Terrified of inserting Cyclogest pessaries

Just as the title says really. I had a MC in 2019 at 5.5 weeks and a MMC this February. Went for my routine 13 week scan to be told my twins had stopped growing at 10 weeks.
I've had all the tests and there is no reason why they happened but my consultant said that next time I got pregnant she'd prescribe baby aspirin and Cyclogest. I found out on Saturday I'm pregnant, and I'm about 4 weeks.
This may be TMI, but I'm absolutely petrified of inserting things vaginally, even fingers... I had a stressful time when I had my D&C with the twins, and they couldn't insert the tiny pessary because I couldn't handle it...
I just need some advice really....

Sorry to hear of your losses OP, it really is a horrible time! I’m glad to hear you are getting progesterone to hopefully support this pregnancy. I too have had 2 losses one of which was a MMC and have just received these pessaries. I completely understand your worry about them, I’ll be honest they make me squirm but I am able to get them in. Have you maybe considered popping them in your bottom as they only need to go in about an inch rather than being pushed up vaginally? I’m actually going to try this option as vaginally makes me gag (not sure if it’s hormones or just down there :/ )

If you would rather do vaginally could you maybe try in front of a mirror? I know that probably sounds a little rank but at least you can then see what’s going on? If it’s any help they do go in very easily , just take some deep breathes and try to think about the benefits your be getting from doing this. I had read that squatting can help also.

Sorry I don’t know if that’s really of any use to you but please don’t worry , they aren’t painful, if anything just a little messy once they start working. Take care and I hope you get on ok x

I had cyclogest with IVF and during pregnancy. I also suggest using them in your bottom. Super easy - and less messy with wax! This is how my doctor told me to use them - from what I have seen looking at various IVF type boards, loads or even most people do it this way. Good luck with your pregnancy. xx

Sorry to hear about your losses OP. I like @Bumbers used them for IVF and for the first 10 weeks of pregnancy and agree it is much easier to do cyclogest rectally! Far less messy and once it’s in, you can’t feel it.

Do a little squat, lean forward slightly, take a deep breath and pop it in. By the time you’ve stood back up you shouldn’t feel it. Once you’ve done the first one, the next ones are a doddle, I promise! Hope that helps.

You could try using the little "tool" you get with Canestan pessaries. That might be easier.

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 20/09/2021 16:58

How did you get pregnant?! And how are you planning on giving birth now that you are?!

waxytimes · 20/09/2021 17:06

@SweetBabyCheeses99

Probably not by putting her fingers in her vagina. Do you need biology lessons? Hmm

You aren't meant to use these 'tools' whilst pregnant.
MrsFin · 20/09/2021 21:56

Really? Not that then Confused

showmethegin · 20/09/2021 23:12

@Nurse45 is that right? I was given them with mine?

haidri · 21/09/2021 00:27

@Tamalama I'm in the exact same situation as you with two previous losses & no underlying conditions. I was given aspirin alongside pessaries which I was petrified of as I've never inserted pessaries in before.

For reassurance sake, they only give pessaries for up to 12-13weeks and take you off it as the placenta is strong enough to continue your pregnancy to full term.

When I knew the pessaries are given to strengthen first trimester it was almost a countdown. So I'd just shove the pessaries in before sleeping & wait till days go by.

I'm now 20 weeks and God willing I'm good so far. This is the furthest I've come so I think it's prayers & help of aspirin with pessaries too

Nurse45 · 21/09/2021 08:23

Yes! If you are getting pessaries on prescription the pharmacist should be taking these out if they come in the box.

Minster2012 · 21/09/2021 08:58

Could you try ask for ones with an inserter? I've also had 2 MC & with my ivf pregnancy I was given egg shaped pessaries which came with an inserter rod so you didn't have to put your fingers up, this time I have bullet shaped ones I have to push up myself

You could try ask for a type that comes with the inserter?

Good luck I'm also petrified of the pregnancy

Aranciata · 21/09/2021 08:59

I was prescribed pessaries (Utrogestan not Cyclogest) for IVF and no one ever mentioned not using the plastic applicators. I didn't use them as I found them a faff and have loads left (plastic wrapped) if OP wants them PM me and I can post them but check first what Nurse45 is saying.

IsabelHerna · 21/09/2021 10:36

I am sorry for your losses OP, I wish everything will turn out alright with this pregnancy!

MissH995 · 21/09/2021 11:01

Congratulations on your pregnancy🥰

I'm currently 8 weeks after 4 early miscarriages. I'm also on progesterone and I was told to insert them vaginally. But it's messy, you have fo lay down for half an hour fo absorb it, it's a lot of effort. I then got thrush from irritation of inserting them vaginally🤦🏼‍♀️ but doctor then suggested to insert them up the bum and I haven't looked back since😂 just keep your fibre up to keep a good number 2 routine as it can cause constipation. But it's so much less hassle.

Sending my love to you🌈

Thank you everyone for your kind words, reassurance and support. I did use my first pessary on Monday and it was actually ok. I think the idea of it was actually worse than it was. I've now been using them twice a day and it's been ok. The side effects on Monday weren't fun but since then I've felt relatively ok...

I do have one question though, which may seem silly but is it ok to still have sex when using them? Obviously a few hours after they've been inserted, but I don't know if it was ok to still dtd. I've used Dr Google and can't find any kind of advice on there.

It’s fine to have sex with them in! In fact my advice was going to be to jest pop them in a bit and then get a helping hand with the rest Blush

boymum88 · 23/09/2021 11:22

I would say use them rectally if ur fancying a bit of sexy time they can make your cervix a wee bit sensitive and which when you dtd may give a bit of spotting x

Bear2014 · 23/09/2021 11:27

So sorry about your losses. I used quite a lot of Cyclogest during IVF and early pregnancy and always used them rectally. It's much less messy as if you use them vaginally you get this constant waxy leakage which is pretty unpleasant.
