Soo I have been for a growth scan and baby is still measuring on 3rd centile so I have been booked in for a section at 37+2 (second section).
I have another growth scan in two weeks and I will then be booked in for 2 steroid injections and have an appointment for a pre op 3 days before.
Just wondered if anyone has any experiences to share.. what to expect? How it all went? Are the injections really awful? How far apart? What will happen with the pre op? Is there a chance my section won’t go ahead if they have emergencies?
My brain is full to bursting with anticipation..

Hiya, I’m scheduled for my elective section this Friday at 37+4. Not due to a small baby though. I have gestational diabetes.

I had my first steroid injection yesterday, and my second injection today. Neither hurt. I’d been so worried and worked up over it as I’d made the mistake of googling. I’m a total wimp when it comes to needles but honestly it was fine. I stood up, and they put the injection in my bum, then today they did it on the other side. It stung for like a second and felt ever so slightly achy for 5 minutes, but honestly I wouldn’t know I’ve had them now.

At today’s appointment I also had my pre op. They checked urine, blood pressure, took bloods, did a Covid swab test, and ran through paperwork. They told me where I am on the list for the day and what time to be at hospital.
They ran through my c section preferences, and then gave me 2 tablets of omneprazole (sp) which I have to take the night before my section at 10pm, and then 7am the morning of the section.

Whole appointment took no more than an hour, and that was only because they put me on the ctg monitor for 20 minutes as baby had been a bit quiet since my initial steroid injection. But that’s because the steroids can really affect my diabetes blood sugar levels and we had to readjust my insulin that I take.

As with any electives, emergencies will always come first and there’s always a chance that if a situation presents itself that Is deemed more of an emergency than your own, then your section will be bumped down the list.
It depends really where they initially put you on the list, if you’re already later in the day and one of the last on the scheduled list then any emergencies are more likely to mean you could end up being bumped until the following day.

I am 1st on the list for the day so have been told I should expect to be taken to theatre around 9am but of course emergencies will come first and I could still be waiting by the afternoon!

So I had the injections at 28 weeks with my twins as risk they would come early and little twin wasn't even charting on the centiles and never did.....

The injections.....given I'm a pro at injections after 5 rounds of IVF and having to do clexane injection for 12 months during my first pregnancy and having a spinal epidural.....not going to lie they bloody hurt! Not helped by the doctor saying as she came in with them that these are the worst injections I'll ever have 😬
They are done 12 hours apart

Pre op just goes through the paperwork and you might get a visit from a SCBU/NICU nurse to discuss process if baby needs to go in there but at 37+2 you are classed as full term and I think as long as baby is over 4lb (some hospitals have a cut off below which it's automatic SCBU/NICU admission) then it won't be any different to your previous birth?

Yes if there is an emergency your c section may get bumped to later in the day or even the next day - depends on how many theatres the hospital has, staffing and how many emergencies

Just saw that the PP poster had her injections in her bum......those ones don't hurt at all as (sorry poster!) there is more softer fatty tissue there

It's the ones you have in your thigh muscle which hurt like a bitch

You are in the exact same situation as me, small baby and booked in for a section at 37+2 Grin im 34+4 now so following to see other people’s experiences. I don’t work out if I’m nervous or excited, it’s my first baby and just really don’t know what to expect!

Peachee · 01/09/2021 23:36

Ahh we are pretty much exactly the same then.. I’m 34+4 and booked in at 37+2 on my 28th. Such a bundle of mixed emotions!

I had a planned section 9 days ago at 38+3. I was given the steroid injections one on the Saturday before with my pre-op appointment and then one on the Sunday.
The pre-op was just a blood test and covid test, they then went through the day. Time to arrive, likely time if section etc.
The only thing I found with the steroid injections was I got quite hot in the evenings but felt fine.
Section all went to plan and I now have a beautiful baby girl. If you have any questions feel free to ask. I hope all goes well xx

Thankyou, I’m glad you had a positive experience! Congratulations on the birth of your baby girl too xxxxxx
