I'm 17 weeks pregnant tomorrow. I'm a teacher and I've managed to pick up both sickness and diahorea and also the flu.

I have to go to work tomorrow(not teaching, my other job) and there is no one to cover me at all, so I've no choice but to go. Myself and DP are really poorly.

Will this affect the baby? It's normally wriggling every day but it's not wriggling much at the moment. I'm also taking co codamol every 6 hours. There's nothing else I can take is there?

Really sorry cannot help as have no knowledge to share but just wanted to say i hope you feel better soon.

expatinscotland · 01/12/2007 21:07

if you have influenza and diarrhea you should NOT go into work. if they don't have anyone to cover that's not your problem.

i hope you feel better soon.

flu is awful! i couldn't make it to a computer when i had influenza last time, much less to work. it's such a horrible respiratory illness and that high fever and chills are the pits.

deckthehallswithFEETofTIGERs · 01/12/2007 21:09

don't go to work! Whatever happens if you aren't there isn't for you to worry about.

If you are pg, have the 'flu and the squits then you really ought to be at home. For yours and your babys sake as well as your colleagues.

Paracetamol is fine, not sure about cocodamol though.

hfl · 01/12/2007 21:33

even if you werent pg you shouldnt go to work if you are sick.
i am always annoyed when sick people turn up at work - i dont want what you have.

get well soon.

expatinscotland · 01/12/2007 21:35

especially with something like a D&V bug or flu.

i'm truly in awe of people who manage to go to work right after the onset of bona fide influenza, because really, the last time i had it, real flu, it hit me like a ton of bricks and i was a fit, childfree 25-year-old.

Sorry, I should have mentioned I work on my own, but my employers go CRAZY if I'm ever off ill and cause me loads of problems.

I'm not sure if it's fully fledged flu. I have aching everything and my skins really sore, my sinuses are killing and I keep shivvering like mad even though I'm on fire. I also have a headache, sore teeth and swollen glands. And the obvious bad cold, sore throat, cough etc. It could just be a really bad cold? I'm not sure?

I don't think I should go in. Thanks everyone.

Also, it's not likely to affect the baby is it? I'll go to the docs tomorrow because it's Sunday today.

A few weeks back, at about 19 wks, I had diarrhea, a bit of vomiting and a bit of a temperature (though not the flu). I went to the GP. His advice was that it wasn't anything to worry about, but that I should be careful to keep myself cool (no wrapping myself up in duvets!), take some paracetomol to reduce the temperature, and drink loads of water. He also suggested eating bio-active yoghurt to help the bacterial balance in the stomach.

I think you only really need to worry if your temperature goes very high.

I'd recommend calling NHS Direct today (if you are pregnant, they tend to respond very quickly indeed) and then going to the GP tomorrow. Best to be on the safe side. And certainly don't go to work...

expatinscotland · 02/12/2007 20:29

if you start vomitting red blood, too, that's not a good sign.

Thanks everyone. I'm recovering now, it's just been a crappy week illness wise.

Think everyone's catching things at the moment, it's that time of year.

I had to go to hospital today anyway because I had awful pains in my bump and my GP sent me up there. They sort of fobbed me off in a way (possibly because they didn't like the doctor's referal as it was written and they couldn't read it very well) because they didn't listen to heartbeat or do a scan, so DP asked for them to listen to the heartbeat and they did after some huffing a puffing. They must be seeing a lot of people at the moment!

Don't worry - your pains are probably muscle aches and baby growing - I had pains with both babes during pregnancy (7 and 2 1/2). Also, please don't let employers bully you - you and babe are no.1 and you are in charge of yourself - it really annoys me in this day and age that employers think they can treat you as such and these sarcastic programmes on television don't help - people take this as reality. Once you have had babe and in charge of this little person you won't let anyone muck you around - "the wrath of mother - do not offend!".
