Down syndrome screening results

Hello,
I'm 27 and I had my 12 week screening done and it has come back with a 1 in 91 chance of down sydrome (1.1% chance). The fluid at the neck was in the low risk range but my HCG and PAPPA levels increased the risk level. Myself and my partner don't feel at this point that we would be able to have an abortion if we had further tests and confirmed it would be DS so we're not sure what to do about getting a test or not. I worry that if we get told it is likely from further tests, it will affect my ability to properly enjoy the pregnancy. Has anyone whose been in this situation got any advice?

Hey

We said the same results last week but 1 in 80

We opted for the NIPt blood test to be sure and got results back yesterday and all fine

I'd suggest doing it for your peace of mind, takes 5 working days to get back and nhs do it for free

As above have NIPT test done

Posted too soon. If baby has got issues it will need help at birth -it’s best to know what the issues are as far as possible. Burying your head in the sand isn’t really an option when you’re pregnant.

Agree with others, my risk of DS was 1:4 and I opted for CVS. Which was invasive but a harmony test wasnt an option at that time. my result ws fine but I couldnt have continued with my pregancy not knowing

If the NT was normal, it looks like you got pushed into the higher risk category from bloodwork alone.

We had similar odds but only for Edwards/Patau and I'm a decade older than you. So the slightest hiccup in bloods would automatically have tipped me into high risk group anyway.

We had a scan and amnio and everything was fine.

I didn’t have these tests with either of my pregnancies, when I got asked I said no because regardless of if they had it or not I would be continuing with the pregnancy so That was just my preference. When my mum was pregnant with my younger brother she got told from these tests he was high risk for Down syndrome and that she would need to have further tests, she constantly worried for weeks in the end to be told everything was fine so I never went ahead with the tests, both mine are healthy.

My Aunty had these tests and got told the results were low risk but her daughter was born with Down syndrome. I’m sure everything will be fine, most of the time the further tests come back as normal. But if you are going to go ahead with the pregnancy regardless of the outcome you could not do the test, however there would be no point worrying for the rest of your pregnancy and getting stressed out about it which will only make things worse. I’m sure everything will be fine but I think you will feel better knowing( whatever the outcome) rather than spending the rest of your pregnancy worrying.

I would recommend going for the NIPT. Exact same thing happened to me a few weeks ago, I was adamant that I didn't want the amnio and that we would definitely continue with pregnancy either way but the NIPT is harmless and gives you a 90% probability. Mine came back high risk for DS and there are now lots of other tests I can have done eg a close up scan on baby's heart to look for abnormalities (which is quite common in DS babies).

Thank you everyone. There's been a lot of information to try and process today!

Hello I am new here and have read lots of posts about this but just wanted to get some reassurance I guess. On Monday I had my 12 week scan I was meant to be from my last period 11 weeks and 5 days but baby was measuring at 12 weeks and 3 days which I know is normal. I had my screening done and NT was 2.1 mm which I think is in the normal range and the rest of the scan was fine. I then had bloods taken and got the call on Wednesday that I was at high risk for DS with a 1 in 87 chance. My bloods were hgc 5.02 MoM and PAPP-A 1.12MoM I am 36 classed as slightly over weight and will be 37 when baby arrives. I have taken the non invasive blood test which I will get back in 10 days. Just was wondering what others experiences have been and if anyone had similar results with a positive outcome. We will keep the baby regardless but it has still bern a shock to the system. Thank you for reading my story.

Hey @Pegasus21 you might get more responses if you start your own thread x

DH and I felt similar- we decided for us, it was best not to have the screening tests at all, as we felt it would cause anxiety without affecting our decision to proceed with the pregnancy. We made the decision knowing we are having the baby in a maternity hospital attached to a tertiary paediatric hospital.

Hope you make the right decision for you. There is a 99% chance your baby doesn't have Down's Syndrome too.
