Steroid Injections

Anyone had steroid injections and had any ill effects/side effects afterwards? I am due some soon and absolutely terrified my consultant didn’t help as she stated they can cause temporary anxiety which is the 1 symptom I wanted to avoid as I am prone to have anxiety attacks. I feel like I want to refuse them but know baby needs them ConfusedSad

I've had them twice, first time I had no side effects, second time I did feel flushed and anxious for a few hours the following day. I also suffer from panic attacks, so it easn't fun, but necessary.

AquaMarie · 21/09/2021 14:33

I haven’t had the first lot yet so praying I won’t have any anxiety effects if you experienced none with your first this makes me feel a little better. Thank you.

Sorry I mean I've had them in two pregnancies, first time I had no side effects after either injection, second time I was flushed and anxious after the first one and just flushed after second one.

AquaMarie · 21/09/2021 15:48

I have never had them so hoping I don’t get the anxiety side of it all. Thank you for explaining.

I had 2x steroid injections a few weeks ago (in the event I might go into preterm labour) and it was not bad. They injected it in the side of my thighs, separate thigh per injection. The injection only takes around 10-20 seconds and you will feel a decent amount of pressure at the site.

Afterwards I was a little sore, but this went away within an hour.

Moominmiss · 21/09/2021 17:29

I had to have 2 steroid injections at 37 weeks ready for early delivery at 37+4.

I’d really worked myself up over them, but honestly I can’t say I noticed any side effects at all. I’d read all sorts, including how painful they are etc, but they didn’t even hurt.

AquaMarie · 21/09/2021 17:55

Thank you so much for your reply really appreciate it. I have them within 24 hours of one another so not together and this is in preparation for delivery at 37 weeks. I googled them which I think was the worst thing I could have done!

I’ve had a few. They have caused me anxiety, insomnia, thrush and sensitivity at the injection site. I’ve also had some where I haven’t been aware of any side effects afterwards.

Ask for them in your thigh rather than buttock.

AquaMarie · 21/09/2021 17:57

Thank you Moominmiss, I appreciate you taking the time to reply and tell me of your experience. I have done exactly what you did and googled/read about them and seen all the bad/negative things wish I hadn’t done that as its worked me up even more hoping I get the same as you.

@AquaMarie I also had mine 24 hours apart. I had them in my upper thigh/bum area and honestly it was nothing.

I am the biggest wimp when it comes to needles etc, and after it was done I was honestly like ‘was that it?’ Lol.

And like I said I didn’t even have a sore thigh/bum. I thought at the very least I’d have a sore area for a day or so. But nope. No side effects whatsoever. I had gestational diabetes and the steroids did raise my sugar levels so I had to adjust my insulin, but I was told that would happen in advance so we had a plan in place to manage it, but it still didn’t make me feel off or any different etc.

Google was the worst thing I could have looked at!

AquaMarie · 21/09/2021 18:21

@Moominmiss yes mine sounds to be exactly the same as what you had. I don’t mind needles I just hate looking or watching it.

Glad you had no side effects I think what the consultant said may have been worse case scenario just to warn me it could happen maybe.

Thanks again you have reassured me a little and hopefully it will calm my worrying anxious mind a bit too.

Doctor Google is the worst I am going to ban myself from using it.

@SunbathingDragon oh no so sorry to hear you suffered from all those how long did it last? That’s my worst fear is having anxiety as a side effect although it is “rare” according to my consultant I know it can happen.

I had x2 at 24 weeks then x2 at 34 weeks when I went into labour. The actual jab wasn't that bad but I had awful insomnia for 2 nights after both. Also weird hot flushes.

AquaMarie · 21/09/2021 18:35

@InpatientGardener Thank you for your reply my sleep pattern is bad enough at the moment anyway so thats a side effect I pray I also don’t get. I did read hot cheeks could potentially be one which I find strange.

It was less than 12 hours (my injections were always 12 hours apart) apart from the thrush but that was easily dealt with. They were honestly ok.

AquaMarie · 21/09/2021 19:01

@SunbathingDragon mine will be 24 hours apart. Did you have anxiety for the whole 12 hours? Dreading if I get this as I honestly don’t think I will cope Sad

OP posts:
InpatientGardener · 21/09/2021 19:01

Yes really hot cheeks! Very weird, never had anything like it before. The insomnia didn't last long so hopefully if you do get that it will be short lived!

AquaMarie · 21/09/2021 19:03

@InpatientGardener that does sound strange would be great if it was winter and then they would come in handy. Thats good to know hopefully I don’t get any side effects 🤞🏼praying that I don’t.
