Can I use the pram carrycot as my “Moses basket”?

Hi all, we have bought a bugaboo lynx in preparation for our first child arriving shortly. The carrycot part isn’t approved for overnight sleeping, but I presume it’s totally fine for naps as babies often fall asleep in their prams while out and about. So my husband and I were thinking, why not use it for naps during the day while we’re in the house. Is there any reason we need to buy a separate Moses basket for this? Anything I’m missing here?

(For overnight we have a separate crib so this would just be for daytime naps.)

Thank you!

We did with our egg pram + carry cot. You’d leave them in it anyway if they fell asleep on a walk like you say.

RavenclawsRoar · 06/09/2021 19:45

Yes we did. As you say, supervised daytime naps are fine. We bought a moses basket with ds1 and it was an absolute waste of money and space. Didn't bother with ds2 and didn't miss it!

Not quite the same as ours was ok for overnight sleep but I deliberately used the pram carrycot instead of buying a moses basket! It worked really well and meant the pram was a familiar sleeping place for DD as well as a form of transport, she used to nap really well in it so if we were struggling I could just pop her in her pram and be fairly confident she would give in and nap.

I have bought a basket for second baby as I think having her in a proper 'bed' downstairs will help her toddler sister understand to leave her alone if she's in there but we'll see.

We did this and DS slept much better there than in the Moses basket we borrowed. The hood on the carrycot was much more robust and I think DS preferred feeling cosy and enclosed when he was tiny.

You can always let your baby nap in the crib during the daytime too, and if they're too young to be left alone you can just read/MN/nap on your own bed Smile

Thanks so much everyone! This is very reassuring to read. Glad to hear it’s worked well for you, so fingers crossed it will for us too!

@89redballoons Yep, I think she’ll do some naps during the day in the crib as well! Definitely planning to try to nap when she naps at least some of the time.

Yeah for supervised naps it’s fine.

We never had a Moses basket and I’ve heard countless people say theirs were a waste of money and space.

MeadowHay · 06/09/2021 21:13

Yes that would be fine as others have said. We didn't have a Moses basket although our pram carrycot was suitable of occasional overnight sleeping. She would often nap in it downstairs on an evening before we would move her into the BedNest after her dream feed when we went to bed.

I have a Moses basket only because we were given one as a present. We intended just to use the pram during the day. We have dogs so it actually helps to leave him in the pram some of the time so he’s higher up away from them. It’s also handy to have him in it if I have any intention of going out anytime soon. If he was in the Moses basket I’d have to either hope he woke up before we went out or have to try and transfer him while asleep

Thanks all! Smile

I did with both my boys, they'll only fit in for a couple months anyway x

DappledThings · 07/09/2021 11:59

Yep, I never had a Moses basket, carrycot was fine.

I don’t think anyone has said yet that some prams are rated for overnight sleep and others aren’t. So I would only actually use it for nights if it is. Yours probably is, we had the bugaboo chameleon and it is ok for this, but I’d check.

ReeseWitherfork · 07/09/2021 12:02

Some prams specifically say they can be used for longer periods of time and some dont. So perhaps just make sure yours does?

The OP has said that it isn't and that she's only planning to use it for naps.

OP - are you planning to keep it on the buggy chassis? We were going to use the carrycot instead of a Moses basket but I wanted it on the floor next to me and we found it a real pain to keep taking it in and off and were worried about it getting damaged. For the cost of a Moses basket, it seemed much more sensible to use that rather than risk damaging our expensive pram!

CentralLondonPregnant · 07/09/2021 13:21

Hi, we’re not planning to use it for overnight as we have a bedside crib we will use.

I know the Bugaboo Fox carrycot is approved for overnight sleeping, but the Lynx is not (but obviously is ok for supervised naps during the day).

@mynameiscalypso I’m not sure if we’ll keep it on the chassis or not! I think probably yes as easier to keep an eye on her while we’re up doing things or (most likely) sat nearby on the sofa? But it seems very easy to take on and off so I guess we’ll just see what is easiest.
