subchorionic hematoma

So went for a 6 week scan and baby measuring fine with heart beat. Still very early days I know.

On the scan they found what they described as a 'bruise' which from googling seems to be a sub chronic hematoma? They were not worried and said to expect bleeding or the body may just re absorb it.

Anyway, I had no bleeding but yesterday morning me and my partner didn't do the deed but we had some fun and I orgasmed. Straight after I had some brown spotting and this is still going on today every-time I go for wee.

I'm now panicking. Even though the nurse said to expect bleeding after two losses I can't seem to stay positive Sad obviously not going to be having any 'fun' anymore but no one advised what not to do?!

Anyone else experience one? Super terrified.

I am now 8 weeks and was diagnosed with one at 6+5. I have been bleeding every day since then. The nurses told me it should clear up by itself and shouldn't harm the baby - but it's so hard not to worry! I have booked in for another scan this Saturday to see if it has shrunk. I think they are quite common though!

Had this in two of my pregnancies. Two healthy CD at term. It is extremely unsettling but perfectly possible for pregnancy to be fine. I had a very heavy bleed with one and it was ok. Hospital were happy to check me out after any bleeding episode. Just go - it’s better to be reassured than stressing at home. All bleeding had stopped each time by about 15 weeks I think.

Congratulations and CakeBrew - take it easy.

I had one showing at 8 week scan 1cm x 1cm (hadn't had any bleeding), sonographer said she expects it will resolve itself by 12 week scan which it had (had no bleeding at all with it). Now 36 weeks.

I had a previous MMC so was terrified, but all was fine. Easier said than done, but try not to worry x

LifesNotDoneYet · 20/09/2021 11:15

I had one in a previous pregnancy. Had no idea I had one and had never heard of it until at 8 weeks pregnant I woke up overnight with blood absolutely everywhere. Assumed I was having a MC but managed to get a private scan the following day which showed a large subchorionic haematoma. It bled a bit more over the next few weeks and then stopped and my DD was born healthy and happy at full term.

Phoenix2021 · 20/09/2021 11:55

Hi OP

I had large subchorionic hematoma in twin pregnancy wasn't diagnosed until 10 weeks when bleeding started. I had bleeding on/off (dark blood) with cramping until 15 weeks as it cleared out. Scans showed it was shrinking over time,

I did bedrest (because it was recommended) and pelvic rest (no sex) but this is not pushed for everyone) it was my doctors choice and it was an ivf pregnancy and higher risk anyways with twins.

In regards to sexual activity, I have read online says just avoid sex when spotting/bleeding (due to risk of infection)

I had spotting in my current singleton pregnancy weeks 7 to 9 and avoided sex/orgasms only for the weeks that I was spotting but resumed after.

I also had two miscarriages before my current pregnancy my advice is to trust your body and take rest as needed. Unfortunately your mind will go to the worst case scenario as mine does but try to keep calm.

It is a common thing and the most likely outcome is a full term pregnancy.

FloconDeNeige · 20/09/2021 11:58

I had one diagnosed early, at 5 weeks. At that point, it was larger than thd embryo and threatened the pregnancy but it gradually disappeared completely by 5 months. It bled on and off throughout that time, something quite heavily.

Was disconcerting but all was fine.

Hi @WJK00 I had a subchorionic hematoma at 11 weeks in this pregnancy (my 5th after 4 recurrent losses) it was as if someone had turned a tap on. The bleeding was awful, and I had brown spotting for about 5/6 weeks after. Was your scan with nhs or private? If it was a private scan maybe contact your local EPU and ask them to scan you for some reassurance. When I asked my consultant she told me just to take things easy xxx

WJK00 · 20/09/2021 15:26

Thanks for all your responses and nice to read all positive ones! Some of the big bleeds sound so scary but so glad they turned out ok!

The scan was a week ago I'm now 7 weeks and finally registered it with the midwife so might wait to see what they say? I am not heavy bleeding yet but like pp's have said any sight of bloody in pregnancy sends your into a spiral
If worry and it's awful especially when my anxiety is so high from the previous losses Sad

My scan was with the nhs at the EPU but will definitely be getting another reassurance once. Maybe in a weeks time (if I can make it till then)

Thanks for all your responses. I'm taking one day at a time and hopefully this one is a sticky bean 🤞🏼

Hi I’ve found this thread useful as I’m going through similar, got a private scan and was measuring at 5+6 (heartbeat etc was detected and baby in right place) but they advised there was a “blood site or bruise” showing and I’ve had brown blood/discharge for around a week now but no pain… I’m back in on Friday for follow up scan. First pregnancy so really unsettled seeing brown most times I wipe, midwife says not to worry and will likely be that passing through but making myself ill with worry!

WJK00 · 08/05/2022 20:27

Hey @cthom Just had a notification come up!

Just wanted to say Congratulations on your pregnancy!! It is scary seeing the brown blood/discharge but there is an explanation for it and hopefully it'll eventually bleed out or absorb and the brown bleed/discharge will stop. But 100% understand your worry.

Just wanted to update you to say I went on and had a 9 week scan also for some peace of mind and was still a small bleed there however it had cleared by the 12 week scan and have had no bleeding since!

Currently 41 weeks and this baby does not want to come out!!

I hope Friday goes all ok for you I am sure it will! Flowers

Thanks so much this has made me feel better :-) it isn’t overly heavy or causing me any pain so I’m trying to relax and hope it will pass through and be shrunk come Friday! Good luck - hope baby makes an appearance soon 😀🍀

JoeMaplin · 08/05/2022 20:37

I had one. I was petrified as it was quite big. By 20 week scan, it had disappeared completely- must have been reabsorbed. DD is now 18.

wishing you all the best

Amz6219 · 13/05/2022 12:23

Hi, had notification as I’d had this and posted upthread - I now have a beautiful 7 month old DD so try not worry!

I think it’s a lot more common than you’d think! X

Bubbles021 · 13/05/2022 12:47

Hello! I had this at the beginning of my second (current) pregnancy. I went for an early scan around 7 weeks as I lost my first baby at 33 weeks and wanted to check everything was okay. She also noticed this bleed above the sac, and like you I was told it would either reabsorb or I may bleed slightly. I had no bleeding, however I had to have a CVS test done at 12 weeks to check for a genetic condition. In the days that followed I started bleeding brown blood. I went to a&e and was checked and the baby was absolutely fine (I'm not 26 weeks and so far she's perfectly healthy!) But they also couldn't see any sign of the hematoma, so I'm assuming it did bleed away after the CVS!

Always worth getting checked if you're concerned though, and your early pregnancy unit should have you in 🥰

Bubbles021 · 13/05/2022 12:48

That should say I'm now 26 weeks 🤦🏼‍♀️

cthom · 18/05/2022 23:16

Mine was initially spotted on first scan 5+6, I had spotting from the next day for around 10 days which then stopped (nothing heavy very light) then had follow up scan at 8 weeks and it had shrunk to less than a cm, they says sound like it passed with the spotting and nothing to worry about so I feel more relaxed :-)

Amz6219 · 19/05/2022 10:56

Ah see @cthom by 12 weeks they’ll probably not see it at all, I think the word hematoma sounds terrifying but when you think a bruise is a haematoma too it’s a lot less frightening!

Its basically a bruise at the point of implantation - the blood has to redistribute somewhere and there is ultimately only one way.

Hope you have a lovely healthy & happy pregnancy, which i’m sure you will ☺️ X
