Hospital bag and maternity pad/disposable underwear?!

Hi all

I'm 30 weeks tomorrow so have started giving some thought to my hospital bag. What maternity pads would you recommend from experience? Or would you recommend using disposable maternity pants?!

Help! Grin

Take both and plenty of them! I used tesco and boots pads. I had my waters broken in the hospital and it just kept flooding out of me so went through so many pads and pants. Eventually they got me what looked like the puppy training pads to put underneath me Grin.

The best pads are the nhs ones in hospital if you can get any of those while you’re in. Buy the biggest, fattest ones you can. You’ll appreciate the cushioning.

I really liked the lilets maternity pads as they had wings! If you think epidural is a possibility remember to pack a nightie (as you will have a catheter). My labour room and ward was hotter than the sun btw so think light loose layers!

just had my baby last week so very fresh in my mind!

when my water went no pad was going to contain it... as per pp .. the hospital have these mats the put under you that are a lot easier. immediately after baby, again, hospital provided some really big pads that I used for prob first 12 hrs... without knickers.
After that... boots mat pads have been fine. its not so much the absorbancy it's the cushioning.

in short.. a couple of packs of boots/supermarket own maternity pads will see you through hospital (though were also readily available there) and a couple more packs at home .

Good luck!

My waters broke early and i went through a whole packet of maternity pads before I'd even finished being seen in triage 🙈 So take loads! I used the boots own brand thickest ones and they were fine. I also bought boots bed mats for our mattress and the sofa for the first couple of days, but i had a five day stay in hospital so didnt use them in the end. I couldnt find any disposable maternity pants that were comfy so i bought a pack of 5 full brief black m&s knickers in two sizes bigger than my normal size and just threw away any that got wrecked. The rest are packed away in case of future use!

@Chica1990 That's good to hear because those are the ones I got! I was disappointed when I opened them thought because they weren't as thick as I was expecting?

Charlotte2020 · 24/09/2021 09:20

I'd use Cottons maternity pads- the only ones I've found with wings. And massive M&S black pants- pack of 5 was about £10 I think. Good luck!

I got these disposable underwear:

I think I got some from Tesco (and the hospital) too, but the Amazon ones are better.
I hated the hospital pads, the Lilet ones with wings are far better. I put witch hazel on some and put them in the freezer to help with swelling for the first couple of weeks too.
I bought some adult nappies too but I didn’t bleed enough to justify using them.

I had my waters broken in hospital so they had the puppy pad thing under me. They gave me more to take home too.

Boots own brand thick ones are lush as so padded and comfy. You'll need far more than uou think and then likely bleed for about 6weeks after although can change down from the thick ones after a while. I used the thick hospital ones and the boots ones for first couple weeks and then moved onto reusable pads as felt bad for plastic waste

Ameteurmum · 24/09/2021 10:31

Massive plain black pants from primark that you can bin when you are done! I bought some thick pads from boots and or a supermarket I think and then I had different pads for home - some night type ones and long ones for the days. I didn’t need actual maternity pads after about day 2 or 3

Dollywilde · 24/09/2021 10:49

Yep, I got a multipack of massive M&S black pants and just chucked them when they'd been used. Also used my own maternity pads, I had the Boots ones. Hospital provided some but my ones were much more comfy!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 24/09/2021 10:51

Primark massive black pants. Chuck when done.

MeadowHay · 24/09/2021 12:31

The massive Lil-Lets ones with wings are the best for the heavy bleeding post-birth I think. I tried a few different types with my first and these were the comfiest and never leaked even though I had moderate blood loss as I had an instrumental delivery with episiotomy. I wore them with disposable undies for the first few days, think they were from Tesco or something.

needsomesleeppls · 24/09/2021 12:35

I used packets and packets of pads. Doubled up and changed every 2 hours in the first few days. I'd get LOTS.

MeganKnight · 24/09/2021 20:22

I ordered a hospital bag from a Midwife company. It was a god send! It literally had everything we needed for both myself and baby! precious-delivery.com/product-category/bags/luxury-prefilled-maternity-bags/

HungryHippo11 · 24/09/2021 20:32

I used tena lady pants
So much more comfortable than disposable knickers, and offer all round protection so you don't have to worry about lying down and the pad not covering everything.
Not very environmentally friendly but I only wore them for bout 3 days and then it eased off a lot and I could go for my usual period pants/pads.

SparkyBlue · 24/09/2021 20:49

On DC3 my waters broke at 33 weeks but I didn't go into labour until 12 hours later so I was in hospital and I couldn't believe how much was coming out of me. I went through a couple of packs of pads that day alone and ended up binning two or three pairs of primark knickers as well. So my advice is rather be looking at extra products than be stuck looking for them.

SillyBry · 24/09/2021 21:34

Definitely get the big thick maternity pads for the first week. I loved the natracare ones as they have no plastic in so aren’t sweaty. I found the lilets ones really sweaty. Boots organic ones were good too.
Use hospital ones whilst there to save yours. I lost a pint of blood during labour and the room looked a bit like a murder scene… so I would say buy plenty just in case! Every time I stood up, I lost quite a lot so went through plenty on day 1!!

LaMadrilena · 24/09/2021 21:46

I found maternity pads really uncomfortable and used normal maxi pads as soon as I was home. The maternity ones I found really pressed on my stitches (grade 2 tear, nothing serious). But I imagine it depends on your bleeding. I used 1 out of the (expensive, Chicco...) pack I bought.

I also bought massive black pants from Primark and chucked them.

Colinthecaterpillar35 · 26/09/2021 08:11

Thanks everyone for your advice and recommendations! I bought the big pants yesterday so now just to get the pads! x
