Naming baby after a parent somehow?

Really odd title so I'm sorry.
My Nan passed away a couple of days ago, she was my Nan but she was my mum, brought me up since a baby. Always there for me, always called and text every day. She was my mum but biologically my Nan.
Im due a girl in 3 weeks.
My eldest already has my Nans middle name. For my new baby I would like to somehow have something from my nan.
My nans name was penny, if I picked a new name that started with p I wondered if that would a way? I want a way that she is always in my daughter is that makes sense. Any advice would be fab

I’m so sorry to hear about your loss :(

We are including my husbands parents (both sadly died) as a middle name, depending if boy or girl, we will use his mum or his dads name, we haven’t found out what we are having and due in 4 weeks

Penny is a really pretty first or middle name :) it’s lovely you want her to be a part of your daughter’s name x

OldLadyGrantham · 31/08/2021 17:51

I am sorry for your loss Flowers

Did she have a middle name herself? Or maybe a female relative/mother figure she was fond of and often talked about?

OldLadyGrantham · 31/08/2021 17:53

Sorry I misunderstood your message; you’ve already used her middle name. I think Penny is an absolutely beautiful name though.

Stillcrikey · 31/08/2021 17:53

What was her maiden name? Could that be used / changed somehow!

grey12 · 31/08/2021 17:54

In my husband's culture the name of the father is the middle name. It's ok if they have the same middle name, why not? Wink

grey12 · 31/08/2021 17:56

I misunderstood Shock

Hummm.... it could be a middle name then if you don't want it to be the first name

Tinydancer321 · 31/08/2021 17:57

Yes I have already used her middle name for our eldest daughter. Could use penny as a middle name. I don’t think I use it as the baby first name as wouldn’t sit right. I have no idea what her maiden name way 🤦🏼‍♀️. Just not sure if penny would go as a middle name. That’s why I was thinking of maybe naming baby beginning with a p. Like my Nans name. I can use her middle name again as doubt it will matter using it twice.

You could call her Penelope and there are lots of nice shortenings e.g:
Poppy
Nell/Nellie
Penny
Even Ellie?

Arecklessmanor · 31/08/2021 18:01

Sorry to hear about your nan 💐

A few ideas:
Penny as a name or middle name (was your nan named Penelope?)
Your nan's maiden name as a middle name
Her favourite flower as a middle name if that works
A name she loved
A different tribute. Donna means 'woman' in Italian and is only one letter away from 'nonna' meaning grandmother. There might be something like that in your heritage.

Your nan will live on through you and how you care for your children the way she did for you, whatever their names.

Something like Penelope which could have a nickname of Penny

My daughter is Megan which is a form of Margaret which was my grans name we picked it because we liked the name not deliberately to name her after her but is a nice to have that link she has a middle name which includes my other grans name plus a family name from my husbands side.

Moominmiss · 31/08/2021 18:03

My niece is a Penelope and gets called P or Penny.

Super cute name.

Tinydancer321 · 31/08/2021 18:04

Thanks. Her name was actually Phyllis but she changed it to penny. Although Penelope would be nice too. I was thinking of the poppy or phoebe.

Phyllis is a fab middle name!

Quincejam · 31/08/2021 18:07

Could you use phyllida or Phyllie or similar - I like Penelope though

Tinydancer321 · 31/08/2021 18:11

@dalrympy I agreee prob would be a good middle name. I need to find out why she changed it. I don’t think she disliked it I think it didn’t go with her surname when married but not sure.

Also I quite like Penelope I suppose it just wasn’t on our list x

Penny means Weaver, these are other names that have the same or similar meanings

I'd also look at the possibility of using your Nan's favorite flower or gemstone as a mn.
