Two miscarriages

Hello, I’m 38 and have suffered two missed miscarriages in the last few months (both around 6 weeks and the second was twins). With the current one I’m almost certain I am 8 weeks as I did an ovulation test when we conceived. We went today and said it was measuring 6 weeks but no heartbeat and the other was a lot smaller. They think one baby grew to 6 weeks and stopped and the other they’re not sure. I have a scan in 10 days but I’m pretty sure of the outcome. Has anyone here experienced the same thing and gone on to have successful pregnancies? Should I begin IVF now? I’m feeling extremely worried that it just won’t happen for me. Looking for stories for inspiration and feeling deflated so appreciate any advice! Thank you.

Hey, so sorry for your losses, I know how heartbreaking it is as I have also had 2.

My first one the baby had a HB but was measuring small, I then started spotting and after a few weeks I miscarried, it was horrible. I then had a very early miscarriage a few months later.

On the third try, after lots of research and friends recommendations I started taking 15g aspirin from ovulation every night and progesterone for the first 12 weeks. I got the aspirin over the counter and I private prescription for the progesterone as 2 losses doesn’t give me access to nhs investigations. The progesterone was expensive but I was desperate, and luckily after a few weeks I managed to speak to an nhs consultant and they agreed to prescribe the progesterone for the rest of the 12 weeks.

Both of these medications are taken on a ‘can’t hurt, might help’ basis so I’ll never know if they worked, but for me I strongly believe they did, especially the aspirin. The aspirin helps blood flow to the baby and therefore nutrients and oxygen, helping it develop. My theory was always that the first baby I miscarried was measuring small but had a HB because it wasn’t getting the nutrients it needed (but I’ll never know for sure).

I’m now 38 weeks with my third pregnancy and will continue to take the aspirin until I have baby next week via c section. I never thought it would happen for me but it looks like we might get our rainbow baby 🌈

This is just my experience but I would say you probably don’t need to go down the IVF route straight away, maybe try things like the aspirin first and see if it works as it may be all you need, as you seem to be able to get pregnant. But I’m not an expert ☺️

If you have any further questions feel free to ask - hope it works out for you xx

150mg* aspirin not 15g!

Hi OP, I didnt want to read and run.

My experience doesnt exactly align up with yours, but I also had two losses before this current pregnancy (34 weeks) and I will never forget the anguish. Don't lose hope just yet. I think PP has given excellent advice. Aspirin and progesterone were my plan if I had lost another one. I went a bit overkill after two in my grief and went off caffeine totally as I read it had been associated with miscarriage if consumed pre-pregnancy, but my consultant has since told me this was nonsense.

Just to add, my measurements are also way off with this pregnancy despite also knowing my ovulation date etc. I have been reassured that it's not an exact science, and you can ovulate up to a few days after your positive OPK which compounds the issue

Hi I’m so sorry for your losses. I can relate as I have also had 2 miscarriages.
My first pregnancy was a blighted ovum diagnosed at 10 weeks, Sac measuring 6 weeks. This whole experience was devastating for me, I was only 20 and it was first pregnancy. I think the worry of me never being able to carry a child added to my depression. I did end up having 2 consecutive successful pregnancies after that. Then this year I had another pregnancy which ended in miscarriage at 7 weeks, I was once again heartbroken. I’m pregnant again now just 5 weeks and I really don’t know what to expect.

I have problems with spotting in between my periods and always thought I had low progesterone and thought this could have caused the miscarriages. I looked into progesterone and aspirin also so I think this is very good advice. I had my progesterone tested at 7dpo and it was really high so I didn’t end up taking any. Before I had found out I was pregnant last week I was looking into going to see a private consultant about all these issues, the nhs waiting time is so long.

I would have thought as you have conceived naturally, you don’t need to consider ivf at the point.

Stay strong xx

Hi OP. I’ve also had multiple miscarriages. When I conceived my last pregnancy I was living overseas and the ObGYn prescribed me progesterone and baby aspirin. I’ve no idea if/ how these things helped but I had a successful pregnancy.

Baby aspirin you can get over the counter but I don’t think the NHS will prescribed progesterone for this purpose so it may be worth seeking the advice of a private ObGYn?

I am so sorry for your losses Flowers

I had two miscarriages at around 6 weeks, both after having had IVF. I had the recurrent miscarriage tests done and they found I had a defective gene related to blood clotting and recommended I take blood thinners next time round. My third pregnancy then resulted in the birth of my little boy.

I would ask if you can get the recurrent miscarriage tests done. I think whether or not you can get these on the NHS depends on where you live though - we had to pay privately as they will only do them on the NHS round here if you’ve had three miscarriages in a row.

IVF tends to help with conception rather than preventing miscarriage, so hopefully you won’t have to rush straight into that xxx

Hi lovely. I've had consecutive losses all at exactly 12 weeks..

I'm now almost 21 weeks pregnant & it's the furthest I've ever come. I believe it's because of God alongside aspirin, high iron tablets and progesterone that has given me hope to have a baby in my arms soon?

Hang in there!

Phoenix2021 · 29/09/2021 13:39

Hi Op
I'm sorry for your losses

I'm 36, had 2 miscarriages both at 6 weeks within an 8 months time period at 35 and am now pregnant again (19weeks)

I reduced caffeine intake, got access through private clinic to progesterone and hormone testing (I do have normal but on the very bottom of the range progesterone levels) and I took low dose aspirin 81mg from the 2nd miscarriage daily.

I used supplements, I took Proceive Advanced Max (designed for women trying to conceive over age 35) It has been said to help people trying who have fertility problems, it can potentially help improve egg and sperm quality (their is a male version for your partner)
I took high dose ubiquinol (coQ10) and myo inositol. Vitamin D and Omega 3 supplements. You can look around into this things is a lot of information online.
I also used clearblue advanced digital ovulation tests (as you can get the maximum amount of fertile days.

I believe it takes at least 3 months to improve egg quality and sperm quality with supplements which is why I think I went on to have a 2nd miscarriage when I had only been on supplements for a month.

At your age after 6 months ttc you can get blood testing done to see how your ovarian reserve is. I don't think you need to jump to IVF just yet (but its a personal choice) Before ivf I would recommend investigations for recurrent miscarriage as there could problem that would lead to miscarriages even with IVF.

I thought I would have another miscarriage when I conceived a third time but statistics says its only 1% of women go on to have 3 miscarriages or more in a row. Whereas around 5% have 2 miscarriages in a row.

There is hope after two early miscarriages in your late 30s and its much more likely you will have a healthy pregnancy next time than another miscarriage.
The odds are in your favour. But I can understand if you don't currently feel like that.

Cafeaulait27 · 29/09/2021 13:54

I second the myo inositol. I buy mine in a powder from Zita West.

I also have PCOS too though, so originally started taking it to aid conception, but it’s also good to continue through pregnancy.

Babyghirl · 29/09/2021 17:28

@Rebych
Sorry your going through this again I'm also 38 ttc num 1, have had 4 miscarriages and 1 cp it's tough but with your age ask your doc to refer you to the rmc for all the tests to be done 💚

Lottie917 · 29/09/2021 17:57

So sorry for your loses Flowers

I had 2 miscarriages - with the first I started spotting at 6 weeks, had a scan and was measuring smaller than should have been but there was still a heartbeat, and then around 8 weeks I miscarried. The second I got to 11 weeks, started spotting and scan showed that baby didn't have a heartbeat and had stopped growing around 9 weeks.

I for sure thought I'd have a third miscarriage but felt like it was a hoop I had to jump through for investigations to begin. My third pregnancy was fine, I didn't do anything differently or take any meds and I currently have an 8 month old DS.

IVF would be more for help with conception (so I'm led to believe), as you are able to get pregnant you may wish to instead look into having tests run to check for any reason why this is happening.

It's rubbish we have to go through this three times to receive help on the NHS. If you're financially able to, you have the option to get these done privately before trying again for a baby.

Wishing you all the luck and please remember to take care of you through this Flowers xx

Thank you so much for all your responses, I really appreciate you taking time to respond — it has definitely provided some hope! I’ve never heard of taking aspirin in pregnancy before so I will definitely explore this further. And the tests are something I will ask for. I’ve had the test to see if I have high egg reserves which I do but of course my fear is they are not high quality. My thoughts with IVF was that they could check the quality of the embryo so if I’m having issues with that side of things it will give me a better chance. I’ll guess I’ll see what the test results show first though. And there is lots of other helpful advice here that I will consider too. Thanks again xx

I am so sorry for your losses OP and for all the pain you're going through. Flowers

LauraLillyPad · 10/12/2021 16:51

I think what helped you was progesterone to keep baby in . I was taking aspirin for months and gone through mc . Waiting for progesterone and start again and hopefully this time I will have full term pregnancy 🤰🏻
