Hi everyone, so iv had a terrible week. Went for 20 week scan and they have advised me baby has enlarged nuchal fold 7.3
Now on my 12 week scan everything was all normal. Even my bloods came back as low risk 🤷‍♀️ nothing else has been picked up, baby is all in portion for 20 weeks gestation.
I'm just looking for people's experiences if u could share them please. I'm in 2 minds about having the amnio. I'm scared I'll lose baby but on the other hand I'd like to know what I'm gonna be up against. I feel like I'm being utterly selfish. My head is all over the place. Ty ladies for hearing me ramble on x

I dont think you have to have an amnio anymore. NIPT was rolled out everywhere as of 1st July.

Pinkywoo · 02/10/2021 21:33

I had an amino on Monday, I was offered NIPT but at my age (40) and quad test result (1 in 4 for Downs) it isn't as accurate. Amnio gives a definite answer and the results come back quicker so I chose that option. Obviously it's personal choice and there is a 1 in 200 chance of miscarriage, you just have to be decide which is the best option for you. Flowers

This is all they offered me. They ruled out other abnormalities on my scan xx

Many years ago I had an amnio due to my age . I was petrified but it was painless and the results came back clear . I didn’t want to know baby’s sex do was very definite they must not tell me . Good luck x

Pinkywoo · 03/10/2021 10:22

It was so much better than I was expecting, obviously I was really nervous but the doctor and assisting midwife were lovely. I just felt pressure rather than pain, they went in next to my bellybutton and me and DH watched the ultrasound screen so could see exactly what was happening. It was done on Monday morning and the same midwife that was there for the amnio called me with the results on Wednesday afternoon, happily everything was fine and the baby doesn't have Downs.

Have you decided to go ahead with it?

Clairemomof7 · 03/10/2021 11:58

I'm honestly not sure what to so. I do want to know but I'm so so scared that I'll lose him. If u dnt mind me asking was your nuchal measurement over what it should be?
Also how did u feel after the procedure? Ty so much for sharing your experience and I'm really happy that your results came bk clear ❤

I had one 11 years ago with my last baby, it was not an uncomfortable procedure but for me i had to do it as I had to know what I was dealing with. I was pretty sure if there were any chromosomal abnormalities I would have had a termination. It might be worth asking the hospital what their personal statistics are re miscarriage, I know when I had mine the national risk of miscarriage was one figure, say 1% but at my hospital they said they’d not had one single amino related miscarriage in however many years so their figures were a lot lower.

Good luck. It’s a scary time. Do whatever you are comfortable with.

Clairemomof7 · 03/10/2021 12:12

This is the problem, I wouldn't terminate but I'd like to know what the future holds for us as a family, I need to mentally prepare myself. Also I asked the supporting Midwife how often she had seen the worse happen and she said, she had been there 4 years and hadn't seen it happen. They have booked me in for Tuesday so iv hot 2 days to decide. Ty lovely xx

It depends whether you would definitely terminate the pregnancy if the result was positive. I had amniocentesis at 18 weeks. I had a bad reaction to the local anaesthetic used and was sore afterwards from the large needle. The wait for a result was difficult as I really didn't want to have an even later termination. I found out all was clear at 20 weeks. If you don't want an abortion then it's not worth having it done. My DD had a scan at 20 weeks where she was told that it looked like the baby had Downs. I paid for a scan at a private hospital where she was told that she had been scared for nothing as the baby was fine. It was very detailed and done by a consultant, so that's an alternative to amino.

Pinkywoo · 03/10/2021 15:15

Thankyou, it was a big relief! I felt ok afterwards, a bit twingey (good reason to have a lie down while DH looked after our toddler!) and just took it easy for a couple of days. The sonographer couldn't actually get a nuchal measurement at my dating scan as I was over 13 and a half weeks, that's why I had the quad test between 15-16w instead of the usual combined screening.

Clairemomof7 · 03/10/2021 16:45

Ohhh right I think I understand. The quad test was that a blood test?
And yes u make sure to take it easy now for another week or so. I know it's easier said than done because I have other children too. Xx

Yes it's just a blood test, they do it if you are further along than you thought so can't do the normal combined measuring and bloods.

FreezerBird · 03/10/2021 16:55

If you're certain you wouldn't terminate and are doing it for information, can you request a later amnio?

I had one at I think about 30 weeks, maybe more? For exactly the same reason, we wanted to know what to expect but wouldn't have terminated.
