Starting to panic baby size….

😭😭😭.
I have had 3 babies (all on due date ranging from 7lb 7-8lb (girls both 7lb boy a bit bigger).

This one has measured big the whole way through (including scans). She is on the 90th percentile so offered no tests.
Due date she was estimated to be 9lb 7!
For the first time I have gone over, I’m a week over due so not she is into the 10lb!
I get you won’t grow a baby bigger than you can handle, but I don’t believe this baby is the right size for me as I have had 3 or similar weights and all made a appearance on due date!
Where this one just isn’t budging. 🤷🏼‍♀️😭

Eek, they're just making a best guess.

My friend had "10lb" babies that were around 7.5 when they popped out!

cherrytreecottage · 28/09/2021 08:37

I've had 3 friends and family members who have had babies recently and were told an estimated weight - all were far lower than expected when born!

MyOtherProfile · 28/09/2021 08:37

I've never yet known anyone's baby actually be the size predicted at scans. So many people have come away saying their baby is measuring really large or really small, they've got really worried and then baby has come out a perfectly normal size.

I really wouldn't worry about it.

kitkatsky · 28/09/2021 08:37

I had a baby in Feb. Growth scans estimated her around 8.5lbs. She was 5lbs 13 born

Bennetgirl · 28/09/2021 08:38

Have they not offered you an induction now you're 41 weeks?

Mine is going to be huge but looking like a c section due to being breech and a bit of extra placenta! I'd rather still try for a natural delivery though. If I went to 42 weeks I'd be looking at over 11.5lbs 😩 I said before the other issues that I don't want to go that late and my midwife supported that.

Remember scans are not always accurate. I'd definitely ask if you can have an induction now as your worried about the size.

I'd be really interested to find out if they got your babies weight right. I'm really hoping they've got mine wrong! x

PutOnAHappyFace · 28/09/2021 08:41

Just to echo the other posters. They are just estimates and very often they are wrong. There is so many factors that leads to the measurements being off. I had many growth scans with DD and when she was born I plotted her weight on the graph and it was way off.

Good luck with Labour, hope it goes as smooth as possible for you.

FourForFore4 · 28/09/2021 08:43

My three girls were smaller babies 6lbs 13oz, 7lbs & 7lbs 2oz. The second was 10 days late. My first measured big on scans, but was fine. Just had a boy in June, he was 8lb 11oz. I was in shock! The birth was fine, but I had loads of teeny baby clothes from his sisters that he never wore.
You'll be fine. Just pack a variety of clothes sizes for hospital as the estimates are often way off.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 28/09/2021 08:59

My baby's weight was apparently over 9lb - she was 7 when she was born...

dottydally · 28/09/2021 09:06

As everyone else has said, they are just estimates. With that said, if you are concerned about having a big baby I just wanted to say that I have now had two big babies (one was 9 lb 2 oz and the second was 10 lb 8 oz). Neither was identified as a 'big baby' during pregnancy. I had two quick/easy deliveries, both of which started spontaneously and did not require any pain relief. Big does not always mean problems!

gg96cgp · 28/09/2021 09:22

Echoing other posters. My second was measuring 'big' and so had scans which confirmed he was in excess of 10lbs. When he was born he was smaller than his sister and weighed 8 lb 12oz so I genuinely wouldn't worry. These estimates are more like guesses!

HungryHippo11 · 28/09/2021 09:26

10lb doesn't sound like a very very high birthweight to me, I know plenty of people with babies weighing 10lb or more.
If its 90th centile then 10% of babies are that weight or larger, so hardly extraordinary. You'll be fine OP.

thirstyformore · 28/09/2021 09:28

What @dottydally said! I measured "normal" throughout my second pregnancy (although I could tell he was going to be on the big side as he felt heavier).

Perfectly normal birth, no pain relief (not through choice!!), felt not much different to my first birth. He was 10lb 2. My daughter was 8lb 3! Quite a difference in weight....

Try not to worry. The baby will come out Smile

Coffeeanddarkchoc · 28/09/2021 09:29

DS1 was 9lb 6oz and a difficult labour.
DS2 was almost 11lb and was a much easier labour and delivery.

fallhappy1 · 28/09/2021 09:42

Ds2 measured big, and was on the 90th centile and midwife belived he'd be bigger than Ds1 who was 7lbs 13oz and he'd spent the entire pregnancyon the 50th centile. Ds2 was born and he actually weighed 2oz less then ds1! I wouldn't worry too much.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 28/09/2021 09:46

yes its only a estimate, my DS was born at 41+4, they'd estimated him to be 10lb t 40 weeks, and he was 10lb 11. yes its big, but managable.

I'm currently almost 27 weeks with #2 so we'll see what happens this time!

Tinydancer321 · 28/09/2021 16:06

@HungryHippo11 ha ha, 10lb was at 40 weeks!
I have a induction date not at 41+6 so by then more 11lb. Considering me biggest was 8lb
And on due date seems crazy.

Thank you everyone fx!

Estimates can be out by up to 25%. So many say they were told they'd have big or small babies then had a more average sized baby at birth.

Our newborn was estimated at 7lb 12oz at 35+6, she was born 38+6 weighing 10lb 15oz. Fairly accurate for me. Our others were shown to be big on scans too but they didn't predict birth weights for any of them.

LauEli · 28/09/2021 17:36

I had a growth scan on Friday at 39+1 baby was 8lb15 according to scan. Sonographer said take with a pinch of salt. I'm being induced tomorrow which I'll be 39+6 so we shall see just how accurate scan was 😂

Tinydancer321 · 28/09/2021 17:46

@LauEli good luck for tomorrow please tell me
How you get on!

@Chelyanne wow! How was the birth. Well done to you. Did you feel she was big?

OP posts:
Chelyanne · 28/09/2021 17:55

@Tinydancer321 I could feel she was a big girl, she followed twins so I've been bigger. I had her via cesarean after over 20hrs labour, started to get scar rupture, lost 1.6ltrs of blood in surgery and a more after too so was very unwell. I was planning an elcs at 39wk but went in to labour a day early, would have gone vb if not for the scar. I had our son via unassisted vb and he was 10lb 12oz, only 14mins pushing so not as bad as I feared it would be.

marykitty · 28/09/2021 18:07

My DS1 was supposed to be very small and 6 lb
My best friend DD was supposed to be huge and 11 lb

Guess what,
My DS was a bit more than 7 lb
My best friend DD was 1 oz less than my DS Grin

Yummymummy2020 · 28/09/2021 18:09

I was told my baby was small after my previous one was 7lbs and ended up birthing nearly a 10lb one😂 but it was a much easier birth, not to over share but she just came out with very little pushing, the midwife said her weight and gravity stood to me😂 just in case you have a fear that it will be a worse birth as I just knew they were wrong and I was having a big baby so I was terrified.

CazM2012 · 28/09/2021 18:12

I was estimated a large baby for DC1 over 11lb the hospital really scared me with it all at scans, she was 9lb 3oz a little chunky but not huge just very long, slightly bigger head and the measurements they take made her seem huge! She’s now almost 10 and very tall. DC4 was estimated tiny, small, possibly need assistance, she was 6lb 11oz very dainty and she’s still petite now. The scans aren’t always accurate.
