Panicking… Anyone booked an early scan after bleeding? 11 weeks

I’m 11 weeks pregnant and have been experiencing light bleeding brown/red and very light pain for 5 days now. Local midwifery unit have no free ‘emergency’ scans for another 8 days although I have booked this too. Would It be reasonable to book a private scan? Available locally to me for £79 tomorrow. I know that it won’t change the outcome whatever happens but I’m not sure I can go another 8 days without knowing?

Normally a very positive thinker but something tells me there’s something wrong here. Also sorry to be so matter of fact but what if they scan me and do find a miscarriage? Do I have to wait for the NHS scan in 8 days anyway?

Never had a miscarriage before, previous pregnancies with no bleeding.

Am I overreacting? Feel really sad/anxious about it

Sorry to hear about this stressful time.

On Ultrasound Direct website it says:
What if I get bad news during my scan?

In the event of unexpected findings: we will offer clear advice on the next steps available to you and will offer to contact the local hospital on your behalf.

Should you receive bad news in your scan you are welcome to take time in private in our clinics to process the news and gather your thoughts before leaving: we never want you to feel rushed.

I hope you get answers soon whatever you decide to do. 💐

Sending you positive vibes! I had bleeding jsut after 10 weeks so booked a private appointment with Ultrasound Direct (had to wait for the NHS a week, but kept that appointment too!) - luckily it was good news for us but I was so anxious before my scan, I told the ultrasound technician that I don't want to see the screen until she finds out what was happening. She was SO VERY sympathetic and compassionate, she found the heartbeat straight away but only turned the monitor towards me after letting me know what she could see.

I would not hesitate to book a scan again for reassurance, for me (normally very anxious anyway) it was absolutely priceless to find out what was going on, regardless of the price. YANBU for wanting to be seen ASAP, I'd go for the appointment tomorrow and take it from there. Wishing you all the very best ThanksCake

Thank you both. I’ve booked it. I just can’t wait that long. Just needed someone to tell me I’m not overreacting as I hate the thought of being a nuisance for nothing x

Sorry to hear that OP, I also experienced bleeding early on in my pregnancy and went the the Early Pregnancy Unit at my local hospital. Every hospital has their own process, I had to go to A&E who then sent me to the EPU. Best of luck , I like you couldn’t wait to get scanned for peace of mind

At 11 weeks you'd need to go to hospital for a miscarriage anyway so I'd just wait. I don't know that you'll get seen any sooner. I also wouldn't 100% trust a scan place to diagnose a miscarriage. They are not as well trained as nhs sonographer. They've been known to get things wrong. Both good and bad news. So even if they said all was fine I'd want a nhs scan too.

The sonographers at my local Ultrasound Direct work in the NHS hospital.
They do extra shifts in the private scan place as it is a flexible way to earn money.
I've had one not so great sonographer there (have seen many excellent ones) and one not so great sonographer at my local hospital (not the same person but DH went as far to say he wouldn't want me to be seen by her again and we'll submit constructive feedback).

I'd still want an NHS scan but if you pay at a facility and they contact the NHS on your behalf then it could speed up the process if they give diagnostic details.

Obviously the scan can only reassure you as to what's happening at a point in time so having the NHS scan a week or so later will hopefully give extra reassurance if it is good news, I do hope so.

I had bleeding quite early on, booked a private scan at 8 weeks for reassurance and it all looked fine. Have had a little more spotting since then but just had our first NHS scan today and all looking fine again, baby has grown in line with the EDD and was kicking and moving away.

I definitely think the private scan was worth it just for my own peace of mind. I still worried a little (and will probably continue to) but definitely a lot less than I would have done not knowing.

applesarethebest · 30/08/2021 21:42

I would have the private scan, and have done so twice, for peace of mind because I would want to know either way what was going on and have a chance to see the baby whatever happens.

Being pregnant is the most terrifying experience and even a week feels like a lifetime.

I had a miscarriage last year and on my current pregnancy I was an absolute mess...I had recurring bleeding, 6w, 8w, 11w and my last bleed was just after my 12 week scan...I had 4 private scans for reassurance and don't regret any of them! I couldn't wait with everyone telling me to "think positive" I needed to know if my baby was ok! I'm now 36w and after the gender and 4D ones I have also had I'm not far off £600 on scans, and every penny was well spent in my opinion

I hope everything goes well tomorrow!

Hi everyone I just wanted to let you know that I lost the baby. It had passed a few weeks ago so now have to go down the treatment road for a missed miscarriage. Absolutely gutted 😞 thank you all for your kind advice

Sorry to hear that OP. 💐

I hope the sad news was delivered sensitively and that you are now being treated by your local hospital.
