Clexane injections pregnancy

Hi all

I'm currently 31 weeks pregnant and have been on Clexane blood thinning injections my entire pregnancy due to a blood clotting condition I have.

Starting to become difficult to inject my stomach as it's much bigger now and quite tight. I really don't like the thought of injecting my thigh but also really paranoid that as baby is much bigger now and I can feel her sticking out that a needle could hit her/the amniotic sac, can this happen?

Also starting to become very paranoid about birth and suffering from extreme bleeding or a pph after birth due to my blood been thinner on these injections. Any advice?

Hi,
I have been on clexane for both my pregnancies and yes i agree towards the end of the pregnancy it gets really difficult to do in the stomach. But i did carry on injecting there and had no problems.
Im sure you will be absolutely fine, its natural to feel anxious but the doctors are aware of your disorder and will be there if anything goes wrong with everything they need to know with your blood clots.

Injected all pregnancy and for 12 months after. Also blood clotting issues. I carried on into the stomach the whole time. I think you just have to make sure it’s a few cm away from belly button?

I had planned c section and eas just told to come off clexane beforehand day or two (I think - it’s a long time ago now!!)

I used to pinch whatever I could on the lower sides of my bump. It got harder but I managed till the day I went into labour a few days overdue. My consultant said I had to keep doing it in my bump rather than thigh.

I was told to stop injecting as soon as I went into labour and clexane and all my other meds were clearly marked on my paperwork so they knew what I’d been on.

Not long now, best of luck with everything and discuss your concerns with your midwife or consultant.

Nurse here. Clexane needles are very very small and will reach nowhere near baby. They should be inserted at an angle anyway, so just pinch some skin up and place the injection in there Smile

Presumably your medical team have weighed up the risks Re sustaining a blood clot compared to a PPH so I’d try not to worry about that.

33+5 here with DS2 so I appreciate everything is a worry at this stage! Flowers

I've only ever injected into my thighs . Never occurred to be too do so in the stomach. I'm 32 weeks now so no soft flesh on the stomach to inject even if I wanted to.

All I can say is those injections suck big time

I had a panic about the baby feeling then the other day when I was doing my injection & he started having a kickathon but probably just because I was lying down 🙈 consultant said once contractions started, skip the injection or don’t take the day before if being induced having c-section - he said it’s only low dose shouldn’t affect post partum bleeding anyway.

@SNKB14 Sorry but that’s incorrect (I’m a vascular haematology nurse), clexane and all pre filled subcutaneous LMWH should be given at 90 degrees as per the instructions Smile

Yeah they sting don’t they! Took me by surprise the first time.

Sorry to jump on this post, I've been on these for the last couple of weeks I'm only 11 weeks pregnant. I've been doing them in my lower abdomen but I've bruised so much it's painful can I do them anywhere else like above belly button etc?

TeddyTonks · 18/01/2022 11:17

@supollard - any tips to avoid bruising? I look like a Dalmatian right now Blush

Sorry to hijack!

daviddickinsonstanmachine · 18/01/2022 11:56

@TeddyTonks @Delight12

My best tip is to withdraw the needle at the same angle and as carefully as you went in. Often it’s whipped out and that part hurts! Administer it slowly.

As long as you are two inches clear around your tummy button, you can go above (less common though as tends to be less fatty). Remember it’s subcutaneous so need to go into fat, not muscle or skin xx

Delight12 · 18/01/2022 12:01

@daviddickinsonstanmachine thank you will give that a try
