My bump is huge this time. It’s number 4 and I was this size full term with no 1.

My midwife can’t believe how big it is so has sent me to the consultant.

It will be over 11lb if this continues. I know fundal height isn’t exact but my bump is massive.

Anyone else had this and delivered an average size baby?? Previous were 7lb, 8lb 13 and 8lb 14. First two on time and third 16 says

Fundal height is not a good indicator of baby size. They will send you for growth scans to see how baby is growing so I wouldn't worry too much atm. Could be fluid or a larger baby, big ones are not always hard to birth.

I've been ahead on fundal with all our singletons. 1st was an average 7lb 7oz but others have been big at 10lb 12oz @ 40+5, 9lb 10oz @ 40+2 & 10lb 15oz @ 38+6. 1st 2 were natural unassisted births but most recent was cesarean, contractions and her size caused scar rupture (had elcs with breech twins last time) though I was booked in for an elcs the next day anyway (sods law she decided to come earlier). I've had polyhdramnios before (high fluid levels) and that didn't cause any issues.

1st 2 big ones that is, smallest was a vontouse due to fetal destress

Bennetgirl · 23/08/2021 11:45

Thank you. Did you have c sections because of the size? I had a mild prolapse after dd3 and really don’t want to know what could happen with a 10lb + natural delivery 😩

My fundal height was roughly 6 weeks ahead throughout (I was having growth scans too) DS was born at 39 weeks at a healthy 8lbs 11oz. The scans indicated he would be roughly 10lbs too. It's not always accurate and fundal height definitely isn't

Chelyanne · 23/08/2021 15:44

@Bennetgirl I booked a c section with most recent because I was worried about scar rupture risk with a big baby. I was right to book it as her size did cause rupture but just unfortunate that I went in to labour prior to my booked date. Recover from this one has been much harder than my last section.
The big ones that I had vaginal births with were good births, the 9lber took 3 pushes and I tore, the 10lber 14 mins of pushing because he has broad shoulders and they cut me to avoid tearing.

If you've had a prolapse before it's worth discussing c section as an option or an early induction if baby is much larger than your others were.

Hi OP. My fundal height is 2/3 weeks ahead. Had a growth scan today at 32 weeks due to low Papp-A. Baby is measuring 4lbs. I know neither are an exact science but hopefully the scan is the more accurate of the two! Try not to worry until you’ve had the scan and know more. Could simply be you’re carrying more fluid and they’ll check to see why xx

Bennetgirl · 23/08/2021 20:33

Thanks all. It is a worry when everyone comments on your bump size.

🤞🏻 It’s fluid x

My fundal height always measured small a few weeks behind so we were shocked when out popped a chunky 9 and a half pounder! (Complete with a jet black mohawk 😁) Scans & fundal height measurements are definitely not accurate. But like PP said could just be a lot of fluid.

Secretsout · 23/08/2021 21:00

Fundal height is nothing to do with the size/weight of the baby. It's used to check your baby is growing with the aim of detection of growth restricted babies. The only way to estimate size/weight is from a growth scan.

fastandthecurious · 23/08/2021 21:03

@Bennetgirl it's horrible when everyone comments on your bump isn't it. I'm pregnant again with number 2 and only 14 weeks and people are already saying 'you're going to be massive again' 🙄🥱

Bennetgirl · 23/08/2021 21:46

@fastandthecurious It really gets me down. I obviously know my bump is big, it’s so rude that people think they can comment on it.

I’m not due until November but have started telling strangers next month to stop the gasping 🥲

I know what you mean. It didn't bother me too much but I remember worrying frequently about having a massive baby, he wasn't though and he was fine. He would have been fine even if he was massive! Ignore the strangers! Soon they'll be cooing over a perfect newborn! ❤️

Mseddy · 24/08/2021 11:51

My fundal height has me at the 99th centile. I've had 4 growth scans (for other reasons) and baby is consistently plotting just below 50th. So I really wouldn't worry about fundal height, it's not accurate at all
