Stopping progesterone & aspirin

Hi

I have had some medical advice on this today, but I just wanted to ask other’s opinions too, who might have gone through this

I am currently 11 weeks pregnant, after 4 consecutive miscarriages. The thing that I feel that has helped me in this pregnancy, is taking aspirin & (progesterone pessaries)

I have my 12 week scan next week and I’ve been told that’s as long as all is well, I can stop taking both medications after the scan. But I’m so scared to stop, in case it causes a miscarriage. I know in real life if I do miscarry it will be hard to tell if it was just bad luck, or because I did stop.

Just wondered if anyone has been through the same?

Thank you x

After over 2 years of trying to get pregnant, it finally happened the second month I started my progesterone pessaries. Safe to say I was terrified of coming off them since it felt like the extra progesterone was the only thing that had made the pregnancy possible. So the midwife suggested I stop them gradually. I was taking two a day, one in the morning, one at night so I started after 12 weeks cutting it down to one a day for two weeks, then one every other day for two weeks then finally stopped completely by 16 weeks. I understand the fear but there was nothing to worry about and I'm now 27 weeks. Good luck x

Thanks @burtle4 I am going to speak to the hospital again next week at my 12 week scan, but that’s a good idea of reducing them. I do 1 x 400mg a day, so might try taking one every other day, and maybe the same with my aspirin
That’s amazing you are now 27 weeks! Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy xx

Hi OP,
I'm in the same boat but a bit further along then you.
Progesterone is there to support baby until the placenta takes over, which happens around week 10-14. After that progesterone doesn't really do much, but I still want to keep taking it as it also doesn't do any harm.
Aspirin is different, that's to prevent the million types of blood clotting disorders there seems to be that go completely undetected in our everyday lives. I wouldn't stop taking this until you get to 36-38 weeks. As a small dose a day again won't do you or baby any harm but it can make all the difference in the outcome of your pregnancy.
Always speak to your midwife or doctor though just to again make sure there's no reason for you not to be able to take these for longer.
Best of luck xxx

This. Progesterone naturally depletes in the body after 12 weeks because the placenta takes over so it isn't needed. If you continue taking them it will have no positive effect on your pregnancy nor reduce the risk of a miscarriage. Aspirin is different though, it can be useful to continue taking. I would check this one out again with the doctor. I was in a similar position, 3 miscarriages so took both aspirin and pessaries. Stopped taking the pessaries at 12 weeks but took the aspirin right the way through. My baby is ten weeks old now! X

@ThinkingOfPineapples thank you for your reply and advice ❤️ Aspirin is so cheap anyway & I think I should get my prescription exemption form soon, so I might ask for some more progesterone anyway, in case I panic and want it! It’s good to know it won’t cause any harm taking it longer
Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy x
