Low heart rate

Feeling very confused. Had scan at 8 weeks, 2 days ago. Dr said I've mucked up my dates and put me at 5 and half weeks as embryo is 3mm. I am 100% sure I am 8 weeks gestational age and haven't mucked up my dates. Dr didn't say much else and when I received my pictures later I noticed the heart rate was 86 bpm. Everything I've read says that this is really low but why wasn't it mentioned during my scan? My brain has assumed the worse but is still afew days away from a visit with my gp. Has anyone else had such a low heart rate?

Commenting for this not to get lost. Hope someone has answers for you ❤️

That would be considered a normal foetal heart rate for a gestational age of 5-6 weeks as the heart has just started beating.
Generally after this time it goes to around 140-160.

Thank you for replying. It is impossible for me to be that early in pregnancy, I know exact dates of period, sex and Ovulation. I so wish I had mucked up my dates though!

It definitely wasn't your heart rate he checked? 🤔

I've never been told fetal heart rate in any early/private scan.

Tataru · 29/08/2021 06:45

My DD's heart rate was 117 at 6+4. Are you really sure of your dates? When did you get a positive test?

torchh · 29/08/2021 06:50

You'll need to wait a week and go for a rescan.

Could be a miscarriage, or could be that the baby catches up.

I've been through it. The wait is torture but there's nothing else you can do.

Hoping for the best for you.

Good thinking, sadly she said to hold my breath for her to record babies heart rate. Then she said nothing and I didn't see the result or question it till later on when I looked at the photos. First pregnancy and I was alone because of covid so I'm not sure if it's normal in NZ to get heartrate this early.

It's normal here for them to measure the heart rate.

My experience of a baby measuring behind wasn't good (ended in miscarriage) but others have gone on to have their baby catch up at the next scan.

It's a horrible waiting game unfortunately

100% sure. Short and regular cycle, tracked, only had sex the once (11th july) and Ovulation calculater told me my 'most likely to ovulate' date was 5 days after we did the deed so there's no way it could have been any later. Positive test August 1st with (what I was told was) strong hcg levels 2 days later when I had a blood test. The date she told me I mucked up with was later then my Ovulation date and well out of the time sperm could have survived. Sounds dire huh!

Thank you. The wait certainly is torture, and harder that my country is in a strick covid lockdown which makes things take longer. I guess that's why I put up I post here since I'm struggling with the wait. My partner is being optimistic and supportive and I am feeling really guilty that I've managed to muck it all up somehow.

There's no way to 'muck it up'. If it's worse case scenario then it'll be a chromosomal issue and that egg/sperm wasn't meant to be.

Many women suffer miscarriages and then go on to have a healthy pregnancy next time.

Did you have a private scan?

I never ever knew how common miscarriages were till these past few days. It's scary to think about how many people go through it! And incredibly sad. It was a scan through my gp, I have had quite bad morning sickness and alot of strong pregnancy symptoms so my gp thought I was having multiples so sent me for an early scan (normally first scan is between 12 and 14 weeks here). 2 of my symptoms have disappeared today, which just makes me worry more.

Can you afford to book a private scan for 7 days after this scan youve already had?

Some people suggest waiting 2 weeks, which is what I did, and frankly that's too cruel.

A week is long enough to see if there is development or not.

I'm not sure if my gp will rebook me for a scan or just test my hcg levels through blood test. Haven't been able to talk to gp yet since its the weekend so will ring first thing tomorrow. I read about having to wait 2 weeks for second scan but I can't imagine waiting that long, this weekend has been horrible enough!

I would book a private scan if you can.

Messing about with hcg levels etc will prolong the agony, in my opinion of course

I'll find out tomorrow. With the current covid outbreak here I highly they would let me book a scan without a referral until things settle down. Thanks for taking the time to reply
