Screening test results, mistake??

I'll start of by giving a little background info about myself. So I'm 39 years old and currently 17 weeks pregnant with my second baby. My first will be 3 in November. So I had my 12 week scan a few weeks ago and opted to do the screening test also. So they took all the baby's measurements and took my bloods and last week I received the results. So as I've mentioned I'm 39 years old and will be 40 when baby is due. So with my son I was 36 when I had him and when I received my screening test results for him it came back as high risk like 1/70 or Something like that. Obviously I was upset about it but I kind of knew I would be because of my age (the older you are the more high risk you will be) but thankfully he turned out fine so anyway when I received my screening results last week for this baby I was pretty certain I would be high risk again but maybe even higher as I'm more older and closer to 40. So as I opened up the letter and took a look, to my surprise it was low risk! But not only that but it's like 1/50,000 ?? Ok, so I know there is no way in the world that result is accurate. Not only is it bang on 50,000 but all 3 of the tests done is the same so I know there's got to be some kind of error. I want to call them to confirm but I don't want to be like you lot have got it wrong but I have my midwife appointment this week so I'll talk to her about it then. Sorry for the long post but just wanted to know if anyone has any idea if this could be a mistake or if anyone's ever had wrong results given??
@timewilltel yes that’s been reflexed. It’s an NIPT result, not a combined result. Your combined result would have given you a 1:250 chance or higher - very very very common for someone in the late thirties/forties and nothing to worry about at all. But the pathway is then to perform a NIPT, so that’s what you have had done and why the risk is so small…. The NIPT result is basically binary and comes back as greater than 9:10 or less than 1:50000.

So you’ve had the better, more accurate test and it’s come back as low risk as can be. Congrats!!

Do call the screening midwives there if you want to be talked through the result, they will be really happy to explain everything x
Oooh... interesting to hear about the reflexed result! My letter didn't say this so must have been 1:10,000 from the combined! I don't think they automatically send off to NIPT in Wales?!

Maybe it's lower risk than last time because your baby didn't screen positive / have DS? In any case, I don't think it's a mistake.

I'm over 40 too and there is already too much we're given to worry about IMHO! Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

Reflex is a specific pathway, it’s not approved by NICE/QA and they think there are some ethical problems around not telling women about the combined result. Only four hospitals do it I think.

Yeah... I'd want to know the combined test result too but I am scientist and like to see as much data as possible!

But at the end of the day, the NIPT is the more accurate result and is awesome news for the OP!

@jojojo82 yes that's what I meant when I said all 3 tests, sorry I wasn't more clear but thank you for the positive message! X

@Blxo94 haha thank you! The thing is I wasn't even bragging, I genuinely was worried that they got the results wrong but yeah I have spoken to my midwife about it just to make sure and she did reassure me that it isn't a mistake, it's just a good result BUT that doesn't mean it's 100% certain which I totally understand.

@AndThenInTheEnd thank you so much for the explanation! That was extremely informative! Yes, I saw my midwife last week and she did go through it with me but she also said that this doesn't mean it's 100% so at my 20 week scan they should have a more clearer result. Thanks again! Xx

@CornishGem1975

My results at 40 were far far better than the results I had at 27.

In my experience, they don't give you a bang on number? I think mine have always been rounded up (or down I guess) to a large number, so 5,000, 10,000 etc. That wouldn't concern me.

@CornishGem1975 aww thank you that's really reassuring to know x

@Confused521 I know right? Like pregnancy isn't already an anxious time for us and then we get told on top of that, the older you are the more complications you'll have! Great, thanks for that! But you know what there's plenty of women in their 40s who have had perfectly healthy pregnancies and gone on to have perfectly healthy babies so maybe times are changing for us older mums! X
