Extreme taste change

Hi all,
I'm currently 34 weeks pregnant and just wondering if anyone else experienced or is experiencing similar.

So basically around the time I found out I was pregnant everything just started tasting different. I now hate most foods and nothing tastes the same as it used to. There are a few foods I can stomach some but they still don't taste nice.

In the beginning I was hoping it was just strong hormones and that it would go back to normal later in the pregnancy but so far it has not gotten any better.

Has anyone else experiences this extreme taste change and if so did it ever go back to normal?
I'm really missing a lot of foods and still losing a lot of weight.

Have you done a covid test?

Hi @amieeb I developed aversions to a lot of food I used to like, in my first trimester. I'm mostly back to normal now, at 27 weeks, but I still can't stand the aftertaste of some things, mostly dairy products now I think about it. I am naturally drawn to bitter foods and drinks (I like green vegetables, tonic water, etc) which I couldn't stand in my first trimester, but I'm back on them now. Years ago I suffered with IBS, but haven't for quite a while. Pregnancy seems to have made me a bit sensitive again and I get gassy (top and bottom end!) with vegetables and pulses, and get an upset stomach with onions, garlic and chilli. Which is a shame because I like them.
I hope you're back to your usual self soon. It does seem like pregnancy is determined to make us suffer in the most unusual ways!

I loved pepsi before I found out I was pregnant and now can't drink it as it leaves a funny taste in my mouth

@GloomAndDoom yes, I had covid is November last year and then fell pregnant in February and was doing two weekly lateral flow tests at the time for work so I deffo think it's more pregnancy related.

I have just never heard of aversions being this drastic. Literally all smells and tastes are different than they were pre pregnancy. Most being absolutely awful and unrecognisable from before. I have lost 2 and a half stone throughout this pregnancy purely from the fact that I can only eat a very select few foods like potatoes, carrots, peas and cheese. Currently 34 weeks and still losing rather than having gained anything.

I'm 16 weeks pregnant and my tastes have changed completely! So bizarre. Nothing tastes like it used to do (apart from potatoes!) and there are many things I can't stomach, which I used to love, including cake, chocolate, salad leaves.

Having said that, although I initially lost weight, your weight loss sounds quite a lot, and I would get this checked out with your GP and/or midwife, just to make sure there's no treatment you need.

I had this in my pregnancy, severe nausea and major food adversions! Things got better as the pregnancy went on and as soon as I had the baby my taste was back to normal! I enjoy everything again!

Annie1290 · 30/09/2021 00:07

Yes absolutely. I had hyperemesis in my first pregnancy. Didn't realise how badly it had changed my tastes until I gave birth and the next morning everything miraculously tasted wonderful again!

I am currently 32 weeks pregnant and again things taste odd after months of hyperemesis. Roll on this baby being born and things tasting normal again!

Ugh..I'm only 16+ weeks and had the horrible rotten taste since the start... not giving me much hope here that it will go away 🤣 everything tastes off
