worry about your diet as long as you can keep something down that's all that matters.

Good luck, I hope it gets better for you.

I was sick right the way through pregnancy and when I gave birth I was 10kg lighter than when I got pregnant.

Definitely mention it to your midwife, as she would be able to decide at what level it becomes a problem. My midwife wasn't concerned that I was throwing up several times a day right the way through.

I think I lived on Wagon Wheels, Iced Buns and Coco Pops for a while when I was pregnant as I craved those things and was able to keep them down. Normally I wouldn't eat them at all Grin

Nausea and sickness is normal yes but being sick 5-10 times a day is a lot and quite extreme! Definitely talk to your GP and ask to try some medication. It might not stop the nausea but hopefully reduce how often you’re being sick. Poor you, it’s awful. Eat whatever you can stomach and don’t worry too much about your diet right now.

That’s very early to be that sick. Could it be twins?! Def mention it, you shouldn’t have to struggle on with this and pretend it’s all fine.

Avarua · 08/10/2021 17:32

Nirmal but do mention it.
Somewhat counter-intuitively, eating regularly keeps the nausea away for many women. Eat something as soon as you wake up, for example, even if you don't particularly feel like it.

Sounds like you could have Hyperemesis Gravidarum. If it is you will want to seek help early, as the earlier you can treat it, the more likely you can control it. So definitely mention it at your appointment. There’s a HG chat on here that’s really helpful with lots of links and support. Hope it isn’t and that the sickness passes. Good luck!

Thank you all for your advice, I'll definitely bring it up to my midwife on Tuesday...I'm so glad it's not me bring dramatic, all I keep thinking is this is going to be a long few months if this is how I'm supposed to feel 😂....and thank you for the reassurance about my diet!! Before getting pregnant I'd been so focused on making sure I was in the best possible health for a potential pregnancy and now I am I feel like all that has gone out the window!!

I'm also trying to keep the pregnancy a secret from family and friends until we've had our first scan and I feel like it's near impossible with my current state (pretty certain most have guessed tbh but are just playing along lol!)

Xxx

I felt like this from the very start with both pregnancies, and it lasted all the way through though lessened a little after 30 weeks. So yes it is normal for some people. It becomes a problem if it is so excessive you can't keep fluids down so make sure you drink little and often.

Do speak to your midwife though. I ended up taking cyclizine both pregnancies to try and reduce symptoms a bit because it was constant. I'd vomit in the work car park, in the loo as soon as I got in and then just be retching and vomiting bile all day. Sending sympathy!

Keeping some food down is great but it does sound like Hyperemesis with so much throwing up. Mines kicked off at 6 wks & peaked 9-12. Where I couldn't even keep water down. If you stop keeping food / drink down then go to a&e before you get too dehydrated.
Doctors can prescribe anti sickness, I couldn't have survived without them. Do get in touch,

This support group is fab!

You're better speaking to gp as midwife can't prescribe. I have hg and have since about 6 weeks and I take prochloperazine 3x a day. I'm still sick on it but it takes the edge off and I can juat about force myself to function.

Had nausea from 4+3 with not much sickness then from week 8 ramped up to constantly, with sickness everyday from 9-10am a half. Travel sickness bands made a big difference and I could actually keep going while I wore them. The Headspace Guide to a Mindful Pregnancy was a huge help and there are some good meditations that help morning sickness online too. Weeks 9-10 I was exhausted and a massive hormonal puddle of tears but from 10+2 started to have gaps of feeling better and less nausea and feeling human again. 11+2 and starting to enjoy the pregnancy now the nausea, exhaustion and hormonal sledgehammer of emotions are settling down.

MrsB0009 · 10/10/2021 15:14

Oh good to hear your starting to enjoy your pregnancy more now @ponymum1980 ...hopefully this nausea and sickness starts to ease off over the next few weeks!! I've bought some travel sickness bands and I felt slightly better this morning to not be up and about at 5:30am so maybe it's also my body trying to tell me to not rush about lol!!
