5-6 week (early scan)? What will we see?

Hiya,

So I am currently 5+1 I think and have booked in an early scan for next Saturday which via nhs calc is 6 weeks. The primary reason for this is that I have been put on blood thinners for a preexisting condition and I am terrified if it is a missed ectopic and ruptures my life could be in danger.

I am aware that a 5-6 week scan is really early but just wondering what experiences others have had? What you were/ were not able to see and if they put your mind at rest?

Xxx

I wasn’t able to see anything that early. Had to go back at 8 weeks.

I hope that everything goes well. Personally I would move it to a week later as you will be more likely to see a heartbeat rather than worrying that there isn't one which might just be due to the dates. I appreciate the worry involved however. We had a scan at 7+5 and saw a heartbeat and vague shape.

Moominmiss · 12/09/2021 07:59

I had one at 5+4 (with the EPU, not private) due to recurrent losses, and we saw an embryo with a heartbeat.

I had a scan at EPU around 5ish weeks, could see the sac and yolk in the right place. Went back 10 days later and could see the baby and a heartbeat. So don't be disheartened/worried if you see nothing more than a sac, it's probably just too early but I have seen on here some women who've seen the fetal pole or heartbeat before 6 weeks so you never know! Good luck Flowers

I had one due to recurrent losses and can see the yolk sac only. On the up side it’s big enough for them to see that it’s in the right place, on the down side it’s still too early to see a heartbeat

LunaDreams · 12/09/2021 08:49

I had one at 6 weeks due to spotting and they could only see a gestational sac. I was told they were unsure if pregancy was viable and had to wait 2 weeks for re-scan which fortunately showed it was.

Be prepared that they may not see a fetal pole, HB or even yolk sac. I personally would try and wait another week to avoid the anxiety of not seeing much and having to be re-scaned but I appreciate you have understandable anxieties about ectopic risk. Guess you need to try and weigh up what will make you feel less anxious- waiting another week for scan or potentially not seeing much on it next Saturday

Good luck whatever you decide x

I would try and wait a but longer, or accept that you may not see anything other than the gestational sac (although this would at least negate your worries about an ectopic pregnancy, provided all goes well). I've been having twice weekly scans as I've developed OHSS following IVF treatment. My last scan was on Friday at 6+4 and I saw a fetal pole with a heartbeat, but I know others who have had scans around the same time who haven't. As long as you accept you may not see everything you want to see and that this is purely for reassurance on the ectopic front - go for it. However I personally feel that if you can wait until 7 weeks, that would be better.

I had one at 6 weeks for similar reasons. They looked for three things:
-that there is a pregnancy
-in the right place
-and a heartbeat.

I had all three so you might be able to see a heartbeat. I had a follow-up scan at 10 weeks.

Thankyou all so much for all of your help and kindness.

today via nhs timescales I am 5+2 however I think in reality looking at when I think I ovulated I may actually be 4+4 (18dpo). My clear blue digital went to 2-3 last weds which would tie in with this theory so I am hoping for 3+ weds (still 2-3 this morning). If this confirms that I am actually 4+4 and not 5+2 I am going to push Saturdays scan back as I at least want it to be able to confirm that it’s not an ectopic if nothing else. I find it all so confusing but keep reading that the nhs dating works on a day 14 ovulation and I defo ovulate later than that.

If that is the case and I need to move it to the following Saturday I would be 6+3 minimum - 7max so maybe higher chance of seeing a little more hopefully. Most importantly though I don’t want to go and them not even be able to confirm baby is in the right place. The dating is all very confusing this early :)

Anyway honestly thank you all so much x
