Hi all,

I'm pregnant again after 2 previous miscarriages within a year, and wanted to ask about low dose aspirin. I've seen it being recommended to women with previous losses and am keen to try if it's safe and doesn't pose a risk. I've heard that some people have been specifically told there's no harm in trying, but my GP are being really unhelpful and not giving an answer one way or another - all they've said is that I should be under the care of a gynae to be prescribed aspirin and that they can't comment on aspirin use. But then won't refer me for a gynae!

I'm 35 and don't have kids yet so I'm really aware of time running away from me, and if something as simple as low dose aspirin could be helpful I don't want to not give it a go? I'm also on progesterone pessaries this time around, so at least that's something.

Hi @GinnyBee.
Firsty congratulations on your pregnancy 🥳 im so sorry for your losses.
I could have written your story. I am also 35 and pregnant again after 2 miscarriages in 12months.
Im currently 12weeks today and this is the furthest i have ever got.
After my losses i asked my GP to refer me for some tests and luckily he agreed due to my age.
I spoke to the consultant who booked me for bloods and an internal scan to see if there was any problems. He also advised me to start taking 75mg of asprin straight away, which i did. 2 weeks later i was pregnant.
After i got my BFP i spoke to him about progesterone and he was happy to perscribe this aswell.
I do believe both these have helped me get this far and im looking forward to my 12 week scan on Tuesday.
Good Luck with everything. 🤞 X

I'm in that shitty recurrent miscarriage gang too and I've been prescribed aspirin, progesterone and high folic acid this time around by the recurrent miscarriage clinic/EPU.
The basic theory behind aspirin is that there are loads of different underlying blood clotting conditions which won't harm mum or effect her at all in day to day life. But will cause baby to fail to implant correctly or cause problems with their development in the very early stages. There's no harm in taking a low dose of aspirin daily unless you have a previous medical condition. However I'm not a medical professional and I don't know your history, so I would push again to your doctor to be referred if you're worried about taking it.
Also with progesterone, if you read these forums some women love it some think it's useless. And it's literally just that. If the cause of your miscarriages is that you're not producing enough progesterone in early pregnancy then your placenta won't form. So for those who have that problem it makes all the difference and it's a wonder drug. But if that's not your issue, then it's technically useless for you. But again there's no harm in taking this either way, even if that's not your issue it won't do you or baby any harm.
And the higher dose folic acid, once again, there's no harm in it so why not try that too.
I honestly wish you the best of luck moving forward, I hope you get your rainbow and some answers xx

Congratulations on your pregnancy🥰

I had 4 miscarriages in the space of 11 months. I'm not pregnant again and 8 weeks. I was under the recurrent miscarriage clinic after my 3rd miscarriage, but when I had my 4th I was under the consultant. We had plans going and he advised me to take 150mg aspirin. So I take one 75mg with breakfast and another 75mg with my dinner. I wasn't given any from the doctors, was just told to buy it. So I buy the ones in the yellow packet which you can get from home bargains, savers, places like that.

I don't see the harm in you taking it. I know there is women on here who swear it saved their pregnancy and was the cause of why they didn't miscarry. I would speak to a midwife rather than your gp and give it a go x

Now pregnant again**

I had 4 miscarriages whilst ttc.

I was referred for tests and no cause found.

I did my own research and started myself on 150mg (the new nhs recommended dose) a day of aspirin. I started taking it from 1dpo, and that month got my next bfp at 8dpo.

Fir the first time the pregnancy progressed well and we saw a healthy baby with a heartbeat at 5+4.

I was consultant led for other reasons but both the consultant and my midwife were happy I was on the aspirin and the consultant said if I hadn’t already been taking it she’d have started me on It anyway.

I was told to take it up until week 36.

I delivered my healthy baby 2 weeks ago and fully credit the aspirin for helping me keep that pregnancy!

8dpwoah · 17/09/2021 11:12

Midwife at my 12 week scan appointment told me to go on aspirin because I'd had a small baby last time so it doesn't have to be directly from GP/consultant, she just gave me a form to take to the GP to get it prescribed. I handed the form in so they knew I was on it but clearly haven't had aspirin on prescription when it's 50p a box in the supermarket 😂

That's a long way of me saying have a chat with your midwife because she can make it happen if she agrees there is a benefit above any cost once she's had a think about your history.

custardbear · 17/09/2021 11:14

Congratulations ladies!
Yep, also was a card carrying miscarriage club member. I saw a miscarriage consultant and had 75mg aspirin and high dose folic acid with both my now children. I had taken Agnus castus too (my own research) with my first child, prior to conception then stopped at BFP.
I had to have weekly injections with my second of HGC too which had a mixed response - second child is here after these but did have a miscarriage previously on this hormone. My consultant favoured this over progesterone but that was 10 years ago.
Good luck to you all! OP perhaps ask for a referral via midwife

custardbear · 17/09/2021 11:16

HCG *

GinnyBee · 17/09/2021 11:24

Thanks everyone! I think I'll start taking 75mg for now, and up my folic acid too. I've been promised early scans at 6, 8 and 10 weeks so I'll ask again when I'm at the EPU for the scans. Midwives here don't even want to hear about you until you're closer to 8 weeks lol so I don't think I would have much luck asking them.

So reassuring to hear you're had successes after previous losses xx

I take 75mg a day (yellow box OTC), midwife said best to take it at night and up until 36 weeks. I'm not sure why at night. This pregnancy I have tested with low Papp-A, which is why I take the aspirin. Have had a previous miscarriage but don't know if it's related. Viewing it as a low dose harmless thing that could help though.

Good luck, I hope it helps with you!

HotMummaSummer · 17/09/2021 12:25

I'm taking low dose aspirin, got prescribed at 12 weeks as I had preeclampsia in my last pregnancy. The consultant said it will lower the risk of preeclampsia by 80% so it won't do you any harm to take it. I was told to take it after dinner around 8pm... Not sure if that makes any difference!
