Is it bad luck to have a Moses basket in the house before baby is born?

23 weeks and picking up my Moses basket tomorrow. I’m storing my pram at my parents’ because my mother is too superstitious. Is it “bad luck” to have other items at our house?

No. There's no such thing. Keep things packed away if you want, but bad luck is just for fairytales Wink

There’s no such thing as “bad luck”. Having a particular item in the house can not possibly have any effect on anything that happens. It’s a well known superstition, and it has probably comes about because of something were to happen then it could potentially be upsetting to then have a houseful of baby items. That’s the concern. There is obviously no “cause and effect” going on, how could there possibly be?

HungryHippo11 · 05/09/2021 04:54

Well no thats just a superstition. Surely most people have baby stuff in the house in advance, you're not going to traipse around the shops with a tiny newborn to buy all that stuff.

That said, I wouldn't buy a mouse market at 23 weeks as then you've got the keep it somewhere for months. Unless it was a massive bargain or you've got a huge house, why not wait for the sales or get one nearer the time?

HungryHippo11 · 05/09/2021 04:55

Mouse market = moses basket 🙄

shesellsseacats · 05/09/2021 04:59

No, it's total and utter nonsense.

If you are going to find your mum's superstitions rub off onto you and make you feel uneasy, you have two choices - tackle it head on and refuse to give into the nonsense or play along for an easy life.

Both are entirely valid, do what feels right for you, you have enough other more important things to think about right now!

When DS was a newborn, I felt a strong instinct to check if he was still alive and breathing a lot! I knew it was totally irrational, but I made a conscious decision not to fight the urge and just go with it even though I knew it was bonkers. And luckily it passed after a few weeks, it didn't turn into a permanent fixation.

IndecentCakes · 05/09/2021 05:01

I think everyone has to keep checking the baby is breathing, no? Grin

Definitely get a mouse market, though. Essential for every home!

Evianontoast · 05/09/2021 05:06

Haha thanks all... I know, I know. Sensible brain says “oh don’t be an idiot, how can it possibly affect anything?”. The part of my brain is less logical/that was raised Catholic says “there are more things on heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy”.

@HungryHippo11 yup, this is a mega deal. A friend got two and doesn’t need one... it’s a gorgeous one from John Lewis and she just wants it gone because of all the other stuff! Willing to put up with it as the only item in my house for now :)

Just be careful if you've got pets. They will think "OMG Mummy brings me a new bed!"

fallfallfall · 05/09/2021 05:18

If your mom believes the pram is bad luck in the home, she will also think the Moses basket or crib are as well.
But it’s just an old wives tale.

Evianontoast · 05/09/2021 05:29

@shesellsseacats oh my goodness, I have a younger brother and I remember up until he was maybe 12/13 I used to go into his bedroom every night before bed to check he was breathing (I should say I am only 3 years older than him but a very protective big sister). It must be some sort of maternal instinct thing.

@IndecentCakes oh yes, I’ve heard that cats in particular are bad for this! I have a chihuahua but luckily the basket comes with a stand so... I mean I’m sure he WILL want to sleep in it but luckily he won’t be able to :) I do hope having the smell/ sight around will help him adjust to baby things, though.

No, a moses basket in the house cannot cause you to miscarry, or anything else bad to happen, which is what 'its bad luck' implies. It's an old wives tale, presumably borne out of the fact that for those women for whom something did go wrong, it might be distressing to have baby stuff at home afterward.

8dpwoah · 05/09/2021 08:22

I understand the irrational side of that OP, I really do!

But if it helps, think about it this way, there wouldn't be many second babies around if it was actually bad luck as most people keep at least some stuff back from their first child to use with their second 🙂 I've reclaimed a whole chunk of our loft by starting to move things back into the house ready for our second.

@HungryHippo11

Mouse market = moses basket 🙄
I like Mouse Market. Sounds like something from Sylvanian Families!
romdowa · 05/09/2021 08:55

Our moses basket is currently filled with stuff in the corner of our room 🤣🤣 I've everything else in the attic but I've slowly been collecting what we need, a lot of it I've gotten free off Facebook.
