Hello all

I literally just found out that I am pregnant on Tuesday. My husband and I still trying to absorb the news. We are happy but very shocked - we thought it would take around six months at least (we used to smoke and drink) but I have fallen pregnant more or less immediately after deciding to stop using protection. I think I'm about 4 weeks.

I'm 34, live in London, and have been married since March.

I know NOTHING about babies and children, never having been the maternal type. I'm not even sure what to do next! Sensibly I have purchased a book and made an appointment at the doctor's. Husband is already fretting about what can go wrong and that we aren't going to be able to afford it.

I'm really up and down right now, one moment really excited, the next depressed that my life as I knew it (great job, excellent social life etc.) is over. I hope that doesn't sound awful.....

Hi SKF

Welcome to mumsnet and congratulations

Don't worry, none of us know anything about babies either

Seriously, you'll get the hang of this motherhood lark, it has its own perks, don't worry about the loss of your old life, the new one will be just as good.

Hi SKF - me too! Lots of similarities - I'm a Londoner in my thirties, got married in the Spring; just started trying, amazed it's happened so quickly, husband now panicking... I must be about five weeks. Good to hear from someone in the same boat!

tyaca · 07/12/2007 18:01

welcome and congrats

be warned - one of the unspoken side affects of pregnancy is a compulsive addiction to musmnet.

you have been warned....

TenLordsaLapin · 07/12/2007 18:14

Congratulations! and welcome to MN. Prepare to become addicted

Baby number 1 = making it up as you go along. And in 8 months time, you and your DH (dear husband) will bring home a tiny bundle in a car seat, put it down the living room, look at each other and say "what the f*&^ do we do now!!!" I guarantee it.

But we are here for questions, there's millions of years motherhood experiences between us!

Big Congrats SKF, I also found MN when I was only a few weeks pg with my DD who is now 17 days old.
Mn is a wonderful place to get help, advice on all things not just pregnancy and children.

Hope all goes well for you

Indith · 07/12/2007 18:38

Congratulations!

This place has taght me most of what I know about small folk since I found it when pg with ds.

Don't worry about your social life, you'll just find you end up having more coffee and cake than wine. Pretty good trade I think

SKF · 07/12/2007 18:41

Thanks for all the kind messages - at least I now know what 'dd' and 'ds' and so on mean Although some of these threads are VERY frightening to read.

Really looking forward to hearing about the experiences of other newly PG ladies too.

xx

DO NOT READ the birth stories. Do NOT. You will freak yourself out.

Make sure you find your ante-natal club thread - I think this is you? - I wasn't here when I was pregnant, but was on an antenatal thread on a different site and it was really helpful, loads of women going through all the same things at the same time. So you come on and post "OH MY GOD, XYZ has happened!" and 50 other women say "oh yes, me too, don't worry". It's great!
