Too much sugar pregnancy

I'm 31 weeks pregnant and I've tried to be healthy but feel like a failure. All I've wanted is sugar. Cakes and fat coke. My MW said one coke a day was ok but some days I've maybe had 2 cans. I'm on my feet a lot still with work and feel so exhausted but I'm worried I've done irreversible damage to the baby (I suffer with anxiety so cannot stop thinking about it). Has anyone else had similar cravings?

Coke is more to do with caffeine rather than sugar.
No you haven't damaged your baby with what you've been eating

Rtmhwales · 25/09/2021 04:56

You'll be fine. I suffered with HG and the only thing I could keep down intermittently was Coke and Gatorade. So much sugar, and absolutely no nutrients. Baby was fine.

Gorl · 25/09/2021 05:30

You’ll both be fine. Babies take the nutrients they need from your body. Don’t worry about it Flowers

Cafeaulait27 · 25/09/2021 06:03

I feel like this too. Been craving anything sweet throughout - cereal, biscuits, chocolate bars 😔 I feel bad but also just can’t stop, I think my body must need the energy.

I think possibly it’s only a problem really if you have GD? But interested to hear others opinions x

I've craved sugary stuff non stop too. I've eaten so many cakes and biscuits it's ridiculous. Sometimes whole packets of them. I have the same worries about damaging the baby, but I just can't seem to find the will power to stop.

TashieWoo · 25/09/2021 08:20

Weirdly I’ve gone the other way, pre pregnancy I had a very sweet tooth but I’ve gone right off cake / chocolate etc. I hope this lasts through the 2nd & 3rd trimesters as I’m worried about putting on too much weight.

I think that baby will be fine, as PP have said they take all the nutrients from you, and as long as you take your vitamins, you will have all the nutrients they need. I think it’s just about getting through the first trimester as it’s HARD!

Mommabear20 · 25/09/2021 08:27

I drank about 3 cans a day of full coke in the last trimester with DD as I couldn't stand anything else suddenly, she's now a very happy and healthy 1 year old!

ToadstoolBubbleMaker · 25/09/2021 08:31

I've had a very, very sweet tooth with this pregnancy too. Ice cream, sweets, biscuits, cakes, full fat drinks and not a whole lot else. You will want to keep an eye on your caffeine intake but the sugary stuff itself won't harm the baby.

The theory is if you're carrying a girl you crave sugary things and if you're carrying a boy you crave savoury/salty things. No idea if it's true but it has been correct in both of my pregnancies so far!

For my IVF treatment I always go completely sugar free just in case this helps with egg quality (I think it's nonsense but I'll try anything). Because I got pregnant this round I stayed completely off sugar until 12 weeks and now try to limit what I have. All I can think of is sugar. I'm going crazy. I genuinely cried a couple of days ago because I wanted sweets. I discussed it with the midwife and she said it was really fine to have sugar now and then but don't go overboard. Sadly I don't live or work near to shops and my partner does the shopping so I don't have the opportunity to get stuff. It's horrible! My theory is that if you limit or feel bad about sugar you want it even more.

ToadstoolBubbleMaker · 25/09/2021 09:58

Matilda don't do this to yourself! I've had 2 IVF pregnancies and it is important (as in all pregnancies) to be kind and gentle to yourself and listen to what your body wants. Cravings are your body telling you what to eat (within reason). What you eat or don't eat should not be making you tearful - food is one of the few pleasures during pregnancy, when you are able to stomach it.

And you can't get to the shops at all for a mars bar or whatever? That's not a healthy situation to be in and when the baby arrives you'll need to be able to access shopping for those days you've run out of milk or just fancy a kit kat or whatever. I'd rectify that asap.

I know @ToadstoolBubbelMaker it's a terrible shitty situation. Due to stupid circumstances we ended up without driving licences in the middle of nowhere. As soon as we found out our ivf worked (against all expectations as it took 7 years, 4 rounds and multiple early losses) my partner has been looking to get his license but there are ridiculously long waiting lists for the exams due to corona. In the weekend we travel to the nearest city and 'indulge' but I have been ill and spent the last 3 weekends in bed. My dad is nearby and will always help if we need essential shopping but he's a very grumpy man so I will only ask if I have no other choice. We want to move as soon as possible. In a way my sugar cravings are the least of my troubles. I do have really healthy gums for the first time in my life- so there is a (tiny) plus. X

Thank you all for your replies its definitely helped.make me feel better! Luckily I haven't been diagnosed with GD and I am watching caffeine (I don't drink coffee and have decaf tea)

@ToadstoolBubbleMaker I am an exception to this then as I'm having a boy!

OP, I understand being worried but there is truly no reason. A little bit of extra sugar or caffeine is not that harmful. Of course, if you can drink a bit less yeah that's cool, but you certainly didn't damage your baby :)

Cafeaulait27 · 26/09/2021 17:02

I’m also having a boy and craving all the sweet things!
