Is it safe to have 3 cesareans?

I have a15 year old and 18 month old, both cesarean. We are talking about possibly trying for another baby. Is it actually safe to have 3 cesareans? I'm also hitting 39 so slightly worried about that too. ☺️

Shouldn't you ask your Dr about this? It depends really on you.
I know historically the advice was no more than 2, but my Aunt (back in the 70s) had a daughter, and then twins and sadly one of the twins died. She wanted a third after that, and the Dr said she'd be fine, and she was. (Obviously all C-sections, and she knew that everything would be from first pregnancy, as otherwise I wouldn't be telling you this.)

Usually, especially if one was 15 years ago.

I was warned in no uncertain terms after my 3rd that if I a 4th pregnancy would put my life at risk - the surgeon came back the next day to warn both DH and I on the ward in case we hadn't taken it in on the day of the caesarean. If your second section had left your womb in a state then you should have been similarly warned at the time.

If your sections were uncomplicated and you didn't hemorrhage you'd probably be fine having a third - it used to be possible to ask for a debrief from the surgeon/ team/ who did your previous delivery, or at least from a relevant doctor with your notes ... From what I've heard if the NHS recently I wouldn't bet that's still possible, but you could try...

Yeah I will be... just wanted to hear others stories and see if it was actually possible.

My Mum had 4. She's 75. So far so good.

scrivette · 06/10/2021 23:03

I know someone who had 4 and was fine.

CandyLeBonBon · 06/10/2021 23:03

I've had 3 and I'm still here. Had my last at 39.

BakingOfTheFoodCats · 06/10/2021 23:05

I heard 3 was the limit not 2? But guess it depends on the person, I’ve had 2 emcs

NoTimeToDye · 06/10/2021 23:06

Do you have your discharge paperwork from when you left hospital after your last one? I think they say whether the surgeon advises against another or not.

furbabymama87 · 06/10/2021 23:07

I've had 4. It was ok, was warned of possible complications after my 3rd but I was fine. Not having any more though.

RussianSpy101 · 06/10/2021 23:09

I’ve had 3. I was told after the last one not to have any more as they had to do a classical incision as baby’s heart rate dropped so they had to get him out quickly.
This means a much higher risk of uterine rupture. You need to check your notes really.

wanttomarryamillionaire · 06/10/2021 23:12

Ive had four, all fine.

sarah13xx · 06/10/2021 23:18

Yeah I’m sure they become trickier for the surgeon each time having to negotiate scar tissue etc but I’ve heard 3 is the maximum. I thought I only wanted two kids, only have one baby so far and it was a planned section. Since having him I’ve thought I don’t know if I could only do this once more and know it was my last baby ever 🙈 I have a boy and I would obviously love a girl to experience what that’s like but would also love a boy for my son to have a best friend. So whatever the next one was I think I’d consider having another!

Interesting to read NICE guidance -

"Inform women who have had up to and including 4 caesarean births that the risk of fever, bladder injuries and surgical injuries does not vary with planned mode of birth, but that the risk of uterine rupture is higher for planned vaginal birth."

I had 3, 2 elective for health reasons and the other emergency, had no problems with any of them

Moominmiss · 07/10/2021 09:15

I just had my 4th c section 5 weeks ago!

My children are 11, 9, 7 and now my baby.

My third c section was actually the trickiest in that the surgeon had trouble getting through my scar tissue and had to call for help during the surgery and it took a lot longer than the first 2 c sections.

This time around my consultant discussed in detail her plans, she explained that from the start there would be a few extra people in theatre to assist her and be on hand for any complications.

As it was, the section went amazingly well. They took their time getting to the baby so as to be careful not to damage my bladder etc, and stitching me up took a lot longer than usual, as well as me losing more blood than they like, but overall it went fab.

I did opt to get sterilised at the same time as I knew I was done, but wouldn’t want to risk a 5th section.

I am also 39.

You need to get medical advice. A lot depends on how the last two went and what state your womb was in. I was fine with 3 CS, my friend was told that anoyher would be very risky. She was told this after the third though, due to complications.
