Baby stopped growing at 20 weeks, advice please?

At my 20 week scan it was picked up that my baby has a varicose vein/vein varix in her umbilical cord. I had another scan at 24 weeks and found due to this she hasn’t grown since 20 weeks and has lost weight. At 20 weeks she was only 358grams.

I’ve got to go back in two weeks for another scan to see if she’s grown but not sure what to expect if she hasn’t grown. Anyone been through anything similar? The consultant seemed reluctant to give me much information and although I’m trying my hardest to not stress, I’m not doing so well 😩

Hi Claireece97 just wanted to check in and see how things are going with you?

Claireece97 · 13/09/2021 20:53

Thank you for following up on me, I had another scan today and luckily she has grown a bit but is still measuring small. Consultant hasn’t really say anything or given me any information, just that they want me to have growth scans every 3 weeks to see how she’s getting on. Hopefully she’ll just continue to grow at her own pace and I’ll have a smaller than average baby at the end of it

Dopplers still looking ok OP? That’s the best way to know baby is getting what they need through the placenta. What centile is baby on? It’s worthwhile remembering that 7/10 babies that measure small are what is deemed ‘constitutionally small’ aka perfectly healthy, growing at their own pace and getting what they need but they’re just petite xx

My little twin was very very small - didn't even chart on the centiles (her big twin ate everything!) the consultants were happy so long as she grew at her own pace - at 23 weeks she was only about 375g - she was born early at 34 weeks and was only around 4lbs but she is perfectly healthy x

I have no knowledge about the vein varix.

With DS2 I started getting fortnightly scans from 24 weeks (I don't remember weights) he was just gaining enough every fortnight until I was 36 weeks and he had only gained 19g in that time. They told me ideally he would be gaining 20g a day by that stage.

So they gave me 2 days notice that they were doing a c section because they were worried about my placenta failing. He was 5lbs 12 but perfectly healthy.

I know it's a really worrying time but don't be afraid to contact the hospital for any reason and definitely phone them to get some more details and that should help relive some of your stress. Thanks

How did you go on ? I’m same issue saying baby small being sent for amino

Claireece97 · 27/07/2022 15:23

She ended up being born via caesarian section at exactly 37 weeks. She was 5 pound 3oz and was initially very healthy but struggled a lot with feeding and had a quite severe episode of low blood sugars which caused a lot of issues but she is doing well now. She was on 2nd centile at birth and by 4 months old was up to 75th centile so you’d never know now that she was little. The hospital did admit after that they should have delivered her much earlier but I guess it’s all down to the consultants experience.
Best of luck to you, there’s so many reasons this can happen but if your baby does end up being born on the smaller side definitely request blood sugar monitoring. Also ask about taking aspirin to help baby get more nutrients x
