Urgent dental treatment - first trimester

Hello everyone,

Finally pregnant again after a chemical pregnancy in January and I am trying to do everything to be healthy!

I have an absess on my gum, luckily its not painful and I've had it around 4 weeks (only just been able to get a dentist who I am seeing tomorrow) and after googling I have scared myself silly.

Basically everything I have read says do nothing in first trimester unless absoloutley necessary. I'm assuming my dentist tomorrow is going to say the treatment is necessary 😭. I literally feel like I'm going to give the go ahead to harm my baby.. Or worse!

Please can I have any positive stories of treatment done whilst pregnant...Particularly in the first trimester.
Im not so scared of the xray, it's the local anaesthetic that hasn't been tested on humans and according to some reports can cause miscarriage or birth defects!

I'm crossing my fingers and toes that they think that they can delay until second tri. X x

I'm not clinical, but I do work in dentistry. I would let them know you are pregnant and have concerns - they won't x-ray you as I don't believe it is needed for abscesses. They will most likely want to drain it, which could possibly be done without anaesthetic, if its really small they may just treat it with antibiotics.

X-rays only travel in a straight line so dental x-rays are deemed ‘safe’ in pregnancy if indicated clinically. If you have 8 months of pregnancy to go just get the treatment - unlikely to stay pain free with just antibiotics for that length of time. Honestly the risks of routine dental treatment to pregnancy are negligible - I’ve been working full time with dental x-rays all through pregnancy and have even had some treatment myself. I know it’s easier said than done but try not to stress!

Thank you for your replies :). Today is the day so hopefully I will be able to sleep a bit better tonight.

I do want to have the treatment, just in 6 weeks when I hit the second trimester like it's advised 😊 fingers crossed this is okay. If I was in pain, it wouldn't feel as scary. I would probably be begging to have it pulled out but i forget I have it! x x
