Constant fetal movement

Does anyone else have this, or had it in a previous pregnancy and can provide reassurance? Im 37 weeks with baby number 2 and never get a break. I know it's a sign of a healthy baby and I should be grateful but I can't help but think that this much movement isn't normal. They say typically babies kick 10 times an hour or have one hour of activity per day. I'm sure mine rests for less than an hour a day! Don't they need sleep? Yesterday there wasn't a minute that I didn't feel something during the day. Not a lot of kicks really, but constant shuffling. Can they do that when they sleep? It's making me tired and anxious. Thank you!

Just to add this isn't new (or I would get checked out,) it's pretty much been like this since I first felt movement at 15 weeks!

I’m exactly the same, currently 34 weeks, it’s non stop. My midwife says they do wriggle and kick in their sleep though and you feel it more now because there’s not much room

PeonyTime · 27/08/2021 07:38

DS1 was like that in-utereo.
He was very active as a baby, and slept much less than his contemporaries.
He still, aged 12, sleeps less than his contemporaries, although it is not as obvious these days.
He still figits a lot, and is still pretty active (and yes, that includes figiting in his sleep, he regularly spins round, sleeps with legs over the side - he fell out frequently after he moved into a bed)

messybun101 · 27/08/2021 08:24

A big sigh of relief this is happening to others
My very bloody active baby boy doesn't stop wriggling, pushing and flipping. I think he can't get comfy
MW says it's fine. I'm off for my 33 week scan at 9:40 and I bet it's the only time he stays calm. I'd love to see what he's up to in there though it's like he is trying to escape
I think baby takes it from his dad. He's a fidgeter and never sits still either

Kate105 · 27/08/2021 08:38

I'm so glad this isn't just me. OH is a massive fidget so this confirms for me that this baby is going to be the same... Joys! FTM so nothing to compare it to, but burst out laughing at my last MW appointment when they asked about movement patterns. Does all the bloody time count as a pattern?!

Also baby is now measuring big and I'm convinced that it's because of all the movements, since they're supposed to build up muscle that way aren't they? Now anticipating birthing Popeye...

On the other hand, no worrying about reduced movements or having to go in for monitoring...?!

Finalcountdown2 · 27/08/2021 08:39

Thank you it is reassuring though worried I'm in for a schock when this baby is born!

My first would really only be active in utero in the evening when I was lying down in front of the TV and was the easiest newborn ever. Never moved, never cried, didn't walk til 18 months, and has always been a really chilled child who loves his sleep. Better get ready for a hurricane :).

I tried asking my midwife but always get dismissed and told it's only reduced movements they are worried about. Nice to hear yours have said it's fine and that they can wriggle and kick in their sleep.

Mine was like that and he's now a VERY very very active toddler, always on the move. It seems to be physically impossible for him to stay still! He's absolutely fine development-wise, healthy and bright. Just full of life!

Finalcountdown2 · 27/08/2021 08:52

@Kate105 I laughed at "birthing Popeye" this is what I am imagining too! That they will pretty much be born a toddler with all this working out. So curious to meet them as I can already tell their personality is going to be something else!

@messybun101 this is exactly what mine feels like, not really kicking much, just pushing, flipping, etc. its like they just can't get comfy so are constantly moving trying to push my organs out of the way!

I had a very busy baby in utero too! When MW asked whether I had any concerns about reduced movements I remember replying, nope, he's always on the go and found it hard to imagine what it would be like if he wasn't moving much! Right from birth he was a very alert and active baby, he sat up early and at almost 7 months he is crawling, pulling up to stand and starting to cruise. He is full of energy and life, never stops moving, just like he was in the womb!!

Finalcountdown2 · 27/08/2021 08:57

Thanks @user1471523870 and @NewmummyJ they sound lovely and so much fun! Do I dare ask how they sleep :)?

Interesting that everyone on this thread is refering to boys too as we don't know what we are having. Wondering if it's a sign that its a boy :)

I’m 29 weeks and he literally doesn’t stop moving. I’m dreading him being here after my lazy daughter who never cried and never did much Grin

Squashpocket · 27/08/2021 09:10

Yes, had one very active baby in utero, one not so much. The active one was a very, very, very active toddler and only slept 10 hours a night as a baby. He's also quite athletic now as an older boy.

The less-active in utero one slept much better. Sorry!

I actually found having an active baby in the womb really stressful, because if he stopped moving for more than 20 mins I'd start panicking something was wrong.

Very interesting we are all talking about boys! Sleep has never been a huge problem, maybe as he burns so many energies during the day? As a baby he was up every 3 hours for a feed, but from around 15-18 months he gradually slipped into a routine of sleeping 10-12 solid hours from 8pm to 8am, roughly. He only wakes once during the night, but goes back to sleep quickly after we get to him (he sleeps through if we sleep in his bed or he sleeps with us). Going to bed it's a bit of a task as he would love to still be up and play, but the routine helps as he loves reading stories together and putting his teddies to bed:).

He's not a great sleeper! I think he finds it hard to switch off as he is so excited to be in the world exploring everything, he never stops! So he finds chilling difficult! We are hoping now he is more self-propelled he might sleep better... but it has not happened yet ! But you are right he is a lot of fun, very interactive and full of personality and character!
Blendabrethin · 27/08/2021 09:23

I had this in my first pregnancy, it was even noted in my notes thay I had an extremely active baby. It made scans a bit tricky (not to mention sleep/rest). I don't think this was a symptom of anything though - no one ever mentioned it to me in terms of being a concern (it was a complex pregnancy though, I had ICP and an electrical problem with my heart but the baby was perfectly healthy).

Kate105 · 27/08/2021 11:41

Interesting about the boys.... We also don't know what we're having so wondering if this is a sign!

BowsandBaking · 27/08/2021 20:14

Another one here who had an extremely active baby boy during pregnancy! He’s now 2.5 and more active than ever! I haven’t stopped chasing him around since birth so I’m very strong myself now. I even remember the consultant commenting on his strength and strong physique as a newborn before they discharged him. Currently 38w pregnant with no. 2 and this baby is shockingly quiet in comparison!

FTEngineerM · 27/08/2021 20:16

DS1 was very very active in the womb and is very very active outside too.

DS2 currently cooking and much less so. I have my fingers crossed for a much more chilled baby/toddler.

messybun101 · 27/08/2021 20:26

I've been at the hosp today for 33wk scan and baby had to be held still through my belly to get the Doppler reading as he whooshed away at every chance then kicked the sonographers hand away when trying to measure him

I think we're all going to have our hands full reading the updates from mums of active babies

MeMumI · 27/08/2021 20:49

This was my DD1.

Never stopped in utero. Bloody hard work as a baby, would only lay sitting up so she could look over my shoulder, and would scream when she got bored of the view. By 7 months, she was crawling and into everything. As a toddler, she was verging on being hyperactive and she never stopped.
At 5, she was put into gymnastics, joined squad and was soon training 18 hours a week, even that didn't calm her down...
just a very active child.

DD2 much quieter in the womb. Once born she would just sit in her baby bouncer, and be happy to watch the world go by, I was amazed that babies were just happy to do that.😂

messybun101 · 27/08/2021 21:41

@MeMumI DD2 was probably totally mesmerised by her sister all active and running around. She'd never be bored watching lol
