Told one in 31 chance of Down’s syndrome

Hi there. I just wanted to share my results and speak to other women/ parents who are or who have been in a similar position before.

I’ve just had the results back from my 12 week prenatal screening report last week. The NT was 3.3mm, HCG 1.49 mom and Papp-A 0.67. I’m 31, a non-smoker and weigh 85kg. The sonographer struggled to get the NT measurement because baby kept moving so we were in and out three times, she clearly was concerned about it but for there eventually and it came in at an average of 3.3mm which is at the closer end of higher.

Midwife called to say I had a one in 31 chance of our baby having Down’s syndrome. The baby is our first and much-wanted. I was convinced I was infertile and unable to have children but fell pregnant quickly (and by surprise) after losing weight earlier this year. It felt like it was all too good to true.

I have been crying all day since finding out and can’t concentrate on work. Husband and I went down to see the midwife this afternoon and agreed to do the NIPT. We’ll have to wait until next week to get the results. We wanted to re-do the scan and blood test but apparently that wasn’t possible.

I feel so many different emotions right now. We will love the baby regardless but the world is cruel and I know life will be much harder for a child with disabilities than one who is traditionally healthy. Sorry this is a bit of a ramble, I just needed somewhere to vent. Feeling a bit lost and sad. Any advice or previous experiences would be great to hear.

Sorry to hear you are going through this OP but try to focus on the fact you have a 30 in 31 chance of your baby not having trisomy.
Obviously it's natural to worry but at this stage you are just being offered more focussed tests/monitoring to keep you and baby as safe and well as possible and at least you can go into this situation with fewer unknowns and as informed as possible once you have the NIPT result.
Be super kind to yourself over the next week and confide in someone close to support you if you can over the next tricky few days.

@SouthwestSis thanks for your kind message and advice. That’s a good way to look at it. I’ve confided in my mum so have got support as well as my husband.

Can you do the private blood test?

HopefulRose · 06/09/2021 18:05

@Mn753 I’ve never thought about it, how does it work?

The ‘private blood test’ is just NIPT, the NHS has started offering it to all women with high chance CST from 1/6 this year (1/7/21 in some areas). It’s what you’re doing already OP.

I had a similar situation a few months ago and know how desperately hard the wait is... sending solidarity, strength and positivity. I found some acceptance by the end of the week, acceptance that I'd love my baby whatever the outcome and acceptance that it's totally normal to want my baby to be 'normal' at the same time. I am sure it will all be ok, as it was for me xx

HopefulRose · 07/09/2021 06:41

@summerhillgang thank you. I wish I didn’t do the screening as we would love the baby either way when it arrives but this has brought so much stress and worry. Dealing with the medical staff and their disappointed faces/ responses makes things worse xx

Hi @Tawnia thanks for sharing, that’s so lovely
to hear and congratulations on your little one. We got the results back from NIPT and it was low risk. Went for a private scan today and baby was kicking around and being really active so feeling so much better now. Good luck with your little one!

MamaMolly · 12/09/2021 10:02

Hi @HopefulRose

I'm glad to hear your results have come back a positive! Just wanted to pitch in and say that when I was pregnant with my daughter she had a nuchal measurement of 3.5. We did the same as you and had the NIPT which came back low risk and we now have an extremely healthy almost 4 year old who couldn't be more perfect! Hope you manage to relax now and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy! Thanks
