How to raise low blood pressure

Pitstop1986 · 07/09/2021 13:41

My blood pressure has always been low during the preganncy - about 90/60 was normal for me. The last few days I've been feeling more tired and lethargic than usual and out of interest I've been keeping an eye on my BP it seems to have fallen even lower, never less than 80/50, but still pretty low.

It seems to be that high blood pressure can be treated, however, low blood pressure isn't. I was wondering if anyone knew of any tips to help raise blood pressure naturally. I try to keep hydrated and have been adding salt to my cooking, which I don't normally do. Any other ideas?

Electrolyte drinks help me keep my blood pressure up. I've had low BP for years and years now so I basically live on them

Flight stockings may help (but might not be so comfortable in this weather!).

Mine was low at my midwife appointment today, 90/60, so interested to hear suggestions!

I wouldn't add salt to cooking unless you've been medically advised, we have enough salt via processed food like bread. Make sure you are taking a pregnancy multivitamin and stop monitoring your blood pressure, there really is no need. If you are feeling unwell contact your midwife and let her deal with it.

Definitely get advice from your GP. I was advised to add salt equivalent to what was in a packet of ready salted crisps. Did seem to help a little.

I have this issue at the moment. You should speak to your midwife in case they want to do other checks too (bloods for anemia, blood sugars etc).
My midwife recommended increasing my water intake as her main solution, also having more salt and sleeping on my left side. Aside from that, she didn’t have much to say. She referred me to the GD clinic.
The diabetes midwife wanted me to speak to triage or my GP just to rule out everything else.
How far along are you?

Pitstop1986 · 07/09/2021 20:17

Thanks for all of your replies. I'm 23 weeks along, have fainted and had dizzy spells a few times throughout pregnancy. I was told that it was normal, considering my blood pressure.

I had iron levels of 114 at my 12 week blood tests and was advised to take iron supplements and have been taking Spatone since and iron levels are more in the normal range. I have a gestational diabetes blood test next week (the one where you go in fasted then drink the glucose solution)

It's just frustrating as I tend to feel rubbish when my blood pressure drops and I've been in bed for the majority of the last couple of days. I'm ringing the GP in the morning for an appointment, but last time he just shrugged his shoulders and told me that nothing could be done. The midwives and gynaecologists that I've spoken to have been just as dismissive, saying it was one of those pregnancy things.

Hi OP, I have a similar issue (although my blood pressure rises during the day so ends up usually at just over 100/70). What I’ve found helps is:

  • Eat salt first thing (I add salt to peanut butter on toast)
  • Stay hydrated
  • Eat little and often - eating big meals diverts blood away from your head to your digestive system, which feels really unpleasant when your blood pressure is already low
  • Compression stockings
  • Drinking some caffeine first thing in the morning also helps, I usually have a cup of tea as I’m not drinking coffee

My GP recommended ready salted crisps and full fat coke to raise my DS blood pressure when he kept fainting...

But also said he would deny it if asked 😂
