Big baby trial

Has anyone done this or is on this?

Mine is 6lb 11 at 35 weeks so I’ve opted to join. If I’m chosen I could be induced at 38 weeks. If not it will be 39 weeks.

Just wondering if it was any good?

Thanks everyone. I’m really kicking myself that I just accepted it and walked away.

My next scan and consultant appointment isn’t until 39 weeks. Can I get in earlier do you think to request a c section?

I had a mild prolapse after dd3 and really don’t want that again.

My son was 11lb 1 and they had no clue he was so large and Labour was tough as I just had gas and air.
They induced me with my daughter just in case she was also big and it was hellish I'd would have much rather do the previous birthing. My daughter ended up being just 8.8 Hmm

@Bennetgirl

I agreed to the trial! Went on for a sweep at 38 weeks with the plan to be induced at 39 weeks as my baby was measuring big

When I went in for my sweep I was already 4cm dilated had my baby very next day with no intervention

ColintheCrow · 07/10/2021 22:00

Predicted 7lb odd at 39 weeks... under the high risk clinic due to previous medical history. 10lb 7 at birth and no problems whatsoever.

ColintheCrow · 07/10/2021 22:01

Oh induced. 3rd was induced at 38 weeks and 8lb 12 .

Greyrootszerohoots · 07/10/2021 22:03

I was induced on due date as baby measuring big. She was 9lb 4 - my dh and I are both around the 6ft mark so she was never going to be small.

I won’t be having another, but based on my experience I would refuse an induction for anything other than a serious medical condition.

mrssunshinexxx · 07/10/2021 22:13

@Bennetgirl scans can be really
Inaccurate they told me my last was going to be over 9lb she was barely 7lb I wouldn't go for an induction that early or at all

BaaBaaEmily · 07/10/2021 22:52

@Bennetgirl just because you've signed up to the trial doesn't mean you have to participate. You can always withdraw, especially if you have doubts. Speak to your midwife again and ask to go through all the options, induction, c-section etc as you want to make an informed decision.

DoucheCanoe · 07/10/2021 23:03

Echoing what others have said but I wouldn't be options for an induction unless required either.

I was told at 36 weeks that my bump was measuring "bloody big" and to prepare for a "bruiser" expected to be around 10lbs by 40 weeks. Born at 41 weeks weighing 6lbs15 Hmm

bumbledeedum · 07/10/2021 23:48

I still don't really understand how this trial passed an ethics commitment. It seems ridiculous and irresponsible to be experimenting on pregnant women and babies solely based on fairly unreliable scans for size especially given the increased risks of EMCS and instrumental deliveries in inductions.

Bennetgirl · 08/10/2021 07:57

Thanks everyone. I’m not on the trial yet but my name has been put forward.

I think yesterday I was in shock that I could have a natural labour. Baby had been breech or transverse and they thought I might have an extra placenta lobe. Both were fine. I’d finally come to terms with having a c section.

I wish I’d said no yesterday and asked for a c section.

I know this baby is big. I’ve known from the start.

My dilemma now is that my next scan and consultant appointment isn’t until 39 weeks. I feel that’s too late. My midwife is amazing so I’ll see what she can do on Tuesday but she has said she’d back me up for a c section due to the size and my worries about forceps and shoulders.

You could go into natural labour before 39 weeks which you're a lot less likely to have interventions. I've always heard big babies are actually easier to birth.

I was pushed for a early induction but declined. They told me I'd definitely end up having at episiotomy and baby could get stuck etc. But my worst nightmare was being induced. I went into labour naturally at 39 weeks, gave birth naturally, no gas and air, no epidural, no interventions etc. He was 9lbs.

Try not to worry about it too much and don't let them push you into doing anything you don't want to do. It's your baby and your choice at the end of the day.

Maybe in advance of your 39 week apt do your own research and decide whether you would prefer a c section or induction so you are prepared for the apt.

And good luck! Grin

I would love to go into labour naturally! I had an induction last time but was 16 days so my body was very ready!!

My biggest birth fear is forceps. I’d go got a c section to avoid that and a c section is my second biggest fear.

Safe to say dp will be having the snip once this is over!
