Which brand of nappies to buy?

Now I'm entering my last trimester, I'm trying to get a list sorted for things that I need for the baby. If I don't sort it now, I'll end up procrastinating and it'll never get done!

I know that I'll need an insane amount of nappies, but heard some brands cause nappy rash or aren't as good as others. Also- they are so expensive!

Can anyone recommend a brand that doesn't cost the earth, but would be suitable for a newborn.

I live in quite a remote area, so the only supermarkets that I have access to is Tesco or co-op, but buying online is always an option.

Thanks all!

We found through trial and error thay different brands fit different kids at different stages, so we've literally spanned asda, tesco, sainsburys, morrisons, lidl and pampers nappies! (but vast majority were the supermarket ones, we only trialled pampers while they were on a really good deal at Costco. For what it's worth, while they did feel nice and soft so do most of the supermarket ones that are half the price and neither our DS or DD have ever had nappy rash in the 4 combined years we've used them!)

Aldi have been the best for us!

And I got some reusable also bambino mio- find them pretty good also

We love Aldi's and Tescos. So affordable and work well. When you start getting leaks, you need to change size.

Starlight39 · 22/09/2021 19:32

I think it can depend on the shape of the baby! For DD they've all done a reasonable job but I like the aldi ones best. We use the normal for daytimes and the premium for nights.

Anon9990 · 22/09/2021 19:32

Aldi for the smaller sizes and when you go into size 3 we’ve preferred Tesco or Morrison’s as less leakage for us x

Newborns are fine, they wake so frequently that they don't have a chance to get wee-soaked. They might have the occasional poonami, but that happens to us all regardless of brand.

It becomes important around 4-5 months when they can (theoretically) go all night without a change. If you get an amazing sleeper, this is the point at which you'll need to consider which brand works best.

We used pampers during the night and Aldi during the day. Pampers were a bit better because they're more soft for newborn baby skin. We used pampers for a few weeks before we did the day and night switch.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 22/09/2021 19:38

Aldi have been fantastic- used pampers witch my first and wasted so much money unnecessarily

Tibtab · 22/09/2021 19:40

We’ve tried loads, it depends on the shape of the baby! We use Tesco now and don’t have many problems, we get the occasional leak but nothing major (and we got leaks when we tried Pampers too). My DD has skinny thighs so they don’t always fit as closely.

Fred and Flo Tesco nappies

Twizbe · 22/09/2021 19:45

Supermarket nappies are great. Get a pack of Tesco ones and go from there.

Don't get more than - pack of size 1 or 0 though. They grow fast and both mine were in size 2 by 2 weeks old.

Pretendingtosmile · 22/09/2021 19:49

Sainsbury's leaked at size 1-3 for us but then much later size 4+ was as good as pampers and so much cheaper. Also Aldi is giving away a newborn pack atm (on the netmums email!) We have used lupilu (Lidl) and pretty happy with those.

RoseMartha · 22/09/2021 19:58

I used to buy Morrisons or Sainsburys own make for the day and Pampers or Huggies for nights.

Nowadays I would probably choose reusable for days and branded disposable for nights.

VegMam · 22/09/2021 20:14

Cloth nappies could be a good option, cheaper long term and you don’t need to worry about running out in the same way as disposable (plus better for the planet).

Spyro1234 · 22/09/2021 20:15

Cloth nappies, they are WONDERFUL !!! Eg Baba and boo

Fairywings86 · 22/09/2021 20:16

We used pampers for newborn nappies which were good and lovely and soft, but mainly because we got bought a good few packs from family before DS2 from born (bless them, very thankful), but I've got to say aldi's are by far the best for us hands down, no leaks, super soft and comfy, high recommended, we've used size 1,2,3,4 and are now on 4+, will carry on with them till little fellas out of them x

It depends how big OP's baby is when born. My twins were small and we've only just stopped using size 1 nappies at 18 weeks old. Lidl, Asda, Boots, and Aldi all have decent nappies. I don't think Pampers are worth the price.
Mommabear20 · 22/09/2021 20:24

Tesco all the way! In our daughters first year, we only had 2 instances of leakage, 1 was a massive blow out poop after she'd not gone for 3 days, and the other was after we got stuck in traffic for 2 hours and the little madam was downing water like it was going out of fashion! 🤦‍♀️

PolytheneRam · 22/09/2021 20:27

Aldi for us.

LakeShoreD · 22/09/2021 20:34

Always Pampers overnight but the generic cheapo ones used by nursery don’t seem to cause rashes or anything like that. Some babies are in size 1 for ages but others barely fit them at birth, specific fit of the nappy on your baby is a factor too. My advice would be get Amazon Prime but don’t over buy.

sarah13xx · 22/09/2021 22:38

I started off with pampers the first month (size 1 then moved to size 2). We’ve now moved to the aldi ones. I calculated the pampers ones were costing 11p each and the aldi ones are 3p. I nipped in to buy two huge packs of the aldi ones and it came to a grand total of £4 something 😂 I think I change him more often than most people would but he’s never had a hint of nappy rash. He occasionally leaked up his back with the pampers ones when he was tiny but I think they were just too big. So far very happy with the aldi ones. Have found they’re a bit smaller so he was a size 2 in pampers then moved to size 2 at aldi but they don’t seem as big so now onto size 3. I’d rather pay less and be able to change them more often I think 😊
