Elective cesarean advice

Dear Ladies,

I was hoping you might kindly share your experiences if you have needed to ask for an elective cesarean. My reasons are due largely to previous experiences of trauma namely ectopic pregnancy/life saving surgery.

Specially I’m wondering about what expect during your first Obstetrician consultation in terms of what questions they will ask me and what information they want to know. I’m aware of the NICE guidelines and have already done some reading.

My midwife has been incredibly supportive of my reasons why but any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Many many thanks

Hi!

I had an elective section after a EMCS with my first which was complicated with heavy blood loss and sepsis.

I just told my consultant I wanted a section - he gave me the facts of risks for both a vaginal and a section and I firmly stated I still wanted a section. He agreed, I got a letter in the post and a phone call at 36 weeks confirming and booking me in!

Please remember, just be firm with what you want and you sound like you’ve done the research anyway. I had absolutely no problems, and all they wanted to know was if I understood the risks and what would I do if I went into labour early, when I stated I would come to hospital ASAP to be fitted in as a semi emergency section which they were fine with.

It’s absolutely your choice to have the birth you want, and if you have any issue with the consultant just ask to be referred to someone else, as they can’t refuse to offer you one

I'm having an elective section tomorrow, I chose this route as had an emergency with my son and also lost twins last year and had to give birth to them. I explained I can't relieve that experience and my consultant agreed we need to make this birth different and positive. It was really straightforward and everyone was really supportive. I'm not a mixture of excited and nervous for what's to come tomorrow. I hope you have a positive experience too xx

All the very best for tomorrow. It sounds as though you are in safe hands and will be well looked after.

Take care xx
