Breech baby 36w

I had a growth scan today as babies Fundal height dropped on my charts.

Baby is measuring at the 75th centile and they are happy with the placenta and what not.

However, at the scan they told me baby is currently breech, I was only at my midwife appointment yesterday and was told she was engaged...the midwife who done the poking about was a student midwife but I would have thought they wouldn't get it wrong?

Anyway these things happen I guess but I don't really know what to do now, the sonographer said to let me midwife know but I don't have a direct number and I don't see her till the 18th September by which point I'll be 38+2
Should I just call the community midwife line and let them know.

Also would I feel her move out of the breech position at 36weeks? Is it noticeable or can she just switch and change with out me knowing?

Sorry FTM if you can't tell haha ConfusedSmile

That’s a strange way they’ve gone about it.

I was told at 36w mine is breech, she sent me straight for a scan then the doctor came and talked me through the options and ended up booking a c section at 39 weeks. He’s 37+3 now and still breech. Sometimes I feel him try to turn but he doesn’t manage it and goes back to his usual position with his head in my ribs.

They really should have given you a proper plan and appointment, I’d be phoning your hospital’s maternity helpline.

Hi OP,

Similar thing happened to me when I was 40+2 and had a growth scan, baby was found to be breech but 4 hours before the scan was examined by a midwife as my waters has broken and she said she could feel babies head! Needless to say I was shocked when the sonographer told me and she said that sometimes midwives can get it wrong with breech babies in that they think they can feel the head when actually it’s the bum!

As my waters had already broken and I was already in hospital, the consultants came round straight away and recommended a C section.

I would definitely get in touch with your community midwife team but like pp said I would have thought that you would have been referred to a consultant after your scan. I wonder if you could contact the hospital again as well as the midwives.

There is some manoeuvre that they can do to try and get breech babies to turn but I’ve completely forgotten the name of it.

Wishing you the best with the rest of the pregnancy!

SmidgenofaPigeon · 03/09/2021 00:04

The manoeuvre is called an EVC, and I refused it because it is really dependent on the expertise of the person doing it, and only works 50% of the time, and there are risks it can distress the baby (although I should say these are very small ones and it’s a totally individual choice to try)

The midwives indeed sometimes do better it wrong with a breech baby but a scan will confirm- I’ve had 2 now to see if he’s still in breech. The likelihood of a baby turning by themselves after 37 weeks is about 1 in 8 for a first baby.

I’d definitely ring whoever you can and get an appointment sorted to discuss.

My first baby was breech at 37w and turned one night unexpectedly - believe me, you can feel them turn! Very odd/uncomfortable!

But prior to this they had been scanning me and we were preparing for a c section due to baby being breech so you need to chase that up.

Good luck x

I had a breech baby. Was offered ECV, was put off by negative comments from sonographer and nurses. It’s risky, very painful, you have to be monitored afterwards, baby can just move back to breech.

You need to chase up as you’ll be offered Elective C Sec. Good luck with whatever you decide!

I hope she manages to turn by herself I looked up the turning thing at looks horrible!

I will call the midwife today, I did think it was a little weird for them to tell me to contact the midwife rather than then sending off for an appointment or something.

I was reading and saw if they are still breech by 38w they are very unlikely to turn by themselves so hopefully she gets a wriggle on soon lol

Mine was breech at my 28 growth scan. I have a another rescan soon and am glad it will be properly checked. I can see how you could confuse a head with a bum they’re engaged!!

I would definitely phone the midwife number. You’ll need to discuss your options.

I wouldn’t even attempt the turning. There are risks of the cord getting wrapped around the babies neck due to the movement. Also can be painful and they can flip straight back!

alltheeights · 03/09/2021 09:19

I just spoke to the midwife team who have booked me in with a consultant (over the phone) to discuss options later today....I hate phone appointments lol but tis the world we live in now.

I think I will book for a c-section with the hope she turns before, I feel like she's kinda trying already so keeping my fingers crossed

That’s good. I don’t understand why they’re still phone appointments. Maybe they realised it was quicker!

Hi I just wondered how you got on? My baby is still breech I'm 36 weeks tomorrow. I've sent myself into a panic as when you google breech baby it mentions birth defects and issues, :(

alltheeights · 17/09/2021 14:01

@jessicakxx

I chose not to go ahead with the ECV....something just didn't sit right with me.

So the ECV should have been on the Friday, Saturday I started getting contractions went in and they was prepping me for csection as doctor was busy in surgery, once doctor was ready they came and scanned me and she flipped! They think that's what caused the early latent labour (baby is still not here)

I was 37+2 when she flipped all by herself!

It's personal preference but I will keep my fingers crossed that yours moves by themselves xx

Thanks for getting back so quickly, so happy for you, good luck with your labour ❤️❤️

Almostcooked2021 · 19/09/2021 07:37

My little one was breech at 36 weeks. Was scanned at 37 and both doctor and midwife thought she was transverse (even worse 🤣).
However scan at 37 and 38 weeks both showed her head down and engaged..she is obviously just positioned oddly through her body which has been confusing all the professionals.
I didn’t feel her turn exactly but had been monitored in the day we think she turned due to unusual movements (very very busy baby that day) and having Covid at the time.
Hopefully baby turns around for you - I’d be speaking to your midwife ASAP just to make a plan for the coming weeks. There is loads on YouTube with regard to encourage babies to turn. It’s mostly about preventing them engaging the wrong way around so they have free space to turn themselves. Good luck!
