Pregnancy weight gain

I was 10 stone 5 when I found out I was pregnant with my boy back in March. I am now nearly 13 stone and I'm only 25 weeks still aswell, is this unhealthy for us? I'm basically giving in to every craving I have, I have zero willpower anymore. I know I'm obviously carrying a baby and it's completely normal, I've always been told he's healthy and as he should be at my antenatal appointments I'm just wondering at what point is gaining weight unhealthy and is it quite easy to lose once you've given birth?

I gained around 3.5 stone with my first. I breastfed and 3 stone literally fell off. The last half a stone was harder to shift but mainly due to lack of focus on my part,

Hardploc · 22/08/2021 20:16

I had exactly the same experience as @kitten789

SmidgenofaPigeon · 22/08/2021 20:16

Honestly? That’s quite a lot for the stage you’re at- I think the total gain should be around what you are now by the end. The baby doesn’t weigh anything really at this point but there’s obviously placenta and extra fluid.

I mean I wouldn’t give yourself a really hard time about it or anything but obviously weight you put on that’s not the baby etc is going to be harder to work off.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 22/08/2021 20:18

Losing weight breastfeeding is great (and I’m hoping for that too!) but I don’t think it’s a guarantee that everyone does- it obviously makes you really hungry- and there’s always a chance breastfeeding might not work out as you’d hoped.

WiggIyWoo · 22/08/2021 20:18

I'm usually an 8-10 and always gain loads in the first trimester. I'm so hungry all the time. Weight falls off when breastfeeding, so I don't care. Put on around 3 stone (I'm 5'6).

Vbree · 22/08/2021 20:18

That's quite a lot at that stage of pregnancy. I gained 3 stone by 34 weeks when I had my son due to preeclampsia and that included a tonne of fluid retention. I wouldn't be too hard on yourself but it's a good idea to be more mindful of what you eat as it could be hard to shift when baby arrives.

WiggIyWoo · 22/08/2021 20:19

3 stone by the end of the pregnancy that is! But probably at least as stone if not more very early on.

Bluntness100 · 22/08/2021 20:21

A lot of women don’t loose weight breastfeeding Op, the opposite their bodies hold it. Please don’t assume breastfeeding will make the weight drop off.

I also gained a lot, the reality is it comes off like weight loss at any other time.

nadasexdrive · 22/08/2021 20:26

I gained 4 stone in my recent pregnancy...all but the last half stone has fallen off. I was the same as you and gave into every wee craving. Just relax and do what you feel..when else in your life will you be able to eat like this stress free?

Magenta82 · 22/08/2021 20:41

I'm 32 weeks and have gained 8kg which is nearly 18lbs, the pregnancy weight gain calculator I found on Google tells me that this is on the high side of ok at this stage. But I had a BMI of 27 when I got pregnant so apparently I'm supposed to gain less than a woman who was a normal weight to start.

ElizaDoolots · 22/08/2021 20:54

I don’t imagine it’s harmful to baby, more an issue for you feeling less healthy and then having lots to lose afterwards. Pregnancy is hard though and my mindset both times has just been to indulge myself and worry about it afterwards. With my first I gained 4 stone and had lost it all without too much effort after 6 months (just breastfeeding and daily walks with the pram). I’m currently 33 weeks and on track to gain the same this time.

Hunkydory99 · 22/08/2021 21:04

Honestly every woman and every pregnant is different. My first pregnancy I lost 1.5 stone due to sickness but then put it all on and way more (about 4 stone) by the time baby was born. This time I wasn’t so sick but had put on 2.5 stone by 26 weeks. I’m now 31 and my weight gain has slowed right down I’m still just over 2.5 stone heavier than pre pregnancy, not sure if it’s because I’m more aware and being a bit more wise in my food decisions or if it’s just what my body is doing this time

sheusesmagazines · 22/08/2021 21:11

I gained 4.5 stone with my first pregnancy and to be honest I really really regretted it. It took nearly a year to lose it all with quite a lot of effort. Breastfeeding made me ravenous and by a month after birth I had only lost half a stone. Confused

Scarletpig1 · 22/08/2021 21:21

With my first I put on 4 stone and regretted it as was difficult to shift after. 2 stone came off within 2 weeks off the birth. (had a lot of fluid retention I think) but still holding onto the other two stone two years later. I breastfed for two years but it didn't help - just made me hungry.

Pitapotamus · 22/08/2021 21:24

I’d be a bit careful if I were you and try to resist the cravings if you can. I have had four pregnancies and put on a ridiculous amount in each one - about 15kg. I’ve never put on weight outside of pregnancy so I’m not sure why I put on so much each time. I’ve always found it has taken ages to lose and I don’t think breastfeeding made an ounce of difference for me. I remember during my first pregnancy thinking that it would all fall off through breastfeeding and it was quite a shock when it didn’t! Best not to rely on breastfeeding!

I'm 33+6 and for the past 2 months I've been experiencing blurred vision and recently when my hands and feet began to swell slightly I've been getting pins and needles. Is this normal for the third trimester? I've been to the hospital 6 times in the past 2 months and been left waiting 12-15+ hours to see a doctor even though my blood pressure and blood results came back normal. I don't want to have to keep going up there to be told I'm fine but to see a doctor if they're just going to tell me it's normal

I’m sure your midwife will talk to you about your weight gain as that does seem to be a lot for so early on in your pregnancy
With both of mine in the end I put on 3 stone with first it was off in six months with the second it probably took a year I very much enjoyed being pregnant from that perspective

Scirocco · 22/10/2021 17:02

@cccdaviesx If you're having blurred vision, swelling and pins and needles you need to be assessed - those can be signs of gestational diabetes, high blood pressure or pre-eclampsia. I'd phone the midwife or maternity assessment unit for advice.
