Aspirin for pregnancy after miscarriage

So I found out today I'm pregnant after 2 miscarriages. I've started taking low
Dose aspirin and would love to hear success stories about aspirin to give me some hope!

Same here! 2 MC and took low dose aspirin throughout the third one which was successful. It's harmless to the baby and only has beneficial effects on the pregnancy (promotes blood flow in the placenta which reduces the chance of pre-eclampsia or clots later on). I did end up having to stop taking it around 36 weeks due to nosebleeds. The nosebleeds were normal for pregnancy but the aspirin made them much harder to stop. I was a bit anxious as it felt like a safety net was taken away but my doctor assured me that at the stage it's not a problem anymore.

SmileyClare · 06/10/2021 19:27

I think you should have the aspirin prescribed. Simply because you need to be a suitable candidate for taking aspirin as a blood thinner for a long period and advised on the correct dosage based on your medical history. Some doctors advise taking it after the viability stage (around 12 weeks) and It's not suitable for everyone. If you are prescribed, It'll then be on your notes in case of an emergency as it can cause excessive bleeding.

Wishing you a successful pregnancy Flowers

Were you prescribed it? I haven't been because my doctors won't test or investigate til my third mc xx

Although your doctor won't investigate or test the cause of your miscarriages, they'll probably allow you to take aspirin as a blood thinner unless you have medical issues such as blood clotting disorder, history of stroke or are on other medications.

It's worth getting a gp phone appointment to check and get advice. Good luck with everything x

@SmileyClare yes planning on getting one tomorrow 🤞🏼 thankyou x

Hi @bethamb!!

35 weeks here. One MC, and I self prescribed 150mg during ovulation when I conceived this pregnancy. One more week of taking it and I will stop. I’ve been open and honest with my midwife and consultant who were absolutely fine with it. I have had complications with this pregnancy, but nothing relating to taking aspirin.

Do what you feel comfortable with. I had mix reviews from Mumsnetters which was completely understandable. I don’t know if the aspirin helped this time, but I would take it again for any future pregnancies xxx

Cafeaulait27 · 07/10/2021 03:29

Two mcs here and on the third pregnancy I started taking 150mg aspirin after my own research from ovulation (as I read it can help with implantation).

There are many NHS leaflets and studies online which say as long as you have never had a stomach ulcer or any other reason why aspirin wouldn’t be allowed there is absolutely no risk involved in taking aspirin for mother or baby. In fact some trusts even offer it after recurrent miscarriages as a ‘can’t harm, might help’ basis as it seems to work and the investigations they do can take a long time and often come back inconclusive.

I am now 39 weeks and have my ELCS tomorrow. I wholeheartedly believe the aspirin got me this far.

I told my midwife at my booking appointment that I was taking it and she wasn’t bothered at all, none of the consultants or midwives I’ve told have had a problem with it.

I have seen some people disagree with taking it due to the excessive bleeding but I think that’s just something you monitor and stop taking it if you bleed. I haven’t had any issues and haven’t heard of anyone else having bleeding issues either due to aspirin (either on mumsnet, through researching or friends who recommended it to me). Good luck x

@bethamb I had had 4 miscarriages in a row and was referred for tests which all came back normal.

I ended up doing my own research and decided to start myself on 150mg aspirin from 1dpo on my next cycle.

I ended up getting my bfp at 8dpo and the pregnsncy seemed stronger straight away, my tests progressed perfectly, a scan at 5+4 showed a heartbeat, which was something we’d never seen before.

When I saw a midwife at 9 weeks she spoke with a consultant who said had I not already been taking aspirin, she would have started me on it.

I was consultant led throughout the pregnancy and was told to continue taking it until 36 weeks.

My baby boy was born nearly 5 weeks ago and everything was perfect!

I 100% credit the aspirin as being what made the difference. My consultant said that 150mg is the new nhs recommended dose and that it’s such a low dose that she would have prescribed it on a ‘might help, won’t do any harm’ basis.

Congratulations and good luck!

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I'd tell your midwife so it goes on your notes. I'm on aspirin this time around, it's noted in my file. I was told by midwife to take it at night always after food, and to stop at 36 weeks. I buy the 75mg dose, available from pharmacies, supermarkets etc

AppleBlueberryPie · 07/10/2021 10:30

Yes I was prescribed because I fortunately went to a private doctor who ran investigations before required the "third miscarriage" (very cruel rule). However I would probably have taken it myself OTC because there is a wealth of evidence for the benefits and relatively few risks. There are some doctors who believe all first-time mothers can benefit from taking it because it can prevent preeclampsia.

The one thing to remember is that in the event of dental procedures, accidents or surgery you need to stop taking it because of potential bleeding complications and of course make the doctors aware that you've been taking it.

GinnyBee · 07/10/2021 11:37

I'm taking it now. I've had two mc inside a year, no children. Didn't qualify for the recurrent miscarriage referral after only two, but the consultant agreed to prescribe progesterone. I then tried asking my GP repeatedly about aspirin, just a simple yes or no for is it safe to try, but they wouldn't say anything. One said at one point that she would email the consultant for comment but I never heard anything back, and the next GP I spoke to just said I should be under obstetrician care who could advise on aspirin, but wouldn't refer me.

So after my own research I started taking it when I got my first positive test. I'm now 7+4 and early scan last week looked as expected but my first pregnancy ended after a successful early scan so I'm not out the woods yet.

GinnyBee · 07/10/2021 11:40

Oh, and to add I managed to get basic blood tests through my GP - full blood count, thyroid function and clotting screen + APS antibodies. All came back normal.

@Moominmiss

Thank you for your contribution this really has brought me back some hope as currently experiencing my 4th chemical pregnancy in 4 cycles

I know what I'll be doing next cycle 🤞🏽

bethamb · 14/10/2021 18:19

Unfortunately I miscarried again at exactly 5 weeks again despite being on aspirin 💔

Justsaying22 · 14/10/2021 19:00

I had 3 miscarriages and so took aspirin for the next pregnancy and had my son. I hope ever goes well for you x

RosieRainbow1986 · 14/10/2021 19:26

Hi everyone, watching this with interest as I had a miscarriage at the beginning of August. Am currently on my first cycle since, 4/5dpo and have started taking aspirin, 75mg after doing lots of reading on it. My friend was also advised to take it by a consultant after 4 miscarriages. Not sure if its what helped but she dod have a successful pregnancy taking it. I think I'm putting a lot of hope in it tbh, but we'll see...fingers crossed...

positiveovernegative · 14/10/2021 20:45

@RosieRainbow1986 good luck keep us updated with how you go. I've got 24 days until I ovulate but plan to take it once I've ovulated.

@bethamb so sorry xx

RosieRainbow1986 · 14/10/2021 21:27

@bethamb I'm so sorry to hear this, thinking of you ❤
