Propess without drip?

40+3 today & have induction booked for 41 weeks. I may or may not postpone my induction…

My question is can you have the propess pessary and not have the hormone drip?

I may want to give the pessary a go to see if it does anything but don’t want to use it if it means I will have to use the hormone drip. So, is there any medical need to use the drip if the pessary fails? I would be happy to carry on waiting to see if my body goes into natural labour if the pessary doesn’t work but wouldn’t mind trying it to see if it speeds anything up?

I was induced with the pessary and my waters broke naturally after this (approx 9 hours after). I was put on the drip around 5 hours after my waters broke because my contractions weren't progressing enough. I think the drip was needed in my case due to having meconium liquor so they needed baby out, my understanding was that if it wasn't for that I probably would have been allowed to carry on labour without having the drip as contractions were happening just not as quickly as they wanted.

Pesseries and gel failed with me so it was the hormone drip…I think if the pessary or gel fail then I think you have no choice but to have the drip, otherwise how else is baby coming out :) good luck

I get that if you need to have an induction you need to have a hormone drip if the pessary fails but if I want to try and get the ball rolling then I’m wondering if I could try the pessary and if it doesn’t work I’ll continue waiting and hope she comes before 42 weeks if not then I guess I would need a pessary again and the hormone drip if the pessary fails again.

Yes! For my 3rd DC I had the pessary and then nothing else - I requested not to have it and they were fine with that.

Sheisfee · 22/08/2021 14:19

@PotteringAlong ah, amazing! Did it work for you or did you have to wait to deliver naturally??

Both

Notavegan · 22/08/2021 14:23

They tried it with me on its own. It didn't work, nor did the drip though.

iloveicelollies · 22/08/2021 14:24

Both of my inductions progressed with just pessary. No gel or drip. First was about 24 hours after pessary (this was 10 years ago at 42 weeks) and second one labour started about 12 hours after pessary. No one mentioned drips or gels to me. No complications though like broken waters or unhappy baby. Second induction was 41 weeks and 7 years ago.

My 2nd was induced and worked with the pessary. Pessary at midday, first contractions around 9pm.

DivaRainbow · 22/08/2021 14:33

Definitely worth asking your midwives or consultant. I got to skip the pessary on my 3rd Labour... My waters broke on there own with all 3 pregnancies but nothing happened each time.. With the first two I got a pessary which did nothing so needed the drip on the third I explained pessary had failed in two previous Labours and we skipped it and straight on the drip.. I do advise if you need the drip consider an epidural as its not natural contractions. Good luck

Fab, thank you folks! I’ll have a chat with maternity this week then as I’d prefer to deliver completely naturally but would really like to avoid drip x

@DivaRainbow yeah, I have experience with induction - it was 9 years ago though so I’d rather avoid.

I had the pessary, nothing happened for 24 hours and then waters broke about 20 mins after they inserted the second one.

I needed the drip when I got to 10cm as I wasn’t getting any contractions to push & this got them going.

mummabubs · 22/08/2021 14:41

I had inductions for both of my DC- DS at 42+2 (he really didn't want to come out!) and the pessary was all I needed, waters went naturally etc. Second time around I was induced with DD on my due date and although my waters went after the pessary my labour then didn't progress so I was told I needed the drip. I have to say that on paper this would have been my worst nightmare (I'd felt quite anti-intervention and against anything other than gas and air). I decided to request an epidural and I can honestly say it resulted in a really positive birth experience. All I'd ever heard about the drip before was horror stories but that really wasn't my experience of it at all. Ironically it actually felt much more manageable and relaxing than my first birth with just gas and air and "natural progression"! Just thought I'd share that the drip might not be what you think it would x

Jubilate · 22/08/2021 14:41

I had the propess and then had ARM. My labour started to stall so they wanted to put me on the drip, but I refused and had a csection. You can consent to each stage individually.

PotteringAlong · 22/08/2021 19:24

@Sheisfee no, it worked for me - pessary about midday, DS3 born at 1.15am with no further intervention.

Sorbfsiabs · 22/08/2021 19:45

Given you've said you'd prefer to deliver completely naturally, please bear in mind there are no requirements to have any sort of induction of you don't want them. I have 42+ week babies, you can request daily monitoring of the chord/baby and as long as you're happy to wait, noone can make you do anything that you don't want to. Good luck x

bumbledeedum · 22/08/2021 20:53

You don't have to consent to anything and you can stop medical intervention at any more so yes, you can refuse the drip if the pessary doesn't work. I would discuss it with your midwife/consultant first though so they know where you stand and can discuss any risks etc with you before starting anything.

Nat4392 · 22/08/2021 22:10

I went into labour quite quickly after just the pessary and my waters broke 11 hours later. I then needed an emergency section so can’t comment on the progression!

Nc4post99 · 22/08/2021 23:08

Yup me I did! At 37 weeks. Pessary inserted 4pm daughter born 4am. No further medical intervention. Propess seems to be one of more effective induction methods (compared to the gel). I also only had a bishops score of 3 so there was no way a natural labour was just around the corner.

Only thing I’d say is that it made my contractions come on hard, so there were 1 min long and 1 min apart and I was still only about 1.5 can, which sucked. Had pethedine and then got to 10cm in an hour due to being relaxed! Xx

EstRan · 11/10/2021 09:16

Hi my daughter has been induced using propess. She’s on her second pessary and is very fed up. She’s getting small regular contractions but no opening of cervix yet. She’s up and about walking and bouncing on ball. Any other advice?

Sleeplessem · 11/10/2021 13:14

@EstRan I was exaclry the same until I had the pethedine, not saying she needs to have that but it was a case of taking my mind off the pain!

Is the option of water available to her? Any hypnobirthing? Aromatherapy? Anything to take her mind off it xx
