Pregnant after referral for recurrent miscarriages

I'm currently around 6+5.
I've had 4 previous miscarriages and was referred to recurrent miscarriage via Tommies, had all the blood tests and scans etc and they found no indicators as to why I've miscarried. My current pregnancy was an accident, we were waiting until we've saved up to move house before we tried again but I'm of course over the moon about it albeit terrified.

I've got a scan booked for when I'll be almost 9 weeks and I'm just expecting the worst because it's all I've ever experienced at scans.

Is anyone else pregnant after being referred for recurrent miscarriages? How are you feeling?
Also wondering if there's anyone further along and if so how often were you offered scans? I was told it'd be every few weeks especially in the first trimester.

Hi @robyna I’m in almost exactly the same position as you. Currently 6 weeks pregnant after three miscarriages in the past 20 months. I’ve only ever heard a heartbeat once, and that pregnancy stopped developing at 8w4d.

I’ve got a scan at the EPU tomorrow and have let the recurrent miscarriage clinic know I’m pregnant so if tomorrow shows a viable pregnancy then I’m hoping I'll get some follow up care from them.

I’m fully expecting to go in tomorrow to be told they can only see a sac and no embryo, though. I haven't really had any symptoms so it's hard to be optimistic! How are you feeling okay physically?

@itssquidstella congratulations! I know it's difficult to be excited though. If it helps, I had the worst symptoms in my last pregnancy which ended as a MMC and had mild symptoms in another that ended as a blighted so I don't think symptoms are any indication.
I'm feeling quite sick and had the usual cramps. Also feeling very tired but nothing too intense yet.
I'm thinking I'm gonna wait til my scan next week before even considering telling my GP, but I'm also not sure whether I'd go through the consultants at the clinic for my booking appointment and 12 week scan if all is ok?

In a very similar position to you. I'm 6+4 after 3 losses in the last 18 months. I was due my first appointment at the recurrent miscarriage clinic next month then found out I was pregnant. I contacted the consultant there and although we have no idea for the cause of the losses as didn't get to our first lots of tests she prescribed me progesterone, high dose folic acid and advised to take aspirin from 7 weeks. She sorted me early scans too.

I had my second scan at EPU on Wednesday and was dated at 6 weeks and we saw a heartbeat. Just waiting to hear back whether they want to scan me again. I dared to sort my booking appointment with the midwife this week.

If you're under them I'd definitely let your recurrent miscarriage clinic know. It might not make a different to me but it's definitely alleviated some anxiety by knowing I'm on someone's radar if that makes sense!

I was in your position a year and a bit ago. The result is now 8 months old. My recurrent miscarriage appointment was cancelled due to the pandemic and we were wondering what to do when I found out I was pregnant again.

That time I religiously took 150 mg aspirin every evening before bed. I'll never know if that was what made the difference or if it was just luck but it was the only thing I did differently to the previous times. I believe even if you have tested negative for the blood clotting issues, it can be something that only affects people during pregnancy so wouldn't be found during recurrent miscarriage tests.

I had a scan at 9 weeks but no extra ones after that. I spoke to a consultant over the phone when I was about 20 weeks because I was taking the aspirin and I had told the midwife about it. He said I could have had progesterone prescribed by the gp so it might be worth enquiring about that if you aren't on it already.

Also - congratulations and sending you all the positive vibes Flowers. Recurrant miscarriage does make it terrifying to be pregnant but I wanted to put a good story out there that it can go right. It made me feel better to remember that even after 3+ miscarriages, the chance of the next pregnancy continuing are more than 50%. so the odds are still in your favour. When you've suffered so much it can feel like the chance of a successful pregnancy is tiny.

Thanks guys! I've contacted the recurrent miscarriage clinic when I was about 5 weeks and that's where I'm booked in for my scan next week. I didn't know whether they'd sort out my booking appointment and 12 week scan or whether I'd be offered another scan at 10 weeks too etc. Last time I was pregnant was before I was referred so I went through my GP and had my booking appointment come through from their referral. This time I'm under recurrent miscarriage support so I guess I'll just ask them at my scan what to do next.

I was also put on progesterone for my previous pregnancy that ended in a CP so I've not had it this time as my progesterone levels were fine last time. I think at my appointment next week I'll ask about folic acid and extra vitamin D as my levels are a bit low for vitD

I’ve been there.

I phoned the lovely woman at the RMC and she got me anti-coagulant injections, high dose folic and possibly progesterone (though I’d come out of an IVF miscarriage not long before and this might have come from begging the IVF clinic, it’s all a bit hazy now)

I spent lots of time at the EPU in early pregnancy as I had a cervical issue and lovely woman would pop up (same building) and check I was okay.

I learned to massively advocate for myself and my unborn baby. Don’t wait for the NHS to suggest stuff at their pace. Get on the phone and request whatever you need to as many people as will listen to you.

I don’t know which of the potions worked or I just had a miracle that one time, but said miracle is 18mo and snoring next to me rn (and I never thought I’d be one of the smug bints saying that, despite reading them for years. Never ever.)

I was utterly terrified for most of the pregnancy, just to be fully honest, especially as I had repeated bleeding. It got slightly better the further I got, but the fear never fully leaves you. I think the first thing I said as he was born was to repeatedly ask if they were sure he was real.

I wish you all the very best.

Hi lovely. I had recurrent miscarriages and NO factors or underlying health conditions that could've caused the losses I endured.

But being under clinic meant that despite the ongoing anxiety, I'm the furthest in my current pregnancy that I've ever been & having regular scans with supervised medications.

So be rest assured you're in careful hands 💕

robyna · 26/09/2021 20:16

Thank you @LividLaVidaLoca and @haidri

They've been so supportive so far, they've booked me in for the soonest slot they could where I'd actually be able to see something if it's viable, it's just the waiting around I hate. Every twinge I feel I convince myself I'm having an ectopic or that somethings wrong. I know the chances of another miscarriage are still pretty low but it's difficult when it's all you know!
