Are all first time inductions long and difficult?!

Getting induced tomorrow due to reduced movements. First baby and I’ll be 38+4, baby is head down but haven’t been told how engaged or if she’s engaged at all just now as I haven’t been examined. Been told about pessaries and a the drip and possibly a few days to get things started but all I seem to be reading online is absolute horror stories... please help!

It didnt take long for me! 12 hours from start to finish 🤣

COL1N · 04/09/2021 14:11

Good luck xx

I'm scheduled for pessary induction tonight (waters went last night but no contractions) I'm 41 weeks today! Fingers crossed for both of us!

KHR1 · 04/09/2021 14:15

My first induction was less that 24hours from pessary to birth (1cm dilated, cervix still high and hard when pessary went in)

MrsMcNtobe · 04/09/2021 14:15

@COL1N had you had any labour symptoms? I’m a little sore down there but that’s literally it 😂 xx

@ame88 good luck! I hope it’s quick and straight forward for you

I had an induction in May this year. Had the pessary put in at 1.40pm and my LO was born the same day at 11.57pm so just over 11hrs later x

MrsMcNtobe · 04/09/2021 14:18

@KHR1 that sounds better, midwife and doctor both advised that first baby could take days and when I read other threads it’s all about how long and stressful the process is, I know it could end up like that for me but I’m hoping it doesn’t have to be!

Sorry typo - meant to say 10hrs

Not at all.

I had the pessary inserted Wednesday morning, then just waited about, read my book, watched telly, slept etc till the next morning.

They were a bit busy so didn't get to me till 1pm Thursday, they were able to break my water which kickstarted contractions.

I had DD at 6.30pm, a little bit of gas n air towards the end.

There was lots of waiting around but I wouldn't say it was a difficult or unpleasant Labour, although it was my first and last so nothing to compare it against 😁

Same here, 12 hours from pessary in to birth. 37+4. I wouldn’t chose induction given a choice but I think a lot of the fear mongering is this ‘better birth’ narrative.

I also was only 1cm when the pessary went in. I had the 24 hr pessary. Only sucky thing really was I got those intense contractions that last for a minute and are a min apart, you know the ones all the birth classes say are like ‘the end’ but was still only 1cm. I had pethedine and in the hr was 10cm x

I was induced with my first baby at 39 weeks exactly in May due to reduced movements.

I got my first pessary in at 11:30am the Sunday morning. Due to his heart rate dropping a little I didn't end up getting the second one in until 11pm that night when I was only 2cm dilated, they told me I'd probably be in for a long wait. The pain started just about the time I got the second pessary, I then had him just after 5 the Monday morning.

So from the first pessary to having him I was 18 hours but from the pain starting I was just over 6 hours

Smartiepants79 · 04/09/2021 14:23

Mine took about 12 hours also.
No labour pains before.
Waters and broken.
It was fine.

Daisy4569 · 04/09/2021 14:24

I had mine in feb this year. Pessary in on Saturday morning, watched tv and wasted time etc until the following day (didn’t feel anything). They broke my waters around 6pm on Sunday, drip an hour later I think and he was born at 2.05am on Monday. No pain so no pain relief. The thought of going in was the worst but for me!

ConstantlyIrksome · 04/09/2021 14:26

I went straight to the gel for some reason - it was a couple of years ago and I think the protocol has changed. Still, it was 12 hours from gel going in (cervix fully closed, posterior and hard) to giving birth of which around 4 felt like 'proper' labour.

Zacharysmommy · 04/09/2021 14:44

2 hours- although my waters had broken but no contractions. Smile

SouthwestSis · 04/09/2021 14:58

Can you try expressing colostrum to help get things going whilst you wait for the induction? Might help your cervix relax and stretch so the induction isn't as painful. There's some good videos on YouTube

JennaPenna · 04/09/2021 15:02

9am first pessary, DS born 13:00 the next day.
It was a long day as things didn't get going until 22:30, I watched a lot of films!!

MrsB2019x · 04/09/2021 15:17

I was induced almost 4 weeks ago with my first, I had the gel at about 12:45pm, waters were broken at 6:45pm and I was fully dilated at 4:45am. DD wasn’t born until 8:45am but that was due to her size rather than the induction itself! Aside from the pushing bit it was all very straight forward ☺️ Good luck!

MrsMcNtobe · 05/09/2021 21:20

@ame88 I hope everything went good for you!

I had pessary and ds born 6 hours later xxx

Jurassiclover · 05/09/2021 23:25

I was induced 5 weeks ago at 38+1 although I was already dilated enough for waters to be broken so I had no gel/pessary/drip or anything. My whole labour was 4 hours from waters breaking to baby being born, so not always long! Good luck OP!
