Waters breaking before planned section

Hypothetical question for now but I'm convinced my waters will break before I go in for my planned section in a couple of weeks.

What would happen it they did? Is it likely I'd just call triage and they'd go in and do it as an emergency section?

Yes happened to me and it was treated as an emergency so I had to stay in for 2 nights rather than the intended 1 night stay.

I asked my midwife the same question as my elective is in 2 weeks. She said yes to call triage and they'll do it as an emergency, only reason they wouldn't be able to is if baby is already on it way out, but that would be one quick labour 😂 xx

Thank you!

Hopefully baby stays in until my booked in date but I just need to know all eventualities now I'm so close!

Yep if your waters break before your section date call triage and head in. You will be assessed and depending on your reasons for a C be given a level or priority. There can only do so many sections at a time so if someone comes in with risk to life they would be done before you but you would be ahead of planned sections for that day.

My waters have broken at 34 & 35 weeks when had sections booked for 39 weeks. When I went in at 35 weeks they were really busy and I was starting to freak out slightly but they reassess frequently and managed the queue. I later met 2 mums who had their planned sections moved to the following day.

Yes, my hospital said any sign of labour before the C-section date to come to the hospital and they will do it.
They said come 'day or night' but I know they would not be doing the op during the night so thinking that might be for steroid injections if needed for the baby.

Good luck and hope all stays quiet until your planned date ladies!

CarryOnNurse20 · 21/09/2021 20:45

@Arecklessmanor of course they’d do it at night if needed. They will do a c section any time of the day if clinically necessary! Booked ones are obviously planned for the day time.

This happened to me. Was booked to have an elective following a 3rd degree tear with first baby.
However my waters broke at 35 weeks. I phoned the hospital and they said to come in. I got there and they did all the pre op stuff, put cannula in etc. Was waiting to be taken to theatre...and then was told they had an emergency so I had to wait. Contractions then started and baby born naturally about 2 hours later.

Chelyanne · 21/09/2021 21:55

They get you in as an emergency so long as you're not too far gone in labour.

My waters didn't go but I went in to labour the day before my elcs. I was done as a cat3 cesarean. Contractions started about 3am, got to hospital 4pm (I was 3cm) and baby was delivered at 23:38.

Just wanted to say I spent every waking minute worrying about this 🙈 Labour was always my biggest fear on earth (hence the section) but I’m pleased to say I’ve had a baby and I’m yet to experience it 😂 I made it to the date 🎉 I was told just to get in to the hospital asap if I was in early labour and they’d do the section. The only thing that worried me was the way they emphasized early labour as if they wouldn’t do it if I was further on. I didn’t go more than 5 miles from the hospital after about 20 weeks pregnant to be on the safe side 😂 good luck!

Arecklessmanor · 21/09/2021 23:22

@CarryOnNurse20 that is good to hear, the hospital I'm at seems quite small and I thought they wouldn't do my C-section in the middle of the night thinking that labour would be progressing slowly enough to wait until morning but then read @Barwell76 post about the baby being born 2 hours after being prepped for theatre.
This is my first baby so hoping they follow the general rule of not arrivng too early!

I have a midwife appointment next week so will see what she says.
