Toddler, chickenpox and pregnancy

I'm 6 weeks pregnant which is early days and I've had a call from my sons nursery to say he is starting to break out in small red dots on his belly and legs - he is absolutely fine in himself and they are keeping an eye throughout the day to see if it turns to chickenpox.

There was a case of this a few weeks back and I'm just preparing incase it happens to our boy (15 months). I've had chickenpox as a child myself, including my partner. Will I be ok if this is indeed chickenpox?

Thanks Smile

I was exposed to chicken pox in my last pregnancy and was v worried. They did a test at the hospital and it turned out I had it as a child and they said that therefore it wasn’t a problem. Fingers crossed your son is okay, x

Please call your community midwife or GP and ask.

dementedpixie · 21/09/2021 13:07

If you had it as a child you will be likely to be immune so it shouldn't be an issue

thingymaboob · 21/09/2021 13:14

I was exposed in last pregnancy at around 7 weeks but an antibody test showed I'd had it as a child as I suspected so all ok. You're fine if you've had it

babyboybluex · 21/09/2021 13:27

@LaBellina Yes, I have done this prior to posting. It's good to get input from other parents that have been through similar.

Speak to your midwife but I was exposed to it early in my pregnancy. My mum didn’t know if I’d had it or not so my midwife did a blood test and I had antibodies to it (ie had it as a child). And my midwife said there was nothing to worry about.

Just FYI, it could possibly be hand, foot and mouth disease. It’s rife in nurseries at the moment. I know your son has spots on his belly and legs, not feet and hands, but I don’t think it presents in the same way in everyone - my son got spots on his legs, belly and bum, and I got spots on my legs and arms. We only realised what it was when my husband caught it and had the classic presentation of it - ie rash on hands and feet with ulcers in his mouth.

@YouMeandtheSpew Thanks for your comments. Were you ok with hand, foot and mouth?

@babyboybluex

Yes I was fine - I was about 18/19 weeks at the time. Talk it over with your midwife but my midwife was very relaxed about it. I think it’s possible not to catch it, so worth being really attentive to hygiene - washing hands regularly, not kissing your toddler on the mouth, etc.

That's great, I'm glad all was well @YouMeandtheSpew. Thank you so much!

Still no call from nursery so assuming it's not bad (yet). Fingers crossed the spots just go or we get to the deeper root as this week goes on x
